    I have several pins with EL aprons. They use "inverters" that look a whole lot like power supplies. Anyone?

    In short, EL wire and some other types of lighting effects use high voltages. Inverters do just that - pump up voltage, sometimes with a AC frequency, to power EL wire.

    You can get them.. well, look at the above link. There are plenty of places out there..!
