Maverick is having a hard time figuring this baby thing out.
He really wants that pacifier for himself

Very pinballish beer tonight.

Copperworks and three magnets.

Every one normally hates hearing a baby cry.
But I find it kind of soothing (at least babies 9 months or younger),
because it just the way babies communicate.
When kids get older, it does get annoying
and tends towards just being tantrums.

Wow, those black standoffs make a world of difference. White ones looked so chintzy, stuck out like a sore thumb.

Yes, Monster Bash (including the remake) has a bunch of the same standoffs and they do really stand out. I'm kind of surprised that they only seem to be made in white.

CP is done.
I couldn’t find any score cards for it right now but it will leave with them.

The all black on that looks great. I wish I played CP more. Looks insanely fun.

Chris, I thought that Champ Pub was a decent looking machine when we had it in our collection (with the exception of the light rust on some of the metal stuff & insert issues) but it looks like a totally different machine than what I dropped off with you. I am sure the new owner will be proud to add that to his collection. Great job as always!

#6462 4 years ago

New owner is proud! It looks fantastic! Thanks Chris.

CP goes back to the warehouse.
It took a good bit to dial that one in.
The boxer was the main culprit despite having fully rebuilt and rewired it. The design is just troublesome but I managed to get it working as it should.

After the Black knight start button issue I am going to double check everything against the original before I proceed.

Did that and all is well.
I did need to make the swing panel holes but not a big deal. If any questions I would rather make them myself fresh than have to correct them.

My eyes just lit up seeing this arrival!!!

Looking forward to watching High Speed go through the HEP wringer! I am deep in the middle of my #HS restore. Playfield is 99% complete just got a bunch of parts back from the plating company today and built up the coin door. Ordered a cabinet since mine looked about the same as yours. Delaminated plywood layers, water rot, etc. Lots of rust on my project. Very time consuming.

I did notice the hinge space (for the head/cabinet attaching point) on the new cabinet is different from the original. There are 2 hinge cutouts on the new cabinet and the original, as does mine, has one notched section for the hinge. Is this intentional?

This is your first High Speed correct? How is the playfield? From the limited picture it does not look terrible. Are you going to swap it with a CPR playfield or restore it yourself?

I will be interested to hear from you about how intensive you think the playfield underside is. It is my first restore and to me it seemed very busy compared to other pins I have seen.

Sorry for all the questions. Just super interested in this one.

This is my second but the last one was about 14 years ago.
I will look at the neck on mine closer.
These cabinets are built off the Williams files but sometimes there can be a supplement for a specific game like the head for HS with the dome.
If there is and it gets missed or if there should be and it is missing(happens often with such old factory documentation) then I report back to the builder and we make adjustments.
Occasionally I run into two different versions of the same cabinet.
Getaway is an example where it comes in two forms. One with a pivot only playfield, the other with the slide lock so things like small variations can sometimes be correct even if they are wrong for the build.
Anyone that thinks new cabinet means less work/easier hasn’t done enough of them yet.
The main advantage is new wood that is really the highlight.

You can't fix wood that has rotted or delaminated without a lot of time and effort. And would probably at some point down the line just start delaminating more.

Yeah. I look at that type of work as a waste of time if there are better alternatives.
Sometimes there aren’t but if there are or budgets allow then it is best to start fresh.

@high_end_pins I see more often than not you use side art blades. Is that your suggestion or the clients? They definitely help add to the theme but obviously move away from the "originality". What's your preference?

Looks like you did some High Speed work. Will you be adding the fuse protection for the Lamp and solenoid rectifiers?

The chrome fathom build is starting to come together.
As stated many times before a new cabinet saves a little prep (maybe!) but you will spend much more time locating every bracket, hinge board, tilt and loom.

Now I am going to build up doors for both the Skateball and the chrome fathom.
I won’t be doing a chrome door for that fathom because I find they usually don’t fit or operate quite right after plating and often show warpage and strange marks from the process.
I can live with that on rails or bars but the size and flatness of these doors makes it too obvious for me.

