I am trying to look into either replacing or repairing the DMD on my RBION machine. I wanted to do my due diligence and check connections/cables before anything and I can’t seem to find any resources that show this same weird cable addition the previous owners added.

Can anyone tell me what I’m looking at with the yellow/gray cables going directly from the DMD to the extension cable and maybe why this would need to be done?

original, these wires are GND and +5Volt. Not sure why this is done this way.

edit: Maybe the HighVoltage supply for gas display is no longer needed because this is a LED display

zaza Interesting, my first thought was maybe this was aftermarket.

Is there an easy way to tell if it is indeed a non-plasma display?

l if it is indeed a non-plasma display?

The power connector and the nummerous solderpads on the backside of the display-pcb, tells that this is indeed an LED display.
From the frontside, you will see the 8x8 LED blocks

Yes, this is exactly it.

I have modified a few of my classic games to accept these newer 5VLED Stern displays. They look especially great on Transformers and Getaway.

That’s actually great news considering how hard it is to find the old plasma displays.
Do you have any info on the connectors that you use? This one was just loosely soldered then duct taped so I would like to fix that up when I am able to find a new DMD.

There's a couple options. The quick and cheap option would be to use heat shrink tubing. You could also install a "Z-style" molex type connector where the pins go through a reversed connector to the other side. No soldering if you go that route.
