At the request of the owner I will document this restoration via this thread.
Starting out with a pretty rough cabinet.
Floor is collapsed and has major moisture issues so we will start in the upright position.

Tearing it down now.
Corrosion and surface rust are present and expected given the moisture issues.

Solenoid harness removed.
I do have game specific nickel plated brackets for most TAF coils. The few I don't will be done or polished by hand.

If you get a reimport can you redo the cab wiring and decals to make it look like a North American?

I was never a big AF fan until I played one that Chris restored the difference is remarkable.

Not sure about that yet I should probably check

Wiring removal complete.
Most of the mechs and stuff are peiced together and will need some extra attention or parts.
Scoops all broken.
Knocker is also rigged.

Playfield is being stripped topside.
Playfield will be reworked considering the few alternatives and endless delays for a repro.
Playfield is pulled.
It has a knotty and rough shooter lane and just typical wear.
I have definitely seen worse.

Playfield is being prepared for the first clear.
Mostly looking to get some good adhesion and stabilize the surface prior to really getting into it.
I sanded the shooter lane free and clear of chipping but she's cut from a pretty ugly peice of wood so we have some enhancing to do later one .

Hole repairs are roughed in. They will need more finesse but just an initial shoring up of the splintering wood is the best course of action right now.

New head is being prepped.
There are certain holes to be drilled for TAF.
People may think a new cabinet is less work but if you really understand what is involved it is more but the results are completely worth it.
This is the body of the game essentially the foundation.

The hardware removed will be picked through and harvested for only the specific parts needed.
The rest will be replaced with new because it is just too rusty.

Trash in the big bin.
Keepers in the cups one for the cab one for the playfield.
Cabinet bolts are ready after being blasted.
Bolts are then metal etched and that will stay until the cabinet is actually painted .At that time I will use the same paint to refinish the bolts.

Head is prepped to prime.
This involves making sure the face is perfectly smooth and completely flat/true.
Filling is part of that process and even though little stays behind it has to be done entirely first.

Agreed. I hate the open grain look. I go to great measures as well to make it go away. Same goes for the top edge of the front panel under the lockdown bar.

Lower masked. Ready to prime.
I use Catalyzed epoxy primers that will absorb well into the wood fibers and further harden as well seal them.
These are also high build products that will aid in perfecting the surface when sanded.

There is a pricing decal that was painted over in the coin entry bezel. That has to be stripped back to metal.
Once stripped it is metal etched then texture sprayed to build back to the factory look.
Once the texture cures I will looses assemble the door metal parts and refinish entirety.
Done this way to insure that the future spatter matches up.

Cabinet is now cleared as well as the other parts.
Glossy now but will gloss down a little as it cures. Ir will still have a little more gloss by design to compliment the trim used.

Plan on getting into the playfield repaints later today if I am not too tired.
While the cabinet flashes off (dries enough to move out of the way) I will work on myself a bit.Too rainy to run so it is inside to the pinball dojo
