I owned it for a couple years, and never got close. The best I ever did in Rescue was 3 letters. It is insanely hard to finish. 3 letters sounds like half way, but it isn't. No matter how well I played, I couldn't do it.

Quoted from RandyV:

I think this is one WOZ' flaws honestly. The game is so deep and there is so much there that getting anywhere close to SOTR requires a ridiculous amount of time -- unless you are a really top, top player. Maybe that was the intent, but I am getting to the point where the game is losing some favor because the progression is too steep and takes forever.
Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing achievement and I am one of those "play better" people, but when you hit a wall and stall out making reasonable progress game after game after game - it starts to collect dust.

This is a double edged sword. An easy to complete game doesn't last long in a home environment.

Quoted from MK6PIN:

I've beaten the Witch 3 times in about 3 years.

And I have to say, that was a GREAT mini-wizard mode. Such a good job building up the tension.

The same here.
I don't understand the progress of the game, either how to collect a single diamond.
Is there a special animation when you collect one diamond?

The diamonds are for completion of something major in the game.
The emeralds are for smaller things, however they lead to a diamond.

In the status screens it will show you that collecting the 4 emeralds leads you to melt the witch. Melting the witch earns a diamond. I don't recall all of the things that give you a diamond. Munchkin Multiball, Haunted Multiball, finishing Rescue, finishing Emerald City multiball, melting the witch, getting all the way to the last crystal ball mode... All lofty goals. And once you get them all, you go into SOTR.
