Surprise, just when I thought i was safe.

Now I can add appendix removal to my list of surgeries. Also, no Long Beach comic con.

Next year I hope. Appendix...

I had a ruptured appendix about 10 years ago. I didn't get the pain in the side until it was too late it seems. I just felt like I had really bad flu like symptoms until the pain happened.. then hospital. Now I have a huge scar. I know have a new appreciation for what "pain" feels like.
You will be fine. Best wishes!

#13 5 years ago

Good luck, my thoughts are with you.

#14 5 years ago

Appendectomies are a piece of cake these days with laparoscopic surgery, you will be home the same or next day with almost no scarring.

#15 5 years ago

Life is a journey, but seems like you got directed toward the tougher path my friend.

Good things to come. Smiles and deep breathes, this too shall pass.

#16 5 years ago

Best of luck.....hopefully, there are no more surgeries after this

#17 5 years ago

Never played pinball as well as I did before they took out my appendix. I’m sure that won’t happen to you though!

#18 5 years ago

Modern medicine has made this procedure a breeze. You will be fine. All the best for a speedy recovery. God Bless!

You know, if you ask for it back, I'm pretty sure they have to return your appendix post-surgery!

Something to think about.

Here is my appendix / pinball related story (to hopefully cheer you up Azmodeus).

A little over two years ago, the day of my travel from Canada to Seattle for the North West pinball show, I felt really sick. Half way through the short flight I had horrible pain in my stomach and I was doubled over in my seat. I figured it was simply what you got the day after you ate at A&W (i.e. food poisoning). I subsequently threw up on the airplane, on the tarmac outside of the plane, in the airport, on the way from the airport, on my friend's lawn (sorry Todd), and at my friend's house. Went to bed early that night still feeling crappy.

The next day I felt a bit better and so I went to the show for the next few days. Didn't feel great but good enough to try to have a good time for the next few days.

Back at home, about 1 week after the first incident, I felt well enough to play hockey. After the game I started to go downhill. I couldn't get warm (even after a hot bath), and would shake violently in bed. My wife finally said I should get checked out. Next day I went to my doctor and he sent me for an ultrasound. They then immediately sent me to the hospital. My appendix had ruptured (likely on the first night in Seattle, when the pain finally subsided). The reason that I wasn't worse, and why I was still alive was because when the appendix ruptured and released all the shit into by body (causing an infection), my body built an inflammation around the infection (so I never became septic). The surgeon said he did not want to remove the appendix because there was such a big infection / inflammation mass, it was too risky, and because they now treat appendicitis with antibiotics, not removal. I didn't know any better and so that was what we did.

Spent a week in hospital getting treated with all sorts of antibiotics. Then they sent me home. I didn't feel 100% but I was ok.

Two weeks later I started getting a fever again. I went back to the same hospital and they sent me home again that night unsure of what was wrong.

The next day I felt horrible and I went to a different hospital. Spent 8 hours in an ER room waiting to see a doctor. I was in worse agony than the first time. Finally saw a new surgeon. He said that my appendix had re-ruptured, and, on top of that, I had c-dif (another separate really bad infection from being in the first hospital and from being treated with so many antibiotics). The new surgeon asked me if I wanted him to take my appendix out. I told him that the first surgeon didn't want to take it out because it was too infected and inflamed. The new surgeon said that THAT was precisely WHY he would have taken it out. He also said that this new way of treating appendicitis (not removing and only treating with antibiotics) results in 1/3 of the cases failing outright, 1/3 of the cases failing within a few weeks (like me and it re-rupturing a few weeks later) and 1/3 of the cases failing at some point down the road. Moreover, the previous hospital did too many CT scans of me (3) in a short period of time, I shouldn't have any more. So, he asked again, did I want to have it taken out? I sure did. The surgeon was extremely knowledgeable and competent. Took it out, infection and inflammation and all, laproscopically.

I then had to take a super toxic antibiotic to treat the c-dif for 2 weeks. This made me so sick I could not eat anything the whole time I was on the drug. I would try a bit of food an immediately feel nauseous.

