I used to work for Binks in the repair department. I rebuilt hundreds and hundreds of their spray guns. Thor guns (precursor to the model 7) model 7's, 18's, 2001's, BBR's, automatic guns were the most common but nothing high end like yours. My salary was probably covered by selling fluid nozzles because nobody had the correct thin-line 19/32 wrench to properly remove them and they used pliars instead. 20 bucks each time instead of a $5 wrench...

#6352 4 months ago

I used the spray cars and Binks is the only show in town. I own a home now and trying to figure out how to get a rig again without my neighbors going full liberal on me. Looks like HEP has a proper spray room

I am happy with that so it can head into rebuild.

Started working on the Select a Card playfield.

This is about all that can be done upfront.
Chemicals, sanding or pretty much anything else just creates more damage. 78BA0DA1-8772-4C51-B480-546DE4D542DE (resized).jpeg
I will set and glue the inserts now.
I will do these with it clamped on the side Because they are very easy to move around. In this position they won’t sink as the epoxy sets up. 30890DFA-6979-4813-A61F-09D2FEB48A27 (resized).jpeg

So what's the plan to get the wood coloring even in the playing area?

Basically, this is what CPR's one-off digital PF printing service was made for. Sand to a blank and re-print. Unfortunately, no one has done the art for this, nor probably ever will.

I usually approach these one step at a time.
Most likely solution will be airbrushing the wood tones in a overthinned similiar color to blend and camouflage.
Can’t do anything until there is a level and stable surface so that comes first.
This patient is 70 years old so if I can make him look like he is 30 and work like he is 20 that will be about as good of a miracle as I am capable of.

After a few coats I got about as close as you can in step 1
I will see how it handles the clear and absorbs it.
Concerns unknown at this point will be if this clear lifts the old finish.
If not we are in a good spot.

Skateball cabinet makes it into rebuild area.
Since it is the first one I have done I park it next to the original to verify accuracy.
Anytime I do a game for the first time I try to do the original scheme justice. Once I get into multiples I try to get more creative if allowed.

I had hoped to replace the left arm because it has a chipped knuckle but after wasting my money on two different replacement arms I conceded to just reusing the original.
The colors were not even close. The material used was far too rigid and even worse they don’t fit at all.

Quoted from NC_Pin:

Chris, I am curious...mechanically how complex is CP? It seems like there is a lot going on with the game. What would you consider the top 5 (or so) complex games?

CP isn’t too bad overall but it does have a lot of mechs to go through and many of them are unique.
It is one of the more complex WPC-95 games.
On that list I would include NGG With the gopher mechs, mini playfield, disc and possibly CV. Because of the ringmaster, unique backglass.
None of them are too bad overall but if you really are going to break them down and truly rebuild and improve everything then there are a lot of extra steps and many more hours spent.
In terms of complex games in general I think the three level System 80 games, double playfield games,Banzai Run,Safecracker and probably several others come to mind but really the are all mostly coils and plungers with a motor here and there.
What makes some more complex is how they are constructed or just that they have lots of those coils, plungers brackets and motors to deal with at one time.

Select a Card playfield is prepped
Then masked and wood tone frosted. This is a very tough process on something so dingy and aged.
It is going to be impossible to make it look as though no work was done but I have preserved the natural grain as well as I can while still eliminating all the ground in dirt.
From a distance it may look like it is simply tan but in person and from a players view you can see the grain.

Quoted from meSz:

How was this beer Chris? Ironically I just picked one up yesterday.

It was good. Not great but a tasty beer overall.
I think the biggest issue with a beer like that is it is a little too weak for the style.
If they dialed it up a little would be better.
In that ABV range I would probably rather have a good Belgian triple and save the porters and stouts for the higher ranges.

CP cabinet is building.
I deferred to gloss black since gold is a bit overdone and few other options really seamed to make sense like chrome and really even traditional stainless with this color scheme.

One of the best things about trying to do everything in house or worse case locally is that I don’t have as much risk or down time.
The parts I dropped off for powder are already back in my hands.
I was able to inspect them and even more importantly count them to insure they are all there. 5DE39D40-4D41-4EB3-866F-BE2C80B94E9F (resized).jpeg

I am also about to really communicate my needs to the coater.
In this instance I was able to show him exactly where he needed to tie things off and how important it was not to get them any thicker than they already are. 0F8BA994-2304-4E8C-B354-4D0E890F14DF (resized).jpeg
Something like this pound in barbed wireguides are a disaster when they get replated with a layer of nickel, copper then chrome or brass.
Looks nice yes but does much more harm than good at reassembly.

I know that's a factory look, but it's always struck me as odd. Were the specks initially added to hide manufacturing flaws or location wear? Have any of your customers ever requested no specks?

I think the specks are to add durability. Most textured finishes are on that order.
Not often are people too specific about the coin door finishes unless it is something other than black.
In this case putting the specks back on helps because it makes it easier to reuse the original door.

#6383 4 months ago

I would love to see how you set up your gun to achieve the speck finish. I have watched other restore threads on how to do this and it seems pretty difficult. I know Bryan Kelly did a great video on his technique but I find it pretty intimidating to get the right amount without full-on blasting the paint.

I may have missed it, but I've wondered about coloring wire guides before. Do you buy them already colored or do you do it yourself? I assume if one wanted to do their own they would need to be powder coated to hold up over time? Also, when powder coating something that is already chromed should you first remove the chrome?

#6388 4 months ago

How do you get the guides back in w/o messing up the finish on them - hand forced?

Un masked
Have some glue to clean up then so will clear it in full gloss again.

Bk cleared
Not sure where it goes from here but so far so good.
This is full gloss because I anticipate at a minimum sanding and reclearing maybe more.
I will probably tweak a few things though maybe add one more color in there not sure yet snd please no suggestions I like to figure it out on my own sometimes. Not always though

Working late tonight?

Going to have to send you some Irish Death stout for a little caffine boost.

Thanks.
Yeah I started that paint job about 1 thinking I would be done around 5 but I ended getting nutty and of course taking a lot more time than I thought.
Pretty common around here
I did manage to have a late dinner and fit in one beer.
