The lamp panel was torn down refinished then rebuilt. I really like the Pinitech Uno displays

The head is built up with all new boards less the sound which is serviced.
Then it is placed on the lower and the playfield assembly is test fit before that swap begins.

Does that make you Goose or Ice Man?

This one rarely needs an extra session because no colors stack and the ones on there cover very easily and thin.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Chris,

Do you use same clear paint on the Cabinets as you use on playfields?

I was probably drinking a Goose Island BCBS anyway so I will go with Goose.

Chris,

Yes. The matting agent is added to that in different ratios to achieve the desired gloss level.

HG 3 gets a new power switch A9B00F90-2E64-4DCA-A435-B3C0DBC61E1D (resized).jpegA9B00F90-2E64-4DCA-A435-B3C0DBC61E1D (resized).jpeg
Then I have to deal with the coin door.
This one is sad. FDE12855-52D3-4DF4-8325-E4D208B5DC64 (resized).jpegFDE12855-52D3-4DF4-8325-E4D208B5DC64 (resized).jpeg

Missing a bit of what it takes to accept coins and some of what is still there is butchered.

Using some of my spare parts and creating a new harness it is much better off now
The skin is new. I will install a decal in the diamond later.

Because the bezel was so rough and missing a lot I am going with all three blank free play coin slots although it can accept coins again BDD3972D-DE01-483A-8D02-7CAF0788998A (resized).jpegBDD3972D-DE01-483A-8D02-7CAF0788998A (resized).jpeg

Cabinet is neatly wired and then it is powered up for testing.
The backglass is fit again to check and adjust display alignment.

Do you find replacement lockdown bars or you rebuild them everytime? seems like a lot of work!

Quoted from hisokajp:

It varies if they are good enough to have plated I do that if not I get a new one.

#6260 4 years ago

Down to my last Fathom
I started taking off the parts I will need to have plated.
This one has had a playfield swap but it was poorly done.
I call it the David Copperfield method where they just loosen everything on the old one and slide it over to the new one because it reminds me of the table cloth trick magicians do.
When done this way it usually makes for lots of broken wires and coil tabs.

It is that time again.
About every six years I buy a new clear gun and then rebuild and repurpose/set up my old one to become my base gun.

The old one should clean up and rebuild well. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

The new one has arrived.
It is a 5000 putting it two generations newer than my last one.
FEA4202F-C2B9-45FC-9D86-A3D8C384FBB2 (resized).jpegFEA4202F-C2B9-45FC-9D86-A3D8C384FBB2 (resized).jpegF95CFAC5-2949-42BD-B975-FEC686E65079 (resized).jpegF95CFAC5-2949-42BD-B975-FEC686E65079 (resized).jpeg
These come in close to $1000 so it isn’t a cheap tool to upgrade even in those increments. The 5500 is out now do this one is actually already one generation back but I have seen and heard mixed reviews on the 5500 and the total redesign it went through.
This 5000 will be the pinnacle of the previous design that I know well and trust so I feel more comfortable all the way around with it.
Pretty sure that red rubber cap is going to make an awesome power switch cover for the HG

Back in the days I was doing street rods & muscle cars Devilbiss were always my primer guns and I always used Binks for my painting and clear coat. I remember the joy of getting a new gun and how nice they sprayed compared to guns with a few years on them. Rebuilding them was OK but there is just nothing like a totally new gun especially when laying down clear. Good guns have always been expensive but they were cheap compared to what a good drier cost. Moisture in the air line is your biggest villain so good equipment was a must.

Chris - Enjoy that new toy but remember to practice a little with it before doing anything you care about. I am sure you will but you know how it goes when changing from the old standby to something new. Once you have it dialed in I know you are going to love it!

Definitely. Playfields are good for dialing in a new gun. They are nice and flat and it is easy to get a feel and clearly see the wetting patterns of the gun.
The nice thing about pinball compared to cars is the shapes are all pretty consistent.
When I used to do auto work it would be a big boxy G-wagen one hour and a curvy SL500 the next.
Dialing the new gun in for this purpose won’t be too bad.

The thing I always hated when doing cars was stuff like to door jams & dashboards on the earlier stuff with metal dashboards. You would be laying on your back trying to get around the bottom of the dash they have to get a nice flow all the way up and around the top without bumping anything you just finished. Unibody engine compartments during the late 1960's & early 1970's weren't any fun either and we did them in Imron which made it even worse.

A buddy of mine did the inside of army tanks for several years - I can't imagine how much fun that must have been! At least he didn't have to worry about a perfect finish or a run here & their!

You are right - painting flat is like child's play after doing some of the stuff you experience when doing bikes or cars.