End result? 3 small incision scars that you can barely see. 35 pounds of weight loss in 6 weeks. 3 CT scans in 3 weeks. No more appendix. No more c-dif.

And no more A&W.

But today I am back to full health (and I put all the weight back on, plus a bit more).

Morals of the story: If you want to lose weight, get your appendix to rupture. If you have horrible pains in your stomach, go to the hospital. If you have appendicitis, have them take it out.

Hope you are doing well Azmodeous! You have had a rough go of it lately. Lets hope this is just a small set back. My thoughts and prayers are with you!

Short story about my ex-appendix:

I have been suffering for about 20 years from colitis ulcerosa. When the stomach pains started last 1st of May, I was sure it was again just my colitis ulcerosa being active. As the pain did not go away, I called to Helsinki's medical service number and asked for advice. They told me that there is some terrible flu going on in Helsinki which brings very hard stomach pains to people and they told me just to wait and see until the flu goes away. Well, I waited a day, but as I got fever and felt much worse than usual with the stomach pain, I went to the doctor at night and they dispatched me to another hospital where they took some MRI:s (I believe that was what the machine was taking as pictures) and they noticed that my appendix had ruptured. So after ca. 8 hours wait I went into the surgery and came back without the appendix. Had to eat antibiotics for a while. The doctor told me that my appendix had been double the size of a normal one, so they had to make a cut to remove it. The scar is about 15 cm:s and it is vertical instead of horizontal. After the removal of the appendix I have noticed that my stomach pains from colitis ulcerosa are not nearly as bad as they were before and the doctor told that the appendix had probably made the pains worse. Goodbye appendix - I am not missing you

Thank you for the stories. I did not have any idea what was going on. My stomache just hurt. But my blood pressure was staying very high. My fiancée called an ambulance.

The appendix had not yet burst. One time when they were trying to find my vein for an IV. They got it on the 4th try. Honestly that is one of my peeves about the hospital. They have trouble with my veins. Just getting a shot or drawing blood is no problem.

But the IV that is another story. That needle rooting around.

I should have named my cat rogain!

But overall this appendix removal is pretty routine today. I played a few games of pinball yesterday even though it hurt a bit!

Now I just have to chill for a week. Take care my friends!

Peter Lalor lost an arm at Eureka Stockade and still kept fighting.

If you believe in something strongly enough no obstacle is too difficult to surmount.

It's all about mindset.

Azmodeus has the right one - perspective and determination to overcome adversity regardless.

Everyone else is sharing, so I will too -- but not an appendix surgery story, just a generic surgery story - and how it lead to pinball!

First, I analyze EVERYTHING before spending a penny. I knew I wanted to buy a pin, but I always researched everything to death, and then spend weeks going back and forth with myself on whether I should spend the money or not. We all know pins don't last weeks, so I had never bought one.

So anyway, early last year I had to have surgery on my ankle -- I had a tendon that was ready to rupture. Not life threatening like an appendix, but it made walking difficult. The surgery was no big deal - but I had to be off my feet for a few weeks and on pain meds for the first week. I was told I should take the pain pills every few hours, even if it didn't hurt -- because if I stopped, the pills wouldn't be able to stop the pain anymore. So I did. And was pretty loopy in general on them (hated it).

The day after the surgery, I was on Pinside and saw a T2 on sale for $1900, and they were willing to ship. It was in decent shape considering the age - had some playfield wear, but everything worked. It was in NY, so would have to be shipped to me. I was super excited and told my wife (who was home, taking care of me) and, all drugged up, said, "Should I buy it?" She said, "Sure, go ahead." And I literally bought the machine about 5 minutes after it was posted, without any thinking at all, thanks to the pain pills. In hindsight, I probably should've waited for a local one because the $400 shipping ate into the good deal, but since I was high, I didn't analyze it at all. And I don't regret it as it's helped me learn a lot (although I have a LONG way to go)..

If not for the surgery, I still might not have a pin to call my own because I was too scared to pull the trigger on anything. Now I have 3.