Since these are stainless, have you ever had them sent out to a shop to have them highly polished? I'm guessing you wouldn't do it yourself, as it is a very time-intensive job, but the results are incredible. I've seen stainless parts on custom autos polished to the point that it is indistinguishable from chrome.

Yes I have done it and had them done. The problem with these Bally skins in particular is that the heat from the polishing process can warp them pretty easily.
Most shops are just looking to make it shiny and not paying enough attention to the surface shape.
You see a lot of impressive polishing but it usually comes at a cost of straightness.
The thicker parts and other things are no problem it is just the flimsy stuff that I have had bad experiences with.
Using the rails as an example of what I don’t like about it you can spot the numerous waves and ripples the process has created by the way the reflections bend.
This looks particularly horrible on a door.

Next up for the Skateball is the lamp panel. 758F787C-B550-4E99-9F10-A98E37321297 (resized).jpeg758F787C-B550-4E99-9F10-A98E37321297 (resized).jpeg

They also did a great job of rebuilding the connectors. Given the condition of the game I am sure this was much needed. B5E9A07A-9B56-4322-A913-DD134D5945DC (resized).jpegB5E9A07A-9B56-4322-A913-DD134D5945DC (resized).jpeg

It needs investigation
Turns out the Stern display used is much wider than the original Bally version.
As a result brackets were bent and I now understand why the transformer cage was left uninstalled.

The lamp panel was torn down to a certain level then refinished.this freshened the face up and turned the lamp shields into a traditional white 39384842-D310-4290-A517-0FAE383AF2F6 (resized).jpeg39384842-D310-4290-A517-0FAE383AF2F6 (resized).jpeg
The panel was then rebuilt using the Pinitech Uno displays with the diffuser installed. BF18A173-F12F-4835-8E24-E4945A4EEE05 (resized).jpegBF18A173-F12F-4835-8E24-E4945A4EEE05 (resized).jpeg

That Skateball is coming up a treat! I'm fixing up a back panel at the moment, I noticed you sprayed over the diffusers for originality. Mine are black so I'll remove before spraying. It got me thinking about stapling back panels and playfield etc. Can I ask what you use? It's often very tight and my handheld stapler often makes it hard to get in the right spot.

Always amazed at the artistry on this thread. Absolutely amazing work and skill. If only everyone had this much attention to detail in their daily workplace

Finished the special BK cabinet today.
The sides and head were great on the first pass but the color scheme and button issue on the front fought me.
I tried a few different schemes and settled on this one. I am completely happy with it.
Clear is 70% gloss but wet in the picture

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

When good things go bad.
I was combing through my BK pictures before I start the final session on the cabinet and I noticed how far off my stenciling was around the start button.
[quoted image]
Knowing that my stencils were lined up properly I investigated further.
Original is at 2 &1/4 from the left
[quoted image]
Mine was drilled at around 2 &1/2
[quoted image]
Alright that kind of sucks but shit happens. I could whine about it .I could leave it alone or I could fix it.
I cut a dowel [quoted image]
Make a plug

Glue it [quoted image]
Sand it

Drill it in the right spot

I wasn’t crazy about the front scheme anyway. Completely happy with the sides and head but was planning to rework the front during the final session so not a huge set back but just goes to show how little things that aren’t even on your radar can pop up.

I was thinking about this post today and looking at the Black Knight in my basement. The more I looked, the more I thought that your stencils could have been right, and the repro cabinet could have been right based on what they used for the pattern.

If you look at my Black Knight, it too has an offset to the sword start button, which will now forever bother me. Thanks a lot Chris! LOL

I think there are two different versions of BK cabinets.
This one has the transformer in the head and a good center on the button And the shooter
Not sure if those have buttons at the 2&1/4 mark specifically though.
I wasn’t able to get both perfectly centered with the version of stencils I had but no doubt after seeing yours and the flyer it was in the right ball park the first time
