You may have hinted at part of the answer to your own question.... Why would you even consider any machine where you already know that the theme "doesn't interest me" or "interests me even less". Simply cross those off your list. As for JP and Shadow being similiar, most people will say that they are vvvveeerrrryyyyyy different.

Suggestion: Refer to the link at the top of this page called "TOP 100" and start at #1 and work yiour way down and then see if any of them ring a bell. New machines may be easier for you to get in AU, but see what is available locally.

As always, narrow your list and then try playing a few titles that seem to 'feel right' locally and then buy the one you like. Yes, you'll get LOTS of personal opinions here on the Forum, it's really about what YOU like.
