Quoted from Colsond3:

Cab is pretty damn good...bright colors. A couple dings but nothing major. PF and plastics are actually cleaning up nice.

Hey everyone! I am a member of the club now as well having picked up this particular ball from Colson when he got his old Haunted House back. The MPU had battery damage which I neutralized and replaced a bunch of components and the machine is up and running again. Right now going through a variety of electrical and mechanical problems but the list is getting smaller by the day.

So far the major issue left is the credit display and lower playfield display the upper segments are locked on. The problem appears to be on the MPU board as I can swap the lower display for one of the score displays and the problem stays with location. I'm hoping to narrow it down further this weekend by comparing the IC's on this board related to display control with another System 80 board Colson is bring up this weekend.

Quoted from MarAlb:

The segments from the playfield display and credit display are controlled bij Z23 (7448) on the MPU board (Group C segments). That one can be defective. Also take a look for a loose wire or a bad contact at the J2 connector on the MPU board.

Thank you, I'll focus on that particular location.

Quoted from Nez02:

Hey guys. I believe I’m missing the aluminum trim around my backglass can anyone confirm for me?[quoted image]

Confirmed- Just looked at one at a show and they had a vendor who had the trim which I purchased new for $15

Look a few posts up you can see the new trim on mine.

#767 4 years ago
Quoted from Nez02:

I’m guessing the trim goes on the two sides and top?

Yes

No chip yet, seller just shipped yesterday!

I was able to change out a bad lamp transistor, flipper coil, rebuilt another flipper, new popper coil and its control board. It is really coming along! I may socket the Z23 location this weekend when I change out the four bridge rectifiers. I still need to source out the large caps for the power supply.

My buddy Colson showed up with a Spiderman Sys80 board that doesn't look fixable so I desoldered the Z23 chip and moved it to HH.

Displays work perfect now

Quoted from radial_head:

Would it be possible to put the plastic OVER this? have this on the bottom and then have the plastic on top of it? Not a fan of the metal aesthetically, but does seem practical.

Actually that was my plan, to print out a scan and put mylar over it. Since it isn't backlit it would look fine.

After I polished it, I'm inclined to leave it as is though. Just a personal preference.

The rest of the trim was polished too and I drilled a hole on the far right location and installed a spacer and longer machine screw. Didn't like the end of the piece just hanging over the post near target #5 when it could be secure.

Quoted from 20eyes:

Looks good. I am a bad influence apparently. I was motivated to make that mostly by simply not having a plastic for that spot between 2 machines. That and I run a laser at work every day so the light bulb went on one day...

Here is the scanned images I was playing with.. The upper one has had some corrections done in Photoshop. I was going to print it out and glue to the steel piece and seal.

Quoted from radial_head:

Additionally, how have those metal "secret passage protectors" been working out?

Pretty darn awesome. I was playing last week and must have got the ball just right and I could hear it bounce off, rang like a bell.

I just laughed maniacally.

Whats everyone's thoughts on this one. Seems kind priced higher, I know it has the pascal board with speech and upgraded sound and LED's. Looking at the pictures, cabinet has some scuffs and marks typical from a game of this age. Playfield has has some normal wear but I don't see anything too bad. I am possibly considering buying a HH and this is the closest to me in location. I have seen prices anywhere from $1,900-$2,500. This one is definitely on the higher end and it is listed as firm. Does the pascal board also mean it has multi ball? I don't know much about it. https://pinside.com/pinball/market/classifieds/ad/91412

No, multiball requires a hardware change (extra trough mech and switch) as well as the software.

Quoted from fatality83:

My new haunted house has a slight GI issue with the lights in the attic. It has all the appropriate ground mods done and has a Pascal board in it. The front GI light that is in between the two upper flippers comes on and off like it should, but it is the only light (in the attic) lighting up. All other GI seems to work as it should. From what I am seeing, the attic pop bumper and lights behind the attic drops targets are not coming on at all. I of course tried switch pop bumper lights just to make sure they were not bad and the pop bumper light works in a different pop bumper so I know its not the bulb. After looking at the manual I see there is two connectors that appear to supply the power to the upstairs playfield GI. A9p6 and A9p5. I was able to find one of these connectors under the playfield in about the center of the bottom of the main playfield and made sure it was good and tight. I can't seem to find the other connector however. Any ideas where I can find it? Also how hard is it to take the attic playfield off? I would like to check under it to see if there is any connectors under there that may of came loose. I have attached a video of what it is doing in attract mode (notice how the pop bumper and rear GI on the upper playfield are not coming on at all) Thanks [quoted image]

Disconnect the front of the ramp (2 fasteners) and there is two hex fasteners on either side of "the attic" and it flips right up.

Quoted from Nihonmasa:

I've sold my bumper issues, now onto the last one! Lower playfield lighting !
I blew some LEDs and checked the voltage: reads 25VDC/12VAC
Is this normal?
Alternate question: is there a trick to activate the multiball with the Janin board? It's not in the lost of Roms when pressing test at the beginning.

1) Yes, you have to use 313 bulbs which operate at 28 volts.

2) Multiball only will work if the machine is modified with a multiball trough and appropriate ROM.

