The United States' Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to land on the Moon, on 20 July 1969.

One giant leap for mankind.

Was just reading a book on the moon landing with our kids, and I'll be sure to mention the anniversary to them today. Still a breathtaking achievement 51 years later, and a reminder of the fantastic shit the US can do when we pull together instead of apart.

And the obvious question is why haven't we built a "base" there?

We (humans) have the ability, and have life sustainable satellites, so why not a Moon station?

Not meaning to poop on your thread, just annoys me I guess. Seems like an obvious next step.

And in terms of setting our mind to things,,, I wish Musk et al would set there minds to filming the actual-live landing of the Space X Stage 1.

Ok, rant over.

I get it.
I am a SciFi geek from way back. 1970s elementary school me would tell you that we would be living all over the solar system by now. I remember thinking that the Space 1999 TV show was likely to be somewhat accurate.

Space Rocket History podcast has a lot of great episodes. Highly recommended if you’re a space history buff.
