Oooh F-14 TomCat. !!
Hwooo,
finally caught up after being away for several weeks.
I am also looking forward to see the woodrail competed.
Quoted from Tsskinne:Is that one of the new IJ playfields from Mirco?
I like how he highlighted Indy!
HG 3 is done.
Rainy day again here so we have to settle for inside pictures.
Had some red white and blue coin door decals made.
HG 3 playfield.
Great work as always, Chris. I looked through the keyposts and though I know you've mentioned it somewhere I can't find where you shared your preferred clearcoat product. Could you please remind me (and the masses) what your preferred 2pac for playfields is?
Chris your cab work is excellent.... the paint lines and how well your masked bottoms come out are great.
I also noticed there doesnt seem to be branding but stickers of playfields lately....why? i liked the branding idea

He mentioned before branding+painted surfaces did not work well. So he uses stickers when the target is painted and branding on naked wood.

are we going to see a restoration of indiana jones and the haunted house? (was that a gottlieb-williams direct to video movie?

I use Lesonal clear as of the new year.
Reason being my supplier switched lines. It cost more than the Cromax(DuPont)line they did carry but I actually like it better because it has a better gloss retention and seems less prone to shrinkage and die back than the Cromax clears that were available there. In other words it takes less effort and workaround to get to the desired final results.
I am or have been certified in Sikkens,ICI,DuPont,PPG,Sherman Williams
Glassurit RM and Standox throughout the years and have used them all at some point or another.
They are all about the same in basic chemical composition. Some have much better color matching abilities than others, some lines have strength in the primers and sealers.
When it comes to auto clears there is a common chemistry that makes them just like water or oxygen. They will have some nuances but there isn’t any secret sauce or anything just some minor formulation approaches.
When it comes to pinball applications the differences, strengths or weaknesses are hard to spot or appreciate.
HG 3 played great!
The spinners ripped around like the were being turned on a lathe all the lights work and only one or two switches benefited from any adjustments.
This is why I typically stick with a certain title all the way through until I close the title out of inventory.
It remains fresh in my mind and anything I ran into on the previous build is covered right upfront on the next.
The next point of focus will be gutting the CP
There was a NOS playfield supplies for the game which is great but it isn’t drilled or dimpled so I have to get the old playfield stripped and in hand in order to drill and dimple the new one. image (resized).jpg
The owner wants something besides the typical brass and I am glad to do that.
I was hoping to maybe go black nickel but that seems like an impossible finish to get your hands on these days and I need to keep my projects moving once they come up
Sending off wireforms etc and waiting months for there return is fun and understandable as a hobby but doesn’t work well under these circumstances so I will figure out either a in house or worse case local solution.
The other thing is CP has so much brass that hammers in the playfield that having the replated then having it fit in there properly is probably a disaster waiting to happen. Especially where it runs so close to inserts.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Large playfield shipment arrives. [quoted image]
Very eager to see you work on Haunted House. It's a game in my collection that I really consider sending you from time to time. I'm curious, you get a lot of cabinets delivered. When and how do you decide to get a new game cabinet CNC'd? I noticed HH is still the original cabinet in the lineup, so I'd love to know what you look for and when you think you're going to ditch the old one.
Thanks for keeping this thread going so nicely, neatly, and consistently!

CP is a playfield that really isn’t meant to be taken all the way apart without replacing.
The reason is there are probably more driven in barbed large diameter wire guides on it than many other games.

When removed at best they create small chips and cracks. BBA31774-3302-4D31-8101-9C39023B1405 (resized).jpeg
At worst they just destroy the area entirely especially if close to larger holes. 05461512-EE4F-4E51-83F3-FBF9FA105BA3 (resized).jpeg
This playfield was plagued with ghosting and insert issues anyway so it will make a great drilling template.

Chris,
Where do you order your cabinets from? I ask because I might be in need of a High Speed cabinet. I started sanding my cabinet and there is a lot of water rot. I would rather start with a new cabinet than end up with a crappy job trying to salvage this one. It may not be cost effective to replace but I am willing to at least explore cabinet replacement for my
High Speed refurbish.

