TheBK door and panels are painted and cleared with the same clear used on the final pass of the cabinet.
Also cleared the wood rail trim with it.
I anticipate scuffing and clearing the woodrail trim once more because of the nature of stained raw wood and the way it will wick clear in the first time around but it is off to a good start.

Made up a new line filter and cord assembly for the BK.
Also made a safety cover for it.
Also got the tin transferred over and all the parts for the lock etc fitted and functional in the head.

Maybe.
I restore whatever is sent in.
The classic Sterns are rarely requested but I am always open to them if they can be done to a high level.

BK gets a new rectifier set up and all new boards. These are the Kohout versions and look very promising.
New fuse holder and some clean up too.

Bk lamp panel is rebuilt and placed.
Old cabinet can officially be retired.
Side by side helps me get a better sense of the changes made.
It still looks very original but the new color choices work a bit better with the theme and stainless trim.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

That looks nice I had thought about something like that or a fade etc but the need to manually cut it all out makes it hard to shadow complex shapes clean.
Basic ones are easy enough.
In order to do it best I would have to get an extra stencil in for the lettering made about 1/4 of an inch smaller.
I also thought about Shading the shield and lots of other stuff but when you do some of these changes you have stick with things that you can easily duplicate and redo in case there are breakthroughs in the sanding process.
Where it is at now is very similar to the original but just a bit more realistically colored and a bit less basic.

Chris, I’m guessing you don’t care to mess with this, but in case you do.....

I recently bought a Silhouette Cameo 4 vinyl cutter. The software that comes with it for free is actually VERY good. You could take a clean picture of something like that Black Knight lettering on your coin door (or from anywhere really) and use the software to “trace” it (it does this well without much intervention on clean line art) and then scale it to whatever size you want. You can then do internal or external resizing to make cutting extra stencils quite easily.

And learning how to do these various tasks in the software couldn’t be easier...there’s always a few YouTube videos of each thing and they’ve been very easy to find and usually very well done (and short and fast!). I’ve been constantly pleasantly surprised with their stuff, and while yes, I am a computer guy, I am NOT a “computer graphics” guy. And yet making this stuff work just hasn’t been bad at all.

Obviously a cutter this size won’t do a full size cabinet stencil without you having to piece it together, which would suck. Bigger ones are definitely more expensive AND take up a lot more space. But for a good bit of what you do, this might be worthwhile and definitely is a pretty small thing when put away.

As usual, that new look is clearly “something that could have been factory, but is simply just a ton better.” Exactly the kind of “mod” I love. Nice work.

Thanks Donnie.
I am probably going to buy one after looking into it.
Would be good for doing aprons, coin doors, accents and improvements to a variety of detail type of things.

The BK cabinet is pretty much in order the coin door frame and skin are fitted before I do the official drilling and install on that.
Easier to deal with it while the door is not built since part of the frame is directly attached to the door. 566846AE-803D-4F46-AFAB-3FCC4B57BF17 (resized).jpeg566846AE-803D-4F46-AFAB-3FCC4B57BF17 (resized).jpeg

In addition to that I am starting to wrap up my last Fathom.
It drug out a bit due to some last minute parts needs and a forgotten sound board servicing.
I had done so many I lost track of what I had on hand but Clive gave me a fast turn around under these crazy circumstances. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

Ran into a strange issue in the Fathom build.
The saucers use a AT-27-1300
I normally replace the AO-27-1300 with a AE 27-1200 which is just about the same thing once you install the diode maybe just a hair stronger technically since it has 100 less windings but nothing of any concern.
Fathom uses the AT though for the saucers so that means three lug double diode.
The originals were broken and or incorrect. F503EF7C-F3F6-41B9-BB23-EE4D453F2B38 (resized).jpegF503EF7C-F3F6-41B9-BB23-EE4D453F2B38 (resized).jpeg3B78CD11-1C32-48D9-9EA9-CD3432224428 (resized).jpeg3B78CD11-1C32-48D9-9EA9-CD3432224428 (resized).jpeg

I was able to make my own with parts I had in stock.
Taking a new 27-1200 and a straight solder terminal. DCFC6D8D-C50D-48D8-BD9B-3D4E324D4FCD (resized).jpegDCFC6D8D-C50D-48D8-BD9B-3D4E324D4FCD (resized).jpeg

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

BSD playfield is wired
[quoted image]
I switched over to the taller playfield resting brackets
I can’t see any reason they should not work but if I run into anything I will let that be known.
[quoted image]
I like the higher resting points with this style compared to the original. [quoted image]
Should be particularly advantageous on this side since the pictured coil bracket is taller than the original resting bracket.[quoted image]

Are these made for another game and where can these be purchased? No clearance issues I assume? I never have cared for the smaller units that come with BSD.

