All:

My 18 year old son is heading out west for spring break. Was going to rent skis. Then we thought about just having him buy some skis since he goes almost every year and probably would do it more if he didn't have to rent every time.

Thoughts on the best options to get gear? We already missed the ski show this past October. Some ideas I thought about....

1) Let him use my skis and just buy some boots
2) Head out west and just demo stuff and hopefully he can find something at the end of the season at a good price
3) Look for a shop around the Chicago area (are there any that still sell downhill ski gear anymore?

Any ideas....or maybe you have something that you may want to sell?!

The ski show in October (Schaumburg)has great deals on last year's models.

I think boots are very important and have Tecnica they have plug in for heat to mold to feet. If the boots hurt your feet its misery. One reason my sister's family rents skis out west but brings there own boots.

If you don't ski a lot I would rent skis, they keep getting better and are expensive. Check into the ski show next year. It was the same weekend as the expo this year.

In my opinion, I think the preciousnpsotwra auggestion if just getting boots is a good idea. Spend the money and get ones that feel great. Agree. I’ll fitting boots will make for a very poor apres ski!! Make sure the bindings are set for his ski level of course. I know around me there are a couple small shops that dedicate to skiing needs. I am sure that is also the case by you. Read some reviews of the shops and pick a good one and establish a relationship with them. Have fun
