I am looking for help valuing a fully restored 1978 Bally Playboy. Thinking of selling it, but want to be fair on pricing. I don’t have to sell it (and may not), but it’s been quite a few years since I’ve been on the selling end. If everyone thinks this is a $3k game, that’s fine (but not selling there). I happen to think it’s worth more but don’t want to taint opinions by revealing that first.

Game was fully restored. Full cabinet restoration or new cabinet (have to look, don’t remember) that was done with correct stencils and matching paint, NOS backglass, Bally NOS original playfield that has been clear coated, NOS playfield plastics, new drop targets, new legs, original boards, working 100%, PDI glass. Been in climate controlled basement/game room since delivery. Never seen another one as nice. Probably 200, maybe 300 games on it tops.

I need to pull it out and get pics with glass off and inside, etc. but it’s in comparable condition.

I doubt there’s any more NOS original playfields, but clearly a restoration could be done today with a CPR.

Thoughts?

Quoted from vid1900:

Was the clearcoat brushed on?
It looks like there are brush strokes or roughness in some areas.

I thought he sprayed it, but honestly don’t remember. I’ll have to see if I have any notes. Ray Jackson from Action Amusements in Salt Lake City did the work for anyone that knows his work.

Appreciate the thoughts. I’ll have to go look at the inserts closely. I can see what I think your seeing, but some of that may be lighting. Maybe the inserts have shifted in 18 years.

If that isn’t an NOS playfield then the one I brought to SLC got swapped/lost somewhere. That would certainly reduce the value and I certainly don’t want to list the game as having an NOS field if it isn’t/wasn’t one.

It may all be moot though because I won’t even consider selling it in the $2k range even with taking the PDI glass out. I certainly couldn’t replicate the game with a new repro PF for that $ and the game is nice enough as it is for me.

Not sure what the 6 thing is but the pics were taken on an iPhone with the live photo thing. It’s not noticeable live.

@buzz I think you are right about the lane plastics. I’ll fix that because now that you pointed it out, it will bug me ...

@jj44114 $1500 is about what I would expect to pay for a donor game.

If I kept the cabinet it would cost me $700 for a PF, $600 to clear it, $600-$1k to have someone swap the PF (can’t do that work myself anymore) and that just doesn’t make sense since I’m the only one in the family (wife, two grown daughters) that likes the game. Thy don’t mind the theme, just think the game is boring.

I found an rgp post from 13 years ago in which Ray refers to an NOS playfield and references what I’m pretty sure are pictures from my game. My wife remembers shipping an NOS playfield. If that’s correct than either it wasn’t actually an NOS PF or something else happened. I can’t imagine I would have agreed to clear an old PF, but it really doesn’t matter. That was so long ago.

I really like the game and if it isn’t valuable enough to sell for much more than an average game, it doesn’t make sense for me to until I need the room for another game (which may be never).

Thanks for the comments and observations.

Quoted from jj44114:

Looks like a couple digits are out. Connectors maybe. Again its really an average machine that needs a restoration, and we have not seen the inside which most likely, is not pretty.

No digits are out. That’s some sort of bizarre iPhone Live Photo artifact.

Quoted from Bugsy:

Also, what is this spot here? Hard to tell if it's due to lighting, a shadow, if it's a smudge on the glass, etc. But my first instinct is that it looks like an attempted touch up job with unmatched paint.

No, that’s on the PF. I presume that’s been there from the beginning. That’s really the only thing that bothers me, but I didn’t notice it until I set up the game which wasn’t done for some time after I got it.

Quoted from Buzz:

I have an original in players condition, but that stuff doesn't bother me like it used too. My top plastics are not so white anymore and I think the red you have is nice. You should keep it and enjoy it. 70's Ballys kick ass.

It looks like replacement whites are going to be hard find so the reds might just stay.

Did you check The Pinball Resource? Steve is my go to guy for that kind of stuff.

Was going to call him, thanks.
