JD - rules.pdf (PDF preview)
#1 5 years ago

How would one go about a new code for JD? The game has so much to offer but needs deeper rules. It needs combo multipliers like shadow has.
Is it possible to take sounds and call outs frkm the super game mode and write them into an updated rule set?

I love the game but I agree. Needs new code. A few shots are usefull in a mode. Combo multipliers would be awesome.

So if you go to the judge dredd club the first or second page has a link to new code on proc and the story behind it. It's apparently not ready for primetime but if you can code he was offering up the source info

Here's a link to the github repo for the source code.
https://github.com/preble/JD-pyprocgame

That was the first game I wrote for the P-ROC. It started out as a proof of concept and example game for other people developing P-ROC projects, but it turned into a really fun game. I can make the A/V assets available again if anybody wants them.

So Gerry - when I read your post from a long time ago I was like How is everybody not buying this and using it but then could only find a few complaints but that's the internet... Would you buy the Proc for this code if you were me... Money is not the factor just is it fun or more off proof of concept. Also could you link to the exact thing I need to purchase, I just was not perfectly clear on what to purchase but think I understand. Thanks for what you do / DID.

If I still had a JD, it'd be a no-brainer for me to run the new code. I like it better than the original rules. The media pack also has new sound effects, music, and dots (developed mostly by volunteers in the community... both professionals and hobbyists). It doesn't rival a commercial game release in terms of polish (dots probably need the most work), but it's a fun playing game.

The main thing holding it back is that it isn't a complete plug-and-play product. If you have the knowledge to put it together yourself, you'd need a WPC P-ROC (https://www.multimorphic.com/store/circuit-boards/p-roc/), some sort of mini-computer, and a connection from the computer to your WPC audio board (or separate/external speakers). To be make the offering more compete, it also could use a game-selector menu at bootup to choose between the original code via pinmame or the new/custom code, just like how BoP2 allows a similar choice at startup. Implementing that menu wouldn't be more than a days worth of work for a programmer, but it's something that isn't already done for JD. If somebody took over the logistics side of this, I imagine they'd sell a complete kit for $800-$1000. If you did it yourself, you could probably get it done for about $500.

Is there a file describing the changes made?

#8 5 years ago

I should have a copy of that in a wiki backup. I'll look.

A team and a Kickstarter could maybe get this to a finished product.
