Picked up a 1964 Bally “Happy Tour” recently and slowing bringing it back. Once working I’ll start on the clean up and possible cabinet repaint. So far so good. Get her to now start up a game. Flippers, pops, mushrooms and slings all working. Not sure yet on the advanced tour stuff yet.

Problem - at each ball drain or when a 50 point roll over is made - the game starts over - score resets and back to ball 1. Never goes to ball 2.

Have the schematics but having troubles finding the culprit here. Score motor switch needing adjustment or a stepper unit not functioning correctly?

#2 3 years ago

Just for starters, and nothing specific, have you cleaned all the steppers? That seems to fix many problems bringing an old game back to life.

#3 3 years ago

After reset, can the Score Motor run without resetting the game? You could try nudging one of the score motor cams forward to get the motor to run through a cycle as an experiment.

Hey guys! Thanks for the help. And Jethro you cant be missing this Ohio weather! Cleaning the steppers yes, still no improvements. If I nudge the score motor, it resets no matter what. In one of my past games, there was a scm switch that at certain pulses it worked, others it didn't...(like not resetting each cycle) don't know if that makes sense but that's why I was asking (i hate scm's!)

#5 3 years ago

And just for the record - what is this broken item? Bottom inside of cab (I said she was dirty!) Haven’t seen one Of these?? Cause of any issues? Don’t see it on the schematics but I’m not the sharpest on those.

That’s a cement resistor. Connects to the lock relay if I recall correctly. I replaced mine with a modern one with a heat sink.

Quoted from Nikrox2:

Although the Score Motor causes the problem, the real issue is likely elsewhere. I don't have a Happy Tour schematic but this is from Grand Tour which may be similar.
Grand Tour Start relay (resized).jpgGrand Tour Start relay (resized).jpg
If the Start Trip relay fires every time the Score Motor turns it's probably because a normally open switch elsewhere in the circuit is closed. You'll need to find the Start Trip (or maybe Reset?) relay in your schematic and find the other switches in the circuit that work with the Score Motor Switch. One of them may be stuck closed or shorted, or the device driving it may be active when it shouldn't be.

Beware that in this schematic the Start relay circuit is running at 120 Volts, including the Score Motor switch. Best poke around with the game unplugged.

For extra credit, upload your schematic to IPDB.org.

Hmm, upon closer inspection the Score Motor 1C-C switch in the schematic is normally closed so something else may be going on. What relay(s) fire when you start the Score Motor manually (using all the caution that 120 volts deserve)?

Here’s some quick photos of that area i think. And a close by area of the schematics that show all my culprits together. Ball return, 50 point, advance. Don’t know if these will help? (And yes I’ve sent some photos to there before on another old game. I need a Better camera!)

That resistor is shown in the top right corner of your third picture, just below “13-3”.

15ohm, 10W. I replaced mine ne with a 15ohm, 100w wirewound resistor built into an aluminum heat sink.

#10 3 years ago

If I manually rotate the scm - with points the score reels reset. With no points shown no action there. If there mushrooms are hit - when I manually rotate it only resets the 6 bank trip set. If I let one of my culprits hit, both the 6 bank and the 4 bank (for the mushrooms ) also resets.

So by manually rotating the scm it’s only resetting the 6 bank. So per that photo above - I see a Trip Bank Side switch. Should be open. Need to find it maybe?

Thanks! Was wondering. For my own info - what’s it for?

#12 3 years ago

Is this possibly the “trip side switch”? It’s on the side of the 6 bank unit. It’s closed. Well was. I (unplugged the game first!) then gapped it. It closes when the bank resets. So think that was it MarkG!
I can add points (manually), Hit the ball drain, any 50 point etc and no resetting!

It’s not advancing to the next ball. But took another giant step forward!

Ball count unit is in the head. Check that next- it might be seized up. (Edit: I think. I don’t have this title, but it’s in the head of all 3 of this vintage that I own)

I don’t really know what function that resistor serves.

#14 3 years ago

The schematic shows that the Trip Bank Side Switch connects a 30/yellow wire to a 60/brown wire, so that looks like the switch in your photo.
The resistor may be there to limit current (and heat) through the Tilt Hold relay. It may be one of those relays that's always on.

#15 3 years ago
Quoted from MarkG:

It is indeed on when the game is in play, and releases if the game is tilted.

#16 3 years ago

The tilt hold relay does stay continuously on with this one.

That side switch fixed the original issues. Great help!

And yes per both suggestions above the ball unit did need cleaning and switch adjustments. So now stepping thru all balls - even added balls! So working once again! Yeah!

Now I need to check these advance features - thumpers , mushrooms, add a ball. Etc. it seemed to add 9 balls in an instant.

And it’s time to take her apart for a good bath and clean up!

Stripped cleaned and removed playfield. Think I’ll tumble the screws and fasteners before re-dressing her.

Speaking Of that tilt hold relay. It stays on yes and apparently gets hot. The actuator was broken (working intermittently) Looking for one now. (Marcos and PBR are out of stock )

Removed relay board - that’ll make it easier to clean, adjust and put that actuator on. Ugh

Removed door and hardware. Now for the cabinet !

Hey, just catching up. Yeah, California weather is nice
Not sure if you got your answer about that resistor yet. Could you post a more complete picture of the schematic showing the resistor? I'd like to study it a bit.

Sorry for the delay in my response. (Not all of us are retired jethro!)

Here are some shots of the broken piece and more of the schematics. I’ve ordered the replacement per the comment above. (Id rather find something more nos for the look if nothing else. Pop it open and this will stick out)

Got the replacement part in - is there a certain orientation in these , or can I hook it up either way?

Either way. Unlike diodes, resistors are non directional.

Thanks. Does that look like the part you referred to? I’ll install that tomorrow. Game is still apart. Getting a good cleaning whew

Yup. Pretty much exactly the same.

#27 3 years ago

Got the actuator in and the resistor installed

Cab and head cleaned up some and painted (first webbing attempt). Not happy with it but once I get the red and blue patterns covering a lot of that up, she may turn out ok? (Someone had those patterns painted “grandma’s living room green”)

Did as much as I could to the coin door and hardware (why drill so many holes? Damn lockbars)

Main thing is she back together and playing! Full 100%! Amazing. The add-a-ball feature is my first so that’s cool

Nothing compared to the work I’ve seen on here by others but she just needed some help. No matter what I did it couldn’t hurt

As the Boss says “she ain’t a beauty but hey she’s alright!”
