Hi,

Yesterday, I tried to start my LOTR for the first time in a month. Machine boots, shows ball 1, but ball is not put in shooter lane. Tried to run a coil test from diag screen and the test rotates through coils as if nothing is wrong , but the coils are not invoked. If I let it sit, and take a ball out of the machine the search for missing balls seems to activate coils. If I take a ball manually and put it in shooter, I can play it for awhile and rack up done points but game stops working half way through ball play as if I lost the ball.

Any ideas? I should mention I moved the machine about 6 feet before I booted it yesterday so maybe I shook something loose?

Please get me started in the right direction to troubleshoot.

Thank you!

Check the fuses?

#3 10 years ago

High power interlock switch on coin door enabled when checking coils ?

Then pull and check fuses with a meter.

While in there look around for any connectors that may have come loose or off.

Hi LTR,

I pulled out the high power interlock switch and ran the coil check.

It cycles through the first 12 coils with no response, the last few coils (flippers, bumpers and flashers) function fine.

Sometimes when I start the machine it goes through a ball search process for 20 seconds, despite the fact I've taken the balls out and put them back in several times.

This machine worked perfectly the last time I had it on and this is really strange.

Also, the machine is nearly perfect and does not have many plays on it after all these years. Not a spec of dust on it, either.

Fuses "look" fine, and I'm about to start pulling them, but they looks so new (Not sure if that is any indication whether they work or not).

Nevertheless I'll start pulling them because I can't think of anything else to test right now.

Any further advice based is appreciated from all.

To test the fuses, use a Multi-meter to check for continuity. (http://www.pinrepair.com/begin/#dmm)

I'd also check that the fuse holders are making good contact with the fuses.

I had the same type of problem working on a pal's LOTR.

Make sure you check the fuses of course, but also check the fuse holder, and make sure it's holding the fuse tightly.

I went round and round checking fuses, until I noticed the holder was loose. Pinched it together, and haven't had a problem since.

Hi All,

The problem has been fixed!

Yes, it was a fuse and I found it by testing all of them with a multimeter as suggested by all.

Thank you for pointing me to a tutorial and encouraging me to test and not replace. Once I learned how to test them it went very quickly.

The pin sure acted strangely when the fuse was out!

Thank you all again!

Regards,
Steve
