Help: My LOTR is killing my sparetime and my fuses

Hello guys, I need help there.
My #LOTR was working quite ok when i got it. It has been used a lot but playfield is really nice.
It had a non working bumper and diverter was not set good for orthanc, but that was all.
Then during a game, F21 fuse burnt, replaced with a 4A SB rolling around, bumper coil fried with some TIP, lesson learnt, overfuse on whitestar is quite touchy..
Anyway, TIP changed and controlled, bad coil removed and other bumper coils tested, diode too. F21 received a 3A SB
Plugged everything, and going to test mode. All coils are working correctly !
Nice and easy..
Played a couple of games, damn i love this game.
Ok, a good use of my time..

Then, F21 burn, during ball search.
All the game was working well, can't determine the reason now. 50V is at 75V stable, ring and balrog working well without issue.
Reseat all connectors, no bad connectors there
Any ideas ?? Help needed there.

Run the coil test one at a time and see if any cause it?

I did that and all coils were working well.

Look in the manual and see what F21 fuse is associated with or what it controls.

F21 is your main solenoid fuse, it powers all coils in the game (except for the flippers and magnet)

If you have a shorted, or backwards coil diode, this fuse will blow the moment the TIP turn on, the excessive current usually destroys the TIP, and often the diode as well. I would say check your coil wiring, especially those that were worked on and make sure the YEL-VIO wire is on the same coil lug as the diodes cathode (striped side) if you find one that's not, correct the wiring AND replace both the TIP and the diode.

NOTE: Anytime you replace Q1-16 in this game, its best to upgrade the original STP20N10L to the beefier IRL540.

Thank you for your messages, and happy easter.
I have traced the whole f21 line yel-vio.
One coil was burnt, so i cut wires and isolated them keeping the yellow loop intact for following coils.
When i put a fuse, i can play, i can test all coils and flashers without issue. In test mode, all activate well on request.
Last time, i killed the balrog in multi with all followers safe across the bridge.
I was happy enough to consider the game was stable. Put back the glasses, made a last game, then.. Tadaa, no more f21.
I wonder if it was blown during a ball search.

Can anyone confirm that ball search is just a sequential activation of all coils ?

Sounds like a short is being created when one of the coils activated

The ball search is a sequential activation of the coils.

have you looked at every coil to ensure that nothing is shorted as stated above? When you take out the balls and lift the play field, the wires and such are not in the same position as when the game is in the payable position. So look at how the underside of the play field looks and imagine it when the play field is down.

As a sanity check, try putting electrical tape on the lugs of coils that could be considered potential problems.

The other thing to try is to take all coils out of the circuit and force a ball search. Then add back a coil one at a time until it fails.

Agree, according to Pinguy's diagram the auto-launch is the first place I'd look.

I'm stuck as i'm awaiting a new eprom for my cpu, mine had a weak pin

While waiting for my new eprom, i was trying to find what could be the root cause of this issue. The pinball was working well, then became buggy.
Then i realized that one thing had been modified between these two steps. I had flashed 10.02 cpu eprom and installed a new PAL on u213 to add a shaker.
Eprom received, i flashed v10.0 and put the initial PAL..

And everything works without issue now..

That one was not easy, as the flipper was working, booting with correct version displayed.but at the end, that was not perfectly working.
Maybe my cpu has a weakness that is triggered by the PAL or the PAL is defective.. That's another Journey !!

Thanks guys for your advices. I'm back on track to destroy the ring
