YES!! going to listen to this right now!!!

    #352 5 years ago

I’m looking forward to a future episode with Kaneda as a background laugh track!

Hilarious. I was on your side by the way on the bobblehead bet.

    #353 5 years ago

In his dreams he would ever be allowed back on the show

Would just be one constant beep

    #354 5 years ago

So I’ve never used the google number generator thing, but when you asked it for a number to pick the winner of your pinburgh contest you said “between zero and two”. In that phrasing, are zero and two viable options, or would it always be one? Shouldn’t you have said between zero and three? Because the only number ‘between’ zero and two *is* one.

    #355 5 years ago

    Nope
    Google logic is weird
it will never pick the first number (well it never has anyway), so it will never pick zero. And even if it doesn't its not a valid option so we would just redraw.

and it will include the last number.
Just to prove it screenshot attached

Just took a 10 hour drive to ARK to pick up a game and listened to your podcasts all the way. You guys are great and your interview and commentary was spot on. You now have a new fan appears I have several episodes to catch up on. Thanks and keep up the great work. Was hoping you would have asked about the direction and timing of the 4th wall on Deadpool but the interview made me want the game even sooner. You guys are the BOOM. Thanks.

Good question. We might have someone on soon that could answer that for you. If you have anymore deadpool questions feel free to ask!

So Ryan, why the full on Kaneda ban?

    #366 5 years ago

Fantastic interview with Tanio. His background is a perfect fit for this title. Without so many restrictions Stern was able to stretch their wings and approach animations in a new way. The graphic design team's effort blew me away. So naturally your interview with the Software guy was pertinent and timely. Now I just need to hunt down and play some Deadpool. Thanks for the excitement guys!

So Ryan, why the full on ****** ban?

    Here is 1 reason

In the last 18 or so weeks we have interviewed

    Tanio Klyce
    Scott Danesi
    Dennis Nordman
    Ben Heck
Colin MacAlpine (2017 Pinburgh winner, didn't wear a our shirt like Keith did so fell short this year)
    Joe Kaminkow
Jimmy Nails (owner of Australia's best pinball arcade) and Jason Lambert (#2 in Australia and running the biggest tournaments in the southern hemisphere)
    Gabe from Pintastic
    Josh Kugler
    Josh Sharpe
    Jerry Thomson
    Keith Elwin
    Michael Bowyer (Australian Stern Distro)
    Zombie Yeti
    Keith Johnson
    David Van Es
    Christopher Franchi
    Zach Sharpe

Please tell me what he could possibly add to our show. He does his thing, multiple times a week. We do ours.

I would love to keep our thread ***** free out of respect for Pinside rules. So if you want to make a comment about him in the future you can PM me.

    Thanks

I know you guys love stupid teasers for interviews. This was a big one.

    Where is #58?

    #374 5 years ago

Released same time every week. Monday morning/afternoon US time.
    So not out yet.

The post above was a teaser designed to get people guessing but as you can see. Total fail!

    Here is a another clue.

This guy has been heavily involved on the team for 5 pinball machines in the last 5 years. One unreleased/unannounced

    #375 5 years ago

Ahhh. Forgot about release schedule etc. I’m cutting the grass today and need content.

    No idea on the guest.

Played Deadpool yesterday. I liked it so much that I brought it home from the launch party. It’s fantastic! IMO, if it’s this fun at launch, it can only get better with Stern’s new commitments to code etc.

There was a Maiden right next to it and I must say I enjoyed the DP more on first impression. Maiden, however, is a spectacle to behold. So much is there for a Pro model. Stern is killing it this year.

Awesome will give this a listen later at work.

"came last and got 3 strikes" -- apparently you were doing progressive strikes and not Keefer's 0-1-1-2 variant.

    Progressive = 0-1-2-3, Fair Strikes/Keefer Strikes = 0-1-1-2

    #380 5 years ago

Nope. Martin won 4 of his fist 5 games. So he was on 1 point.

Don't stress, I ran it right

    #381 5 years ago

Another Great show guys. Insightful questions and a great interview. George is clearly excited by his work justifiably and I look forward to seeing what he and his team have in store for the final product. LE on order and the record player is all set with a new needle. With Headtohead and SDTM I have a perfect balance of pinball content. Thanks for what you do!

Ok, so other than martin’s bitterness, how did you like that variation on the knockout format?

I love it. Only played in 0011 tournament once before but it seemed to drag on for a while at the end.

I am the one that got Matchplay to add it as a format because the scoring totally didn't work when you modified too many strikes.

It should be named 'don't come last'

Here is the comp - https://matchplay.events/live/xr696

    #384 5 years ago

Can you please quit making Kaneda cry? Poor guy is on TILT bad.

    #385 5 years ago
    Quoted from epthegeek:

    Progressive = 0-1-2-3, Fair Strikes/Keefer Strikes = 0-1-1-2

What’s the advantages of these formats over the standard 0-0-1-1?

Example - you are a new player, you come along to experience a Comp, play some pinball - and lose all your games in a row. Which is likely to happen.

    Normal 3 strikes - 3 loses, you’re done.

    Progressive with 5 strikes - 2 games, you’re done.

Fair strikes with 5 strikes (this is what Ryan ran I believe) - 3 games, you’re done.

So nothing gets a new player any more games than the normal format, if they continually get last. If they come say 4-3-4 with fair strikes, they’d still get 4 games. 3-3-3-4 they’d get one extra game.

Looking at the results on Matchplay, it was all finished in 8 rounds (with 22 players)

Is the idea to finish the tournament quicker so everyone can go home earlier?

