Quoted from pokerag2:

What is regraining of the metal mean? How is it accomplished? Thanks.

It means refreshing the metal to make it look as it did when new.
It is done by sanding in the same direction and pattern as. The metal
I will highlight that tomorrow or so as I do the IJ ball guides.

This week will start with building the underside of the Grand Prix playfield. image (resized).jpg

On a game of this era with the cloth wire and parts that don’t break down and wash easily like the newer games I remove the playfield harness and mechs off as one whole unit leaving them roughly in the same layout. image (resized).jpg

While I cannot wash th assemblies what I will do is blow it all off with compressed air and then clean and inspect everything from there. All coil sleeves will be replaced
image (resized).jpg

Lamp sockets also image (resized).jpg

If the layout will allow it is likely that I will replace the lamp strips with individual sockets but if not I will clean and rework them. There are 4 in total with 10 sockets each for a total of 40.

Chris,

Why don't you paint the complete inside of the head. The OCD in me wants to know...

Quoted from Rondogg:

Chris,
Why don't you paint the complete inside of the head. The OCD in me wants to know...

That is because within the head there are lots of crevices for dust and lint to hide and when spraying I don’t want to drum them up and have them land in the parts of the job that are actually seen.
Another reason is it is very easy to run the face of the head so the possibility of overlap trying to cover the inside fully and running the outside isn’t worth the effort.

Progress is slow on this Grand Prix playfield rebuild.
image (resized).jpg

After fooling with the wiring a little and the brittle nature of all these 40 year old solder points and rigid cloth wire I decided just to stick with my normal thought process and build a Little cleanliness and serviceability into the parts where I can.
One flipper is done. but I now officially have a game plan. image (resized).jpg

I will do that with all the two and three lead coils.
I think I will do it with the 7 lead drop target assemblies as well and that will allow me to really go through them image (resized).jpg

No way I am going that route on the bigger 30 plus lead assemblies.

Wow, an EM. All those relays and springs...

If only you could transistorize all that... WAIT! With through hole, not SMT. Don't want to get flamed into oblivion...

#457 1 year ago

I bet you've never seen any other pinball machines cabinet loaded to the hilt like a Grand Prix.

Quoted from mcbPalisade:

If only you could transistorize all that..

No, half the EM experience is the feel of the game as all those relays are clicking and clacking.

#458 1 year ago

The switches that tie directly to coils are removed, cleaned polished lightly scuffed at the contact points and gapped. FFE94475-FB6F-41BD-B962-124DDBBB8182 (resized).jpeg

I then mimic the original wiring with my own

Rebuilt. On plugs.

Getting there on the Grand Prix playfield. image (resized).jpg

Found a little time to antique the plated Idol head for IJ.
That was tougher than I anticipated because the type of finish you would use to “wash” it didn’t stick so I had to do it by hand with much more robust and less forgiving paint.

3047A396-E763-41B1-841B-F9F358E3B260 (resized).jpeg

Did it with the wash method first. CCACC42F-DAD4-40F2-9495-873E9688A9B7 (resized).jpeg
2BE60724-924F-4BF3-BF64-7A92C1672B85 (resized).jpeg

Just didn’t stick
Went with a lacquer based brown just to test the waters because it accents but if mistakes are made or it doesn’t work it is more forgiving
FDBD52F8-221E-4EF9-8416-A76154D3D80E (resized).jpeg

After I confirmed it would stick and the owner preferred black it was a go. Pretty close to the original all things considered.

The coils and assemblies from the Grand Prix that could reasonably be placed on plugs have been done and placed on the playfield.

Now I have this to work through and transfer.

Anyone know what kind of see through making tape is used when the playfields are touched and cleared?

Read back through the threads. Frisket.

Transfer of the harness and remaining mechs is is underway.

Boy, there’s a lot of stuff hanging off those EMs! Must be heavy when it’s complete. Amazing what they accomplished back in the day with steppers, relays and motors. One of my hobbies is collecting and restoring 50s and 60s jukeboxes. Most of their selection systems are all mechanical; a lot like pinball machines.

Grand Prix Playfield wiring is complete.

All individual sockets were replaced. And all wire is now insulated.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#471 1 year ago

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what holds the clear tubing in place? It looks like it will slide down the wire once the playfield is flipped.

Nylon ties later.

Nice looking em underside!

Grand Prix playfield is in the cabinet.

Powered up
Turns on so that is a good start.

This Grand Prix might be the nicest EM on the planet!

Apron is on.
image (resized).jpg

Ready to place the backglass.
image (resized).jpg

When it arrived someone had color flooded it once removed I can see why.

As has been the case with the rest of the game I will do what I can.
Backglass touch ups are difficult because it isn’t just the color that is an issue it is the transparency.

#478 1 year ago

May I ask where you got the apron cards? I’d like to get them too.

Quoted from chuckwurt:

May I ask where you got the apron cards? I’d like to get them too.

Got those from JR Davies.
I like them for a mix of original and slightly enhanced.

Jrdavies@frontier.com I believe is the correct contact.

Changed it to .com after searching my contacts.

Backglass is touched up as well as possible.

#481 1 year ago

Backglass now installed and looks good overall.
When lit you would have to be looking for it which is the transparency concern.

VERY presentable touch ups on the BG. Average person standing at flippers would not really notice.
Appreciate you sharing what you find in each game you repair/restore and the techniques you use.

#483 1 year ago

Do you seal the BG to prevent further damage?

#484 1 year ago
Quoted from Toucanf16:

Do you seal the BG to prevent further damage?

I do not.
If the glass were truly bubbling and flaking overall I might do that but if the glass is overall decent it could do more harm than good.

What paint did you use, looks like enamel?

IJ cabinet is wired and that will be the next game to assemble. image (resized).jpg

Pinball Magic is done finally.
First and last appearance for that one in this thread.

#495 1 year ago

Will need some time to sort this one out for sure.
Air horn mod?

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#496 1 year ago

Time to look in my TAF bin just so I can start planning this project.

These are my biggest concerns at a glance. There are some parts laying in the cabinet but the status is unknown so I at least have a bookcase that is rebuild able and a thing motor and gearbox

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#497 1 year ago

Careful, that TAF has an alarm system!

#498 1 year ago
Quoted from jawjaw:

Careful, that TAF has an alarm system!

They should have been more worried about it being broken in two than broken into.

#499 1 year ago

bookcase? no, we don't need that. this is the SLE, complete with a huge gobble hole

I'm guessing that the airhorn is part of that fantastic approved burger alarm security system?

Quoted from paul_8788:

No, the ad said, "Fully Shopped".
