I posted the same question in the Comet owner's club thread a while ago, but I haven't gotten any replies-I think due to less eyeballs on that particular thread. I'm about ready to finish up a shop job and was hoping to figure it out before I finish. Here's a copy/paste of the original post:
I thought I took enough pics before taking everything apart for a thorough cleaning, but I apparently did not. In all fairness it's been about 6 months since I took everything apart, and my memory is not the best.
Where on earth does this mystery (to me) piece of metal go?
    Any help would be appreciated.

The only large metal piece I could think of is here.
By the right side four bank, by the exit of main ramp.. Thing is your metal part is different.

What's the size of that? I've stripped down two comets and that doesn't ring a bell at all.

Ditto - doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen on a Comet.

It's 4 1/2" by 1/2". One end has a tab on it and the other end has a significant curve starting at a little over the halfway point. There is also the letter "B" stamped into it on one side. No other markings or indicators.
I've scoured the manual and other parts catalogues and have come up with nothing.
It definitely came off the playfield somewhere, as this Comet is the only pin I own, and it wasn't around before I stripped it down. I've been racking my brain and I just can't remember where I got it from. I had a theory that it went in behind the corkscrew ramp to protect it from rubbing the playfield runners as you tilt it up and lean it against the backbox in the extreme upright position.
I say this because when I lift mine, if I'm not careful I can hear the back of the corkscrew ramp rubbing and trying to catch.

I looked through my Comet teardown pics and that part is not a part that came on a Comet.

It may have been some sort of modification then. This is not an original Comet part. I have rebuilt two, plus examined the one I have here at the office.

are you sure this was not something laying around in the cabinet? Looks like a home made tool of some sorts.

I guess it must have been. My son helped clean out the inside of the cabinet, and maybe this was laying in there. I'll ask him when he gets home from school.
    He probably won't remember though.
Thanks everyone, I feel much better now that I haven't completely forgotten where this part goes!

    Quoted from woody76:

Thats it, part of the coin door lock assembly

    Quoted from midcoastsurf:

Coin door latch mechanism. Interesting! My Comet just had the regular coin door lock.

Yes, that is a part from a different game series, not from Comet. Comet has a standard coin door lock from that era.

I own a comet and have never seen that before?

Mine has the black tabs with the slots. The mech must have just been removed at some point.

Mystery solved! Thanks for the help.

Interesting. I was focused on playfield. This is a pic of a coin door from IPDB, which is like the ones I had. They just have the standard rotating short lock, but clearly you can also see the metal tabs with the slots at the top and bottom of the coin door. Perhaps they made a run with some of each, perhaps running out of one style or another, or changed for costs. Typical production mumbo jumbo, lol.