These are for TZ originally. You can get them from Kerry at Mantis Amusements
No clearance issues as long as you place them in the manner shown in the finished pictures because the right one can be too close to the power box if you don’t slightly angle it.

Thanks! Funny that's where they came from... The ones he sells for BSD are actually shorter than the oem ones!

In your line of work what with spray painting and lots of sanding, etc.
did you already have a plentiful supply of masks,
or do you use something completely different
when spraying or sanding.
Or did you have any trouble getting resupply of masks or cartridges for masks.

I have recently found this topic and have been reading it from the beginning. Absolutely amazing work! I have read up to post #1166. Wondering who you purchase your bulk color coded wire from. Haven't finished going through the whole thread yet so if you have mentioned it elsewhere I apologize for asking.
Thanks!

I have a good enough supply of full respirators for the time being but dust mask are hard to near impossible to come by right now.
It is unfortunate because while I completely understand they are needed on the front lines for the healthcare providers I too have a need to protect myself and my lungs in my profession and it has gotten to a point where we are simply not allowed to buy proper nor adequate PPE despite the long and verifiable history of ordering it in the past .It is not available right now if you are not in healthcare.

I buy in bulk at Consolidated Wire.
They have a pretty large minimum order though so it isn’t something I talk about much here because it probably isn’t that practical for most.
I think when it comes to striping etc the minimum is 1000ft but I could be off or it could have changed.

I have bought electronics from Bombay electronics previously (with speedy delivery)
and always had good luck, generally have bought power transformers/converters or Non Region DVD players.
But got this notice in my email, about them having a supply for dust masks now, I think Bombay is out of Chicago,
but they obviously have connections overseas.
Not sure what normal pricing would/should be, but does not seem ultra terribly overpriced,
Also not true N95 masks but similar, but
if you just got to have something in the interim, these are better than nothing .
Certainly good enough to go to the supermarket.

PPS sells 18 and 22 AWG wire by the 10' lengths for $2.25. You can find most of the colors you need. I used to purchase wire from Bay Area Amusements but they merged or were purchased by PPS a few months back.

Search "AWG" in PPS web page to pull up their wire.

Everything is great except weeding. Weeding sucks. I’m getting just old enough that my eyesight is slipping some and I like 1.25 readers when working with fine print. I found I *could* weed with those, but with some material still couldn’t see well. Got some 1.5 readers and BAM, now I can see. You need bright light, too. The cuts are just so dang tiny.

Anyway, it’s pretty good stuff. Be patient with the software and watch howto videos to get going and it’ll fall into place pretty quickly after some initial frustration.

And another tip...should you be inclined to try Heat Transfer Vinyl on shirts, know this: It seems very good and it is nearly as good as screen printing. But if and only if you get a heat press versus trying to iron it with a normal iron. That’s mostly what I got mine for and I’ve been very pleased with the custom shirts I’ve done. I never actually tried ironing as I heard it’s just not as good and presses aren’t that expensive.

This will better light the added plastic. 88C14041-7478-4415-B428-C4686B74A49B (resized).jpeg88C14041-7478-4415-B428-C4686B74A49B (resized).jpeg

Of note is that I did a trial drilling on the old playfield to make sure there would be no interference. Which there will not be since I have full control of lamp and wire placement image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Most post are placed as well

The Lane guide plastic assemblies are installed so I can can best align the flipper mechs during the rest of the build and ball travel is checked.
These are spaced and placed to align perfectly with the wire guides in both height and side to side for a smooth and hop free transition.

Hey Chris,

I'm gathering up my courage and supplies to paint a cabinet.

I know you have posted about buying paint supplies. I cannot find it in the 132 pages of posts. What base are the paints you use for Primer and colors? Are they Acrylic, Oil, or? base?

I would think using water base for the primer on the bare wood would be a bad thing.

Thanks

Brilliant! Now I want my lane guides to light up too! Are those white or is that the protective coating to keep the steel shiny?

I think Chris is using auto products exclusively. The cabinet primer is a high-build primer that can be sanded.

Final clear is done on the wood rail parts.all are new with the exception of the front/lockbar.
Looks like fine furniture.
That is the original refinished. The replacement I have for it has a small notch for a shooter since this is a turret shooter game it doesn’t have that notch originally.

If you would share what color stain you used for the wood rail?

I used this because I wanted to make sure I used something that so could safely auto clear over.

Chris,

Noticed you use different color primers throughout your jobs. Do you use a primer that is close to the base you are going to spray?

#6600 3 years ago

Chris, when time allows and you have a roll or two handy, please post some pictures of the wire and part numbers associated with posts #6574 & #6577. I'd like your help to point me in the right direction when ordering some wire from Consolidated please. Happy to receive the information via PM if you'd prefer.
