I have a haunted house that has a weak pop up coil, the one that goes from the basement to the playfield. It has a #A-21741 coil there now. Is that the right one? I cant find it in the replacement parts for the Haunted House. Thanks.

The one in my area at "playland not at the beach" has the same issue, I would like to know as well so I can relay info and hopefully they can fix it, what a great game! Hope someone helps you out, sorry I have no info.

It may not necessarily be the coil that's the problem; if the lower playfield gets out of alignment with the main playfield, then the ball won't quite make it back up most of the time. Try checking that before replacing the coil.

playfield gets out of alignment

+1, and check that coil sleeve also.

Also, A-21741 is the correct coil. It's on page 54 of my manual.

I found a link to a mod that can be done to the driver board and it said to use coil #A-4893. I'll check the alignment and watch it when its trying to knock the pinball up. Thanks guys.

Dusting off an old thread here...

I had a pinball repairman out working on my machines, and he was looking at that basement VUK on my Haunted House, and he wants to replace the stock coil with a stronger coil. Is the A-4893 a stronger coil? Has anyone else tried upgrading that coil?

Has there been an update regarding the vertical up-kick coil? I'm having a related problem as the coil isn't firing when the ball rests in the hole. The machine makes a sound, registering that the ball has entered the vertical up-kick, but the coil isn't firing.

I've replaced the stock coil with a A-4893 and a Ni-Wumphf driver board and it's still not shooting the ball up.

Looks like I'm taking more stuff apart tonight.

I had a problem but I had to align the metal slot on the bottom playfield that the tube fits into. You can't just adjust the tube cause it would just go back to where it was. Now it works like a cannon. It's all about adjusting that slot!

I'd be looking at the A1J4 to A3J1 connector as the problem of the coil not being strong enough or as was stated, the tube is not alligned properly. Or maybe the fuse is blown if there appears to be no power to the upkicker coil at all.

The original A-21741 is 2.5 ohms. The A-4893 coil is a little stronger at 2.1 ohms. The only coil you can use that's stronger than the A-4893 would be a A-20095 super flipper at 1.55 ohms on the power side of the coil. The ball should come up like a rocket using the super flipper coil if everything else is working properly.

I did a mod using this coil for the upkicker on BH and added an EOS switch to make the coil strength adjustable. It also makes it so the coil shouldn't burn up should the driver board lose the 5VDC or ground and lock all coils on slowly. I planned to do this mod on HH too (when I had the time) and document it for PinWiki as well.

There is a systemic problem with Haunted House and Black Hole VUK (vertical up kicker) design that is corrected by the addition of a Gottlieb Pop Bumper Driver board into the circuit.

Grab a copy of http://arcadecontrols.com/files/Manuals/Black%20Hole%20-%20Haunted%20House%20Repair%20Guide.pdf and look pages 37 and 38. If you do not have that modification, find an old PBDB and rework it.

While youre at it look at the System 80 pinwili and make sure you have all your ground mods done and no longer are using your original orange cap to make the machine mostly bullet proof.