I sanded and polished the HG 3 playfield.
I also painted the underside blue because the gray was spotted and it will help me distinguish it in the future from other builds. I typically put little Easter eggs like that in my work but when it gets to be really saturated I will do something more easily noticed like this. I started dialing in the new gun on some aprons.
One will go on HG 3 the other is a spare.

Quoted from heni1977:

Much better than sandblasting that is for sure! I used a sandblaster for days on end when I was younger - getting street rod frames & parts nice and clean before we modified them and prepped them for paint. I still hate sand and although I loved the beach when I was a kid after all that sandblasting I hate going to the beach also. Two weeks and a dozen showers later you were still getting sand from somewhere?

Metal flake paint was "fun" also. Years later specks of flake would turn up here & their. I was doing this shit during the "disco era" and when I would show up at a club or bar people teased me about putting flake in my hair. They didn't realize it wasn't put their I just couldn't get rid of all of it no matter how hard I tried. "Young & dumb days" wearing no protection when sandblasting or painting other than a cheap respirator.

Making good progress on the HG playfield build. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
Beautiful day outside right now. Supposed to rain later.
image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
I have not run in almost a month so I am going to try to get into that today.
I expect it to be miserable with slow times.

#6275 4 years ago

We did that.
First mile was respectable and it faded from there my wife stopped me on the last mile halfway up the street as she was returning from the store to ask me what I am having for sides !
Anyway it’s a start to the outdoor season.
Followed it up with a spin or two around the block to loosen my joints back up.

I went with Brussels sprouts of course.

I tied the sockets together in smaller banks using single leads anywhere that worked well it will simplify things and make bulb changes easy.
Less connections means less clutter.

One of my goals in turning these lamps into smaller banks is being able to put those banks on plugs. This should clean things up and give me cleaner wire to solder onto the lugs.
Often these older games require you cut the wire pretty far back to get to a point where you have wire that takes the solder well.
When that happens it shortens the harness and can make things tight.
This is what I plan to do.

The HEP gallery is partially back up and running.
There were some things that needed to be cleaned up there. The finished games section is in order.

I was able to add the Firepower to it which was nice since it is a title that wasn’t in there previously.

In some areas there were lights tied together from very far away that are actually very close.
These are an example.
There were 12 wires in total but only 4 of those were powering the lights 876481BB-C02C-4C78-8B4F-07FFF6B3ABCE (resized).jpeg876481BB-C02C-4C78-8B4F-07FFF6B3ABCE (resized).jpeg

This was condensed down to a much smaller and simpler layout. Less wires, less connections equals less confusion at the end of it all but it does take a good bit of thought and process to get there.

All the new banks are wired and on corresponding plugs on the new playfield.
The new insulated Buss wire is color correct and blends in well with the blue paint used for the underside. This was part of my plan.

I'm looking forward to you restoring one and matching the colors on one like this.

That one looks pretty bright I did a NOS playfield a few years ago that looked like that.
This one isn’t as vivid and I will be using a CPR that was sent with the game.
The cabinet will be much more under my control though.

what was the reasoning for painting the underside of this playfield dark blue? it seems to me like it's actually counterproductive for when you have to troubleshoot something. the darker color makes it more difficult to trace things (like the blue GI wire that you used)

Having done six of these now it is important to make both small and large changes to easily distinguish them apart.
On this one I am looking to make it as clean looking as possible on that ground floor level where the sockets tie together so what you are saying about that wire blending in is what I want. Sometimes on gray builds I use gray wire for the same reason so it is just a different color.
Troubleshooting will still be easier than ever with the ability to unscrew each lamp socket as well as unplug them in banks along with all switches, coils and even the GI.

Select a Card playfield is stripped and ready to begin restoration on. image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg

A few of the inserts just fell right out in the process.

I've never looked forward to a restore more than this one. Glad to see it finally making some progress!

Great! Something for everyone in here
I went ahead and removed the remaining inserts.
Will need to find some pictures before I reset them.
They have previously been glued in before but I am not so sure it was in the angles they should have been.

Curtis tries formula again for the first time in 21.5 years.
He liked it much better back then.

Here's a few pictures that may help. In my experience most of the 50's playfields were cleared with brushed on lacquer top to bottom. If you look at the last picture I'm sending and blow it up you can see the brush strokes. I use this as a guide when I redo my inserts. Hope this helps. On a side note I see you ordered new bumper caps. I would be interested in the originals if you are not keeping them.

Hi,
Where do you get new inserts ? PBR in NY or do you get the ones "cleaned up" that you removed ? Thanks
I prefer the fast gameplay of current machines-But-am more interested in these Early games in restoration and the techniques of days past !! Rock On HEP

The HG3 wiring is done.
That was a bigger task than normal but it went well.
