I recently Picked up a Laser War machine!!
There are a few issues with it but one major problem - the sounds are out of order and the talking comes on randomly (out of step with play) throughout the game.
For example, it always says "Last ball!" on every ball, and it will say "return to yellow base...return to blue base", etc." randomly throughout the game even when it is not part of what is happening. In fact, the talking is almost always happening, there is very little "just music" throughout the game?
Any thoughts of what that could be?
I am not a tech in any sense of the word, but the game is not enjoyable to play right now, especially as I am trying to learn it and it is giving me false instructions!
Thoughts?
Thanks!

I'd try a factory reset to clear garbage out of memory.

See if that helps.

Are you familiar with these great web sites:

Often there are FAQs etc available for common issues.

And if you need a manual:

Yes thank you I've seen both sights. Actually the 1st sight is what I referred too originally as I thought maybe my sound roms were in the wrong order. But no dice unfortunately.

Here is a picture of my sound board.

Anyone other ideas?

Things I've tried so far.
- factory reset
- taking the board out of the back box.
- taking out and re setting the 3 sound roms
- put board back and plugging everything back in. Checking that each cable is snug.
- re set the ribbon cable on the main board and sound board.

Nothing has helped at all unfortunately. I can't find much info on this issue. I'd really love to get this fixed but don't know what else to try.

I've read sometimes ribbon cables can cause an issue like I'm having. Anyone know where I can get a new ribbon cable for this?

I actually had a spare 20 pin ribbon cable hanging around from another game. I hooked that up and still have the issue. So I guess it's not that.

This sounds like something similar, and it's a connector issue, but at the pins. Maybe try reseating again a few times, and inspect the pins at the MPU end and sound board end for damage.

Could also be failing 12V supplied, do you have the tools to check voltages?

For future reference, you'll get more bites on tech help threads with a more specific thread title, something like "Data East / Sega 1 (Laser Wars) sound issues. Please help!". Someone who's experienced your issue before may notice a title like that and chime in, but ignore a general title with no information in it.

Good luck!

Evan thank you for the suggestion on a better title for the thread. I agree that my original title was pretty week.

I'll check out the two threads you suggested and see if they can help at all.

I'm still searching for a solution to this. Maybe I have to call in a professional to look at it. As it seems there is very little documentation about this issue. I did find another thread where someone had the same issue but no one helped him. I wonder if he ever figured it out!

He prob. sold it 2 years ago b/c he couldn't find a solution and I have his old game now! Or it's a problem that happens with these and only affects a small number of us.

Bump....

Hopefully someone will see this with some ideas. I'm still looking for a solution.

Well I still haven't found a solution! Hopefully someone will see this and chime in.