#854 4 years ago
Quoted from Nihonmasa:

Thanks, for the Rom I thought it was included in the janin board.
Had no idea for the trough, will check that

Yes to convert to multi-ball you need a trough that holds more than one ball and the wiring.

Quoted from radial_head:

Yes, the multiball feature is quite a bit of work. It's cool but you really need to have all your resourced locked in and ready before you consider doing it.

ebay.com link » Gottlieb System 80 Pinball 7 Digit Displays From Haunted House Untested Lotof 4

Haunted House has 6 digit displays, not 7.

#873 4 years ago
Quoted from radial_head:

I figured it was a typo.

HH has 5 not 4 displays that size, it was what tweaked my interest in the ad. I suspect they are 6, not 7 digit units.

#875 4 years ago
Quoted from radial_head:

Which is also odd to me. Again, the covers are pretty rare to see so I was mostly posting for those. I will say one thing that strikes me as odd is that the seller says they came out of a HH, so there's a chance they're correct. Anyway. Just figured I'd pass it along.

I have a friend who is looking into making new covers for the gottlieb displays.

You can manually trigger sounds by grounding the various input line pins

Rolled the dice and purchased these, 4 very nice green filters and 4 working 7 digit displays

One was a little dim, hit it with 6.3 volts for 4 minutes and its daisy fresh again.

So these are not HH displays, but they have the filters?

They are not 6 digit displays but have green, not blue filters.

#905 4 years ago
Quoted from radial_head:

Well hey, at least you got four green covers!
Do the Pascal PI-80 boards allow for 7 digit connectors to be used without modification or do you need to modify the boards/connectors too?

I have 4 operating spares for my Alien Star I just finished rebuilding a display on! I was looking at the purchase as a whole to have spares or at worst have glass and I.C. that could be scavenged.

Quoted from radial_head:

I don't believe that the multi ball modifications requires a 7 digit display, no. But I DO know that if you want 7 digit displays with the original board, it's so much work that it is absolutely not worth it.

It really isn't that hard, there is a write on the board here how to do.

Quoted from jetmechinnc:

I hope you can figure it out. Dumb question, but are there credits on the game? I’m new as well to the solid state Gottlieb world, but I’ve read the 1980s games don’t have free play unless you jumper wires. Might just need to put in a quarter?

In the door settings just adjust the score based award low like 50k to award a credit. Works great.

#941 3 years ago
Quoted from Jasenwm:

Someone come and fix my haunted house I'll pay you $$$$$ it's driving me crazy!!!

If I was not up to my eyeballs in projects right now I'd help! Whats going on?

#945 3 years ago
Quoted from Mad_Dog_Coin_Op:

The slam switch should be closed on old Gottliebs. Tone it out with your Multimeter and see if it really is closed. The problem child is usually the one on the door. Jumper it if you have to. Also make sure there is a ball in the ball trough.

Would not be booting I think.

#947 3 years ago
Quoted from Mad_Dog_Coin_Op:

It will boot but the displays usually light up with all ones or zeros.

Ah yes, thanks for jingling my memory. Usually zeros.

On mine I bypass the switch, on 80B on the MPU board.

#962 3 years ago
Quoted from Jasenwm:

I was thinking that about the ball trough. I closed it with my finger and it didn't change anything? The mpu is new no damage. I'm going to repin the connectors like you suggested and see what happens

Please adjust so it is closed when a ball is in place while booting.

Fix before proceeding.

#967 3 years ago
Quoted from Jasenwm:

I emailed the company and asked what that messege ment. This is the reply I received from them.
''Normally that messege is indicating that the Slam switch has been detected on the game. It will come up at game start, because it was ignoring the switch until then. Let's start with looking at the Slam circuity for the game, on the front door, and the ball roll tilt.''
I emailed back telling him more about the issue but I'm confused why the Slam switch is still an issue because I bought this board because it states the board will disable and ignore the slam switch common issues?

Make sure you keep the old board, odds are nothing wrong with it.

I might be free this weekend if you need it looked at for a few bucks, live down by the casinos.

#976 3 years ago
Quoted from Jasenwm:

The game worked fine when I played at the sellers house, no I haven't tested the driver board. Yeah I'm in for the new harness let me know.

I'd stop throwing money at it for the moment and get a meter and trace out the slam switch wiring. Continuity testing would go a long way towards solving your problem.

Quoted from radial_head:

Finally got my Haunted House put back together. epeabs was kind enough to help me with some cleaning and polishing and refinishing of some topside metal parts. When everything came back together, a few things happened.
1.) the displays are all wonky. Player 2 is consistently on, all segments, all the time. Players 3, 4, and the bonus display strobe gently with care and artistry

Swap the display- If the problem follows the display the problem is the display. If it stays in the location, problem is on the MPU.

I have seen a number of Sys 80 displays pulse, some greater and some lesser. Rebuilding the A2 power supply with fresh caps and diodes usually helps as does swapping out main caps in the lower cabinet.

I have a really nice HH for sale in a few weeks once I burn through a few other projects in the queue. Extremely nice cab and playfield, some new boards. Has sound issues to be addressed and general look over to make sure 100%