I use a variety of builders depending on what I need.
I don’t reveal all my sources or collaborations publicly because it can cause delays for me if they get flooded with orders or drama if they don’t meet expectations but you can always ask me privately. If I can help without causing myself delays or problems I definitely will.
I am not a jerk just practical.

Ahh ok i must of missed that but makes total sense.
Quoted from High_End_Pins:Bottom is done[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
Was that bottom done with measurements, a paper template you made from the original playfield, or did you stack playfields and drill through from the original to the new one?
Quoted from PinMonk:did you stack playfields and drill through from the original to the new one
I think this is how he does it, based on previous games in the thread.
Busy day.
Had lots of errands to run
Took stuff to the powdercoaters
Had to get some wood working type stuff for the wood rail but I did manage to prep and prime the Black Knight cabinet.
I am pretty sure when I paint it I will alter the colors a bit. I have done a few of these now so that is when I like to get a bit more creative if allowed.

People don't realize when you are "self employed" there is more to conducting business than just the business you are into. I know the "running around for errands" side of things all to well. So far this week that is all I have actually accomplished. A couple hours here and three hours their and next thing you know 10 or 12 hours is gone!
Have you had a chance to use that new gun yet? If so how do you like it?
-Skip-

Definitely! The worst thing is that for some reason that tends to drain me.
I can work day and night, workout etc no problem when I am in my own element but when I have to get out, deal with traffic, people products etc by the time I can finally get back to work I have lost my motivation
The new gun works great it sprays just like the old one did for the first 5 years so I am all set again.
For anyone curious. What happens on these guns if you use them daily or close to is as they wear over the years even if you take great care of it the fan pattern starts to degrade so what was once a nice full wetting fan from top to bottom becomes a bit more hallowed in the center.
It starts to show as drier zones or streakier applications despite no changes in your mechanics or application making it tougher to apply the finish the way you would like.
By the time you buy a new needle and air cap set plus a rebuild kit you start to approach the cost of a new gun and that is the cycle that you go through.

I always explained the "wear" to the pattern as being like water eroding the sides of a stream. Again unless you have worked with good equipment and worn it out people just can't wrap their head around it. Most people don't understand a volume of air over time will wear groves in the metal parts on a spray gun. And from my experience rebuilding them just never makes an old gun "new again" so replacing them every few years always seemed to be the best approach. Just part of the "cost of doing business" was the way I always looked at it.
Regardless of how good, or talented, you are it really all comes down to you are only as good as the equipment you use. Good equipment will not make a bad painter a good painter but bad equipment can make the best painter not such a good painter. Plus the frustration of knowing you could do a much better job if you weren't using "used up equipment". Laying down a great coat of clear is one of the hardest things to do but it becomes much easier when you are not fighting a bad pattern coming out of the nozzle of your gun! And laying down a nice finish saves a heck of a lot of sanding & buffing time also - time saved will pay for that new gun in no time.
Glad to hear it works like the old one did and you didn't have a huge learning curve because of a design change you didn't expect.
HG 3 is packed and ready for pick up tomorrow The Skateball cabinet is prepped and primed.
That involves working all the seams and filling any small nail holes regardless of if they will be seen or not once assembled.
Skateball prepped painted
Now matte cleared.
Should be good with that. Since there are no overlapping colors it is a one shot deal.
Looking great (as usual) Chris! That paint scheme makes me feel like I'm back in High School and it's 1980 all over again.

I noticed you did not mask off the inside of the cabinet or head like i have seen you do in the past. Why no masking on this one? Oh, Yea, We are watching very closely. LOL

On this one or any that get painted stenciled and final cleared in one session need to be clear inside as well as the outside.
The ones that get a second session or more are masked because there is no need to revisit the inside. It gets cleared the first time and doesn’t need more.
The difference in ones that can be done in one session or those that require multiple are hard to describe but it is just about how well the colors cover,if they overlap, how sharp the edges are and more.
Time to rebuild the old clear gun/new base gun.
