Quoted from High_End_Pins:

Broke out the GI BCS and grabbed my board.
Probably a bad combo.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Let's see how much of my old skater knowledge I can dredge up here.

Deck looks to be a Powell-Peralta of some sort. Gonna be safe and guess a Tony Hawk.

Wheels are clearly Bones.

Trucks are likely Indy's.

Am I close?

#5052 48 days ago

From what I understand, Tony Hawk’s likeness was used. It would make sense that the gear was his, too.

This is the original ‘Tony Hawk Pro Skater’

Very it’s a Steve Caballero.

Dammit! I knew that, actually. Had that same deck in white. That's why it seemed so familiar.

Maybe.
I always thought the guy on the sides looked a lot like Mike McGill.
The inventor of the Mctwist(540).

Even back then, there were a bunch more than 5 members of the Bones Brigade. I'm stoked to see all the skateboarding pin fans out here!!! If any of you consider yourselves one of them, check out this thread: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/any-pinsiders-still-skate-skateboard

The pink Lance Mountain deck was my first pro deck in the late 80’s.

Head is on lower. This is an original head I reworked. The lower is new.
If a game of this era has a nice reworkable head I don’t mind using that because glass, lock fit etc are pretty time consuming when starting with a new one. Most need new heads too though.

Are you using leds for the GI on the Radical? If so which color and type would you suggest?

#5063 47 days ago
Quoted from patrickvc:

Probably will.
I usually use Comet 2smd warm frosted in the GI.
Sometimes on the more futuristic, space theme or blue games like BSD I can see the value of the natural white frosted. That is only on those types of games.
Radical will be a little tougher to zero in on because on one hand it has the bluer, purple cooler element. On the other are these guys skating in the sun? Probably so warmer makes sense.
Now you have me thinking out loud

Maybe sunlight 2smd frosted?

I put them in my #DW.

The warm cast an odd yellow color on the blue, red and orange.

Sunlight brightened it up a bit with little off-color cast.

Curtis needs to work on flattening that back on those rows. CHEST UP! Go lighter if he has to. Your row looks perfect.

You nailed it...Lance Mountain and Tommy Guerrero...those are probably considered the original 5. There were others I am sure but these are known to most.

I know sometimes I cringe about the form too but we are working on it .Takes direction and time.
I think he probably needs to go back down in the weight for that one. His form is much better at the lighter weights. As he increases he has that natural tendency to either use momentum or duck his head forward to shorten it.
He”ll get there.

Quoted from Pickle:

I think that Rodney Mullen was part of it too but I remember despising freestyle skating back in the day
It was strictly vert for me I was lucky enough to have a nice ramp of my own in the backyard and there were a couple other ones in the area.

#5081 47 days ago

HG 2 cabinet is wired and powered up for testing.

Sticking with the more original style on this one with the bare wood tilt panel.
image (resized).jpg
image (resized).jpg

The last few games of the era that I installed new displays in I have been using the Pinitech Uno displays and I have been really happy with them. The adjustability of them in both brightness and position is really helpful.

Not to completely derail the thread, but Mullen was a man *way* before his time.

In an era where the "boneless" was considered an actual trick, he was doing all the stuff we see today with kickflips, etc. I recall dreading his sections of the Bones Brigade videos when they first came out, but in hindsight realize I simply didn't recognize the genius.

Almost ready to start building the HG 2 playfield up.
First I need to grey it again.
This one got scuffed up during the rework.
I use grey autobase. Dries quick. Mini roller works well.

These are not real forgiving when it comes to placement. The front is the first to place as a result.

It is the small details in the columns that make it unforgiving.

#5085 46 days ago

Two things are at play when placing the sides. The up and down is one but the front to back is another and both directions will have a direct impact on how well the corner details line up.
There is really no room for error. Even a 1/16 could be hard to hide in the alignment.
The left is placed D5A7BABC-787C-450C-AABE-E664B37D8ACE (resized).jpeg

Next step for that will be finishing the corners out.

#5087 46 days ago

Excellent alignment! That's what makes a huge difference in the final product! Do you always put the front on first or just sometimes when you have to align the corners? Did you know in advance the right side would line up or just did the left side and assumed it would line up? One of my favorite tips I picked up from reading your posts is sanding the edges, makes a much much better job than I was ever able to achieve with a razor blade.

#5088 46 days ago

Time to do the front corners.
This is paint work.

I don’t like black corners on colored cabinets anymore than I like razor blade cut edges.
For me it is something I can do differently/ better so I often have to highlight this process because it is a more subtle detail but a very important one
Kill the tape and place it.

Paper mask.
image (resized).jpg
Base the yellow first. image (resized).jpg
Now red and black specks. image (resized).jpg
Then some manual work
image (resized).jpg
And we have a much more convincing looking set of corners.

Yep..he was a part of it for sure but was not sure anyone here would know who he was.

Some old school Rodney for anyone that never saw Freestyle in the 80’s....this guy was considered the best at the time for freestyle.
