Help with JD and entering high scores

So my JD appears to be working perfectly except when you go to add your initials for a high score. It immediately punches in AAA and enters it. It's like the enter button (which button is that anyway?) is being held down.

There are no issues when turning on the machine and starting games. It doesn't auto start them (assuming the start button is the enter button for high scores).

Change your initials to AAA.

But in the real world. First I would go into switch edge test and see if any switches are closed that should be open.

None ? Then moving on I'd be thinking normal switch matrix issue - switch wired wrong, diode on backwards, or a short to switch wiring or switch lugs - and this can be anywhere on the playfield or game.

I'd also check the start button and nearby coin door interface board - be sure they are clean of dust. Dust from the flipper wear can have metal in it and cause weird issues.

Looks like the start button is closed and should be open. Wires going to it look okay.

Cool. You found a problem.

For a start disconnect the wires - still closed ? If so from there into your game you have a problem.

If not - then be sure wires are on the right spots on the switch, and that the switch isn't bad.
Wires should be on C ( common ) and NO ( Normally open ).

Thanks for your help.....I'll dig into it.

Could be corrosion on the CPU board, too.

No corrosion on CPU board.

So here is where I'm at. I noticed that if I hold in the start button when it goes to enter initials that I can in fact put them in. I hold it in select the letter and then release for it to punch it in....and so on.

So I figured it was wired backwards and I reversed the connections on the switch. No change.

Try a different switch, and wires to the right spots. ( I posted previously )

Sorry...I also swapped the switch with one that I know was working perfectly (The "buy an extra ball" switch). The "buy an extra ball" button is working just fine with the "start button's" switch in it, while the start button is still behaving as described.

Have you gone into switch edge test and see if it or any other switches are closed that should be open.

If start button is the only one, then go over the basics of a switch matrix issue. Switch wired wrong, diode on backwards, or a short to switch wiring. And you'll need to check all your switches.

Check the coin door interface board too, to be sure nothing is behind it, or dust on the fornt conducting electricity.

Try re-seating all the connectors on the coin door interface board and the CPU and see if it makes any difference. Sometimes something simple like this can do the trick.

Hi did this issue ever get solved? Pretty old thread but I'm thinking of picking up a JD that has this issue...

the switch has 3 connections. The outer 2 are the ones you want. The one closest to the button should not be connected
