Hey everyone, hope you're having a good day.

I'm less than a month into pinball ownership and have been fixing up a Harlem I picked up in great condition, but last night while I was playing, the displays went dark and GI stayed on, and the game stopped functioning. Everything seems to be getting power, but upon boot, the MPU gives 2 flashes.

From my searches of the forum, I see people suggesting that this points to a bad U8 or U12 chip or connection with one of them to the board. My question is, with no spare chips to swap in to test, what should my next steps of diagnosis be?

I've stuck a picture of the board in question on this post, from what I can tell there's little to no corrosion and a battery mod installed by a prior owner.

Thanks very much for your help!

5101 or replace with NV ram
Might need a new socket also

Lack of a 3rd flash is usually the U8 chip. That's a 5101 chip that can be replaced with an NV RAM. Remove the chip and carefully clean the leads. Inspect the socket and solder for previous battery damage. If you do replace the chip with a NV RAM remove the battery.

Just to check as many get confused as to what is a flicker or a flash:

Is it a "flicker" and one flash? (Check / Replace U7)
OR
a "flicker" and two flashes? (Check / Replace U8)

Thanks for everyone's help! After long shipping waits, I ended up going with what I thought was the safe choice and replacing U7, and replacing U8 with a 5101 nvram upgrade. Desoldered the battery but haven't removed it yet. Problem is, now I'm getting no flicker and no flashes, just a solid light on the MPU. Any suggestions?

That's a battery? Looks like a memory cap to me.

Did you rework the U8 socket? Pull the nvram and try to boot again.

You're probably right, sorry, I'm pretty new to the insides of a game. I pulled the nvram and turned it on and got the same result, solid light.
