Picked up a pin last Friday and noticed a very audible static sound. Had some time this morning and opened it up. Apparently it is the transformer. Is this shorted windings? Can it be repaired or do I have to find another? If so, if anyone has a transformer for a Data East Star Wars i'm in the market for one

Try tightening all the screws that run through the plates - with the power off, of course.

Did you verify the bolts holding the laminations together are tight?

If they are, an old EM trick is to smack it with a hammer.

Is this true? I just had an image of Gallagher pop into my head

Most motor repair shops will "shellac" it and then bake it their oven for ~$30.

Yes, a few light hits with a ball peen hammer does it.
Same thing with magnetized coil stops remove them tap with a hammer and re install.

    Awesome! Good to know.

Screws were all tight. Hitting it with a hammer did the trick. How permanent a solution is this?

    AWESOME!

Does hitting the frame with a hammer demagnetize the frame? What's up with the hammer whack?

    #14 10 years ago

If the plates are moving against each other, hitting them with a hammer might bend them just enough to keep them from buzzing.

If the coils are moving, it can eventually wear off the wire coatings and short the transformer.

Some transformers have little wooden shims between the coils that expand when warm - so it might buzz when cold, but then stop when warm.

Audiophiles go insane when their transformers buzz.......

Never heard of whacking a transformer before....now, this is the second time in a month.

Too funny. I can't believe that noise!
