I'm not new to soldering, but these boards are very difficult to work on without damaging them further.

Yes...1000s of times. But it takes the right tools and technique to do it right.
I hate, hate, hate to hear stories like this. Most people are better off sending the board to a pro.
Marco sells a "cap and bridge" kit for the WPC power driver board. That is malpractice.
