I'm not much for custom shooter knobs (in fact I usually hate them) but that matching skateboard wheel is hella rad.

Quoted from yancy:

Me either honestly.
I really don’t like them or toys but the owner supplied me with things he wanted and I was able to make it work and as tasteful as possible.

The shooter rod was a bit of a pain.
The one he sent had a red wheel and I just couldn’t use it so I had to break it all down.

I bought a multi colored set of the smallest Bones wheels I could find.
The orange one was the most ideal once I looked them over in person.

I had to drill out and reset the set up
It is bonded with a 3M body adhesive used to bond panels on cars. Not cheap and requires a special applicator gun and mixing nozzles E4745049-7A0E-4AEF-9035-B1FB09799680 (resized).jpegE4745049-7A0E-4AEF-9035-B1FB09799680 (resized).jpeg

I put a weep hole in there to best bond the bolt into the rod.

After a full 24 hours it was at full strength and assembled.

Now I’m gonna have nightmares of bees chasing me until I make it to the next skatepark.

I made a wheel shooter rod for my Radical and it does spin. It was a pain to get it just right, but worth the effort.

Also just got one of the latest run of Mirco TOM playfields.
Colors look much improved over the first run.
Clearcoat looks to be improved as well.

TOM is the only playfield I ever sent back. I wasn’t happy with it at all. So I sold the game I was going to restore. I’m glad to hear there’s an improved version

#5369 4 years ago

Power box ? Chrome or nickel plate.ty

#5370 4 years ago

I decided to prep and reclear the playfield
I could have almost used it as is but I just don’t want to take any chances missing something.
The two main things I saw were a slight run that would have been under the apron
A2CEE932-6E13-4CFC-81A7-BF6E6FFF0046 (resized).jpegA2CEE932-6E13-4CFC-81A7-BF6E6FFF0046 (resized).jpeg
And the shooter lane was a bit dry in the center. That was most likely from clear absorption in the raw wood 4141329F-E86E-415B-AE1F-F504DD7A791F (resized).jpeg4141329F-E86E-415B-AE1F-F504DD7A791F (resized).jpeg
Playfield was sanded. I noticed the clear is thinner on this batch and harder. Both are improvements.
I drilled out the topside t nut location that is under the trunk then countersunk and painted the t nut to match.

The lane was smoothed and other holes cleaned up.

How long do you let the clear dry before you can start putting a playfield back together after you spray it?

#5373 4 years ago
Quoted from Pin-Pilot:

How long do you let the clear dry before you can start putting a playfield back together after you spray it?

I am comfortable assembling any playfield that is dry enough to sand and polish.
That can be as quick as 3 days but I generally wait at least a week if it is one I need right away and as long as 2 months if it is one I am in no hurry for.
Also there is a big difference in playfields that are just lightly recleared like the SC or TOM more recently than those that get a lot of repaints and multiple clear sessions. Those need to set about 2 weeks minimum so all the repairs and repaints are fully settled prior to final sanding and polishing.

Impressive clear coats. You make it look so easy. Helps when you have a dedicated paint booth. You use a orbital polisher? what do you use for the polish!

When Chris sent me these pics, I looked at this perfectly yellow-matched t-nut and thot to myself “who does that?” Maybe the slightest edge will be seen. Maybe.

Well, Chris does- and that’s why he gets my business.
He is such an asset to this hobby, gifted and a real gentleman too.
Thanks, buddy

Are you kidding me? Look at that - it’s a total hack job. He didn’t even bother to carry the blue details through the t-nut.

TOTALLY kidding. Great work!

I thought the same when I saw that, but it's not the least surprising. Details matter in whatever you do ... and people usually (not always) will notice when you put the effort in. Great work as always Chris.

True enough. When I got my first game from Chris- I noted that all the screw heads were perfectly aligned throughout the game! I am always amazed, but I am no longer surprised. It’s those details that make his games so coveted. And his details are not just aesthetic- but usually very very functional and make a difference in game play and less maintenance.

It is great to see you here in the thread.
If it were not for you,DJB,and a few others in the early days HEP would have never even gotten off the ground floor let alone been able to evolve into the quality levels and experience I have today.
Doing this TOM for you is one of the highlights of this year and I really mean that no ass kissing. To still have some of the same customers and honestly friends after 15 years is a true blessing and really makes me feel like I have done things the right way over these many years.

Chipping away at the SC
When I tore down the old playfield for the needed parts I organized the washers and lock nuts.
These are always a pain to pick out of the tumbler then a pain to pick the media out of.
That was solved with some simple zip ties.

Then I had my Sunday festivities.

SC has its looms turned up to better clear mechs. Even at that it still could use a little more clearance in some spots.
What I will do is switch to the TAF loom brackets.
TAF didn’t need those taller ones to start with but they will come in handy on SC.

Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Four target banks, three flippers, jet bumpers, vari target, spinning dial, subway ,and more all in this little area.

How do you prevent your clearcoated playfileds to start ghosting on the big inserts? Especially MM, CV and AFM Playfields are critical after clearcoating them.
Thanks Pat

Making some pretty good progress on the SC playfield.

Really not much can be done during the clearcoating process to prevent or predict future ghosting possibilities.
If it is present at the time of it can be dealt with on some level but after the playfield is recleared it may or may never return.
The issue with ghosting is it happens below the original surface and screening.
It is the loosening of the screened layer from the plastic lens creating a cloudy Look within the insert.
The work done or layers of protection added on top of that really isn’t going to have a big impact on how those two surfaces are bonded to one another other than to stabilize them from chipping away and beautify it.

Parts were then ready to pull from the tumbler.
Really can’t understand why I did not think of this 15 years ago but whatever!

Freaking genius!!! Did the parts come out just as good, or how did it work with them sandwiched together? It's definitely one of those palm on forehead moments

They turned out great The key is to leave some slack in there for them to move around.

I agree, I love this. It was so annoying to pull media out of lock nuts, I just always replaced them lol.

Hey Chris,

I may have missed someone asking before but do you have and collect pins at this point? Do you play or with doing all the restores you find you don't want to play once your day job is done.

Just curious.

Love the thread. It's impressive and keeps me motivated to work on my projects.