Always up for a change up - just trying to see what the advantages are of changing.

IMO is more about the groups of 3
I think the scoring for 3 player is 001
There is no advantage for coming first. You could be in the final round in round 8 and not come first once.
012 I think puts a lot more pressure for you to perform
And yes, I think the format has a better 'curve' to wrap up the comp quicker once most of the people are out compared to 0123. I don't want to to hang around forever for 2 people.

Here is a simulation for 100 people doing 5 strikes with 0112

**** PLAYERS PER ROUND, SUMMARY AFTER RUN 10000 ****

    round 1: 100.000000
    round 2: 100.000000
    round 3: 100.000000
    round 4: 89.059097
    round 5: 64.214996
    round 6: 38.139198
    round 7: 19.949301
    round 8: 9.355600
    round 9: 4.278900
    round 10: 1.651700
    round 11: 0.038800

    -----------------------

Here is a simulation for 100 people doing 5 strikes with 0123

**** PLAYERS PER ROUND, SUMMARY AFTER RUN 10000 ****

    round 1: 100.000000
    round 2: 100.000000
    round 3: 81.257401
    round 4: 50.575001
    round 5: 26.266199
    round 6: 12.355300
    round 7: 5.480800
    round 8: 2.745200
    round 9: 0.768000
    round 10: 0.163000
    round 11: 0.024800
    round 12: 0.001800

    ----------------------------

    Can you see the difference?
At half way on the 0123 you only have 26 people left.
With 0112 you have an average of 64 people left

What about a simulation for the normal 3 strikes 0-0-1-1. What’s that come out at?

    My guess - 16-18 rounds.

    Worse. 3/100ths of a human

No idea on the 0011 break down. I am just using the program that Keith Johnson coded up on tilt forums.
I am guessing 0011 would have a similar end round average with 3 strikes, not 5.

Thank you!! He was quite candid with his responses which made it great.

    #391 5 years ago
    Quoted from rotordave:

What’s the advantages of these formats over the standard 0-0-1-1?

    Here's the original post: http://tiltforums.com/t/thoughts-on-group-knockout-strikes-format-w-3-strikes-per-group/2166/7?u=keefer

Combined with what appears to be the start of progressive strikes here: http://tiltforums.com/t/4-player-vs-3-player-groups-are-there-disadvantages-advantages/3172?u=keefer

The main goal was to even out any "unfairness" in doling out strikes. As the second (earlier) thread mentions, there is EV differences between 3 and 4 player groups in some scoring systems. My idea was to make it as fair as possible without getting too silly.

0112/012/02 has the advantage of there being the same number of strikes/person given out in every group (1), every winner always gets 0, every loser always gets 2, and everyone else gets 1. The 1 to 2 AND 3 might seem a little weird, but is it weirder than 0011? I'd argue not.

The only thing 0112 doesn't do is differentiate between p2 and p3 in 4 player groups, but I'll take the ease of understanding the whole system any day.

I also far prefer the smoothing of 0112 vs the effective proposal I made originally of 0022.

    Quoted from rotordave:

What about a simulation for the normal 3 strikes 0-0-1-1. What’s that come out at?

This shouldn't be too hard to do.

    Edit to add:

    Nope, it wasn't.

    100 players, 3 strikes, 0011 001 01

**** PLAYERS PER ROUND, SUMMARY AFTER RUN 10000 ****

    Thanks for the breakdown.

I agree - 3 player games in the 0-0-1-1 are a pain. I guess the good part is there generally aren’t too many of them, well at least not in my 30-40 person monthly 3 strikes.

    Quoted from rotordave:

    My guess - 16-18 rounds.

    Quoted from pinball_keefer:

    round 17: 0.000200

    Fair guess, eh?

I’ll give a 5 strikes Fair Strikes a go at one of our upcoming Auckland comps, and report back. Might be a couple of months before it gets scheduled in ...

How does TGP vary between these 3 examples?

This topic came up in a local forum and people wanted to know how it impacted tourney value also?

    #394 5 years ago

They are the same really. Just depends on how many rounds It goes for.
10 rounds have 72 percent tpg. 8 gave 52 but there was a bunch of rounds that where 3 players.
So over in about 3.5 to 4 hours with the on site machines not setup too hard.

The aim for just to try and keep more people in for longer. I need to feed the machines as it's $2 a play here in Melbourne. So with $10 entry it works out pretty much perfect with this format.

Oh yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask. Are the pins on 5 ball in Melbourne like they are elsewhere in Aussie?

    Quoted from FalconPunch:

Here is a simulation for 100 people doing 5 strikes with 0112

**** PLAYERS PER ROUND, SUMMARY AFTER RUN 10000 ****

    round 1: 100.000000
    round 2: 100.000000
    round 3: 100.000000
    round 4: 89.059097
    round 5: 64.214996
    round 6: 38.139198
    round 7: 19.949301
    round 8: 9.355600
    round 9: 4.278900
    round 10: 1.651700
    round 11: 0.038800

this seems like the best of all worlds. Keeps more people in for a few more rounds but then makes sure it does not drag on forever.

Great interview, one thing I noticed do Stern really have 98% Of the market?

    If spooky make 500 games
    JJP. 2000 games
    Chicago gaming 2000 games
    American pinball 500 Games
    Etc etc

    #398 5 years ago

Lol no. They made around 10k games last year based on ipsnd info. That's about 66%.

Assuming your numbers are fair, they'd have to make about 245k games.

Looks like Georges 20 year old game MB might still out sell the current Stern

yeah, I am not sure why they continue to hold on to that 98% market share number. It is obviously way off in the current world.
