What type of plastic did you use for the shooter lane protector and kickout holes?

#103 1 year ago
Quoted from mrm_4:

That’s good to know about the clear holding up with the saucers on yours. I’ve had my share of heart breaks when it comes to clear. Take my Mata Hari always mocking me in the work shop. [quoted image]
My Firepower got messed up too in the trough and in the fronts of the saucers from the eject so I have no faith in clear anymore.
So this afternoon I was just staring at the game. I do this a ton with restos. I find myself just looking at them for a lot longer than most people probably do. I kind of have this thing where if I look at something long enough I eventually understand it. Engines, musical instruments, Rubik’s cube, whatever. Well it hit me, the same concept that I use in the shooter lane with the plastic just being on the lip to keep the ball from making impact but just flush enough to not alter its travel can be applied here but in a horizontal hoop.
So I measured the width and it’s dead on the money at 1/4”
[quoted image]
So I cut a 1/4” piece of my plastic and wrapped it inside the saucer and it lines up perfectly. Clears the eject arm and doesn’t intrude on the ball falling in or interrupt its path of travel.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
I used the double sided adhesive I have for all my decals to keep it from moving around although it basically holds itself in place.
[quoted image][quoted image]
Lastly I applied a tiny amount of felt at the exit so the ball slides off the felt instead of smacking up and over on the lip of the clear.
[quoted image][quoted image]
Overkill? Ehhh probably but now I can sleep at night.

Not overkill at all. Gottlieb started doing this on later EM's to protect from ball wear. But they may sit just a touch deep for the overall protection you are looking for mrm_4.

This is the same plastic used for playfield protectors and hardtops, I bought a few rolls when I made a customer protector for my Shangri La a couple years back and I love it. I use it for all kinds of stuff.

I just checked on my Magnotron playfield and see those in there now. I might order a few to see how they fit but i think youre right about the height. They are just shallow enough that the wood is able to get chewed up on the lip. If it was flush it would prevent that. Thanks for the link!

Always liked the Magnatron artwork, but the layout on that one is a snoozer.

I have the playfield I picked up for $30 that I am using to practice my airbrushing. Im going to finish it this winter after the games Im doing now wrap up. Then Ill clear it in the spring. Might end up being wall art or Ill put it in a game if I find one. Some guy near me had one listed for $120, which wouldve been awesome. To be in on a Magnotron for $150 total. But of course, I missed out on buying it because dropping project games on pinside is like throwing a hotdog in a tank full of piranhas.

Last few “accountable” labels for this playfield still needed redone.

I made a mod today not for the faint of heart…

The center target was too boring, I remembered that I had printed extra targets for my Firepower.

So I pulled out my super sophisticated tools and Mylared the front, put double side adhesive on the back and cut it out.

That looks much better!

And that playfield just pops with color. I bet this pin just looks stellar when you’re standing in the room with it. Gorgeous pin now, likely looks as good if not better than new.

I hope so! I just sanded down the ply and gave it a nice coat of lacquer. It’s only 40 degrees today so we’ll see how well it turns out.

mrm_4 is that motor / relay board just sanded and clear polyurethane? I will definitely give this a try or even just use some latex paint on the board. Of course, then I will wan to reproduce the labels somehow for each item.

Yeah I just sanded with the palm sander with 120 until it was clean then sprayed Rustoleum Clear Lacquer on it. Nothing too special. I thought about painting it either Red or Blue but decided that would be too much.

#122 1 year ago

Painted is cool. Bally painted those boards blue in my Fireball and Time Zone EM machines from 1972-1973. The problem is they are yucky. I've vacuumed and wiped them down, but it's still gross and doesn't look very good. I am inspired to try this sometime. With the price of machines these days I'm thinking I will need to focus on the machines I already own and work on making them as nice as I reasonably can. I can see how the spray lacquer or polyurethane would be nice and slick and easier to keep clean. I think a cheap tumbler and ultrasonic cleaner are in my future.

#123 1 year ago

mrm_4 This winter I think I we are moving my son in law's Space Mission to my basement so I can get it working for him. He has cleaned a bunch of things, but it still is not fully functional. With a 3 year old and 1 year old, he just doesn't have the time to mess with it. Should be a fun project.

#124 1 year ago

I cleared the board on my Cleo. The best reason to do it? Way easier to clean off now compared to the rough bare wood.

Threw the mech board wire harness in the wash tub and drenched it with mean green and then took a tooth brush to everything. Not exactly the same as the washing machine but I rinsed the heck out of everything with piping hot water for quite a while. Then laid it out in front of a box fan and next to the dehumidifier. I also took the score motor unit apart and ran it through the ultrasonic cleaner 3 times. The metal isn’t coming clean so I threw the parts in the tumbler. More to come on this thing.

Steppers.....blah. Only thing worse is score reels on a 4 player game.

But you gotta admit, just a clean up and runs good as new.

I have spent more money then you would think needed for good "quality" appliances that don't last 1/5th the time these pins have! And when not damaged, the ORIGINAL parts still function on a 40-50 year old pin! I marvel at the longevity of the designs and the parts used.

Nice work....you know damn well it'll look great when done mrm_4. Your work as I've stated numerous times and stating the utter obvious, as always, top notch work and result.

That pin, amoung thousands of others, will outlive us all.

Yeah, I've had a few beers tonight :p

Quoted from DanMarino:

And boom goes the dynamite!

My recipe is always the same:
1. Degreaser in the ultrasonic
2. Metal soaks in Evaporust for a few hours or overnight depending on how bad it is
3. Any metal that fits in the tumbler for 4-6 hours

I’m working through the coin unit stepper now then I’ll do all of the relay mechs usually 3 at a time.

So what size ultrasonic cleaner should I buy?
Should the ultrasonic cleaner also have a heating element?

For the tumbler, what size should I get?
What tumbler media works well and is cheap? haha

Actually, I like cheap. haha But cheap that isn't going to be total garbage and break on me.

I just use the cheap ultrasonic and tumbler from Harbor Freight. There are threads on both of those tools and some of the guys on here get really into some intense versions and brands of both but I’m just jeans and T-shirt kind of guy. I’ve had my ultrasonic for about 3 years but I’ve gone through 3 tumblers in that time.

Looks good. I usually use a 443, some people suggested it and it works great.

Nice I’ll buy a couple. I’m still looking for that perfect tool for the female Jones plugs. I was told to use a .22 cal boring tool but I’m not liking it.

The mech board is coming along slow and steady. Almost finished with it.

WTF how is it?

If you tell your brain it’s NOT BEER it’s pretty good.
If you don’t drink NAs and you get your mouth ready for real beer then it’s disappointing haha. I can take it or leave it.
