Game: Spring Break.
In a single player game, the is a random digit displayed in the player-2 score area. Does not happen in attract mode or during entering initials for a high score. It is always the same digit/segment group. It always happens as follows: Start a game, every time the display cycles between players' scores and "Press Flipper To Launch", one digit will appear in the player-2 area if in a single player game when displaying player-1's score.
It changes every time it comes back to displaying scores and ALWAYS follows this sequence:

A -> 1, -> 5 -> 5 -> 3 -> 9 -> 7 -> all segments except for comma -> all segments including comma -> at that point, it always shows all segments and comma.

Which ever one it is when you launch will be displayed during the entire ball and will cycle to the next during pre-launch of next ball.

If playing with 2 or more, it only happens when the player-2 area is inactive. If player 2 is playing, it displays score correctly. If player 3 or 4 are playing, it displays the playfield multiplier stars correctly. After a 2+ player game, attract mode displays player-2's previous game's score with a garbled digit in the one location where it always is.

Doesn't seem like the biggest deal on its own and I would've guessed it was something with the display board, BUT - I cannot access the test mode! Push the test button once, it displays TEST MODE as it should. Push it again and it should display LEFT CHUTE COIN. On this step, one character will always be wrong somewhere and it will not progress past this step, does not display number of left chute coins on the bottom line, and will not exit attract mode by way of slam switch, you have to cycle power.

I have a Ni-Wumpf driver and a Swemmer MPU purchased from K's, am using the 40-pin IDE cable between the two (which adds ground) and driver is grounded to back box ground lug. Transformer ground mods have been done. Power supply is receiving ~12.35v and putting out 5v.

Please help!

Right up until you said "Swemmer MPU", I was going to say your 5101 is suspect. But I don't know what that board uses for memory, so I can't really say.

You might try bypassing the audits. Press the diagnostic button. Press the "start game" button. This normally takes you directly to lamp test (IIRC), skipping the audits.

O. I see that it uses the 5101 like the OEM board.
I'm back to suggesting that your 5101 is suspect.

Thanks, Chris. I'll give it a check.

OT: I notice you giving a lot of helpful, knowledgable advice in all the Gottlieb threads I read. Super thanks for all the help you've given! I had my fingers crossed this thread would cross your browser.. I've read everything Gottlieb on pinwiki and have consumed many of the other pages on there too, frequently returning to it as well (most often for the "pesky game abbreviations" page). Go Blues! (MO Native)
