Joined the club today! This game is fantastic. I have two issues out of the box. One, when I hit down to the drop targets it just keeps making this awful noise or over and over. Super loud lightning kind of noise. Is this part of the game? The other issue I have is it randomly plunges the ball for you on a multiplayer game. So the next player has to be ready to go immediately. Guessing that's an opto or something

#3692 2 years ago
Quoted from lpeters82:

It sounds to me like you have a stuck switch. Go into the test menu and check your switch test and stuck switch test. That seems like it could be causing the two issues in one. Since the switch is triggering the auto eject assumes that the ball has already been out on the playfield and needs to be fed back into the game.

Thanks! That was actually the first thing I tested. I did notice one thing since then. It seems to only eject the ball when the previous player had the targets down. If the targets are up the ball sits in the trough and waits for the plunge. If the targets are down it kicks the ball out and plunges it. I will run through it all again and see if I notice anything else.

I did notice something on the switch test earlier. Lower_drop_target was on the list. I couldn't find a drop Target that correlates with it.

It looks like the culprit might be banked to on the drops. At random times it doesn't register as up.

Silly question, what secures the topper on the base unit? It slides on the rod but I think I'm missing something to secure it.

Next silly question, do you know somewhere online I could get that size screw? I went to three hardware stores and they didn't have any. For some reason I can't find one online.

#3747 2 years ago
Quoted from John_C:

Do you have an Ace Hardware nearby? They have tons of various set screws. Maybe take the removed shaft with you to verify fit.
And in my case, my knife holder was using two set screws, both the same size. You might check yours to make sure both threaded holes are empty.

There's one about 20 minutes away. I'll check that out! Thanks

#3749 2 years ago
Quoted from Morgoth00:

It's probably a 4-40 grub setscrew as those typically use a .050 Allen bit. Did you measure the diameter?

Actually tried a 4-40 earlier today and it wasn't a fit. I'll have to measure the diameter.

Quoted from jeffro01:

Wanted to take some time to post my review of the game now that I've put roughly 100 games on my machine, this review will be based on how things stand today and are completely my opinions only. This review will cover everything I can think of and will be as honest as anyone reading it would want, warts and all.
Overall Impressions/Feedback:
I wanted to start here because I really feel like every review should start with a summary so that if you don't want to read the novel that is the rest of this, you don't have to. Okay so to start, Spooky has done something really awesome here. Now that I have my machine I really cannot, for the life of me, figure out where ANY of the negativity has come from for this title (cannot speak on Ultraman, this is entirely about Halloween). Once some of the warts have been removed, more on that below, this pin is going to be absolutely outstanding. The game is challenging but straight forward, the art package is second to none, and the "bang for the buck" is unparalleled in the market today. Overall grade, A+++++++.
Shipping/Receiving:
Honestly, and this may be just me, I really do not like how Spooky packaged my machine. To date I've received NIB from Dutch, Stern, and JJP but none of them box like Spooky does. The machine itself was strapped to the pallet which I wasn't expecting and to get it off you have to cut those straps which of course is no big deal but because the machine is essentially sandwiched between a top piece and a bottom piece once we cut those straps, getting it off the pallet was difficult and unexpectedly challenging. I had an oversized pallet on mine (which was requested) which added a bit of extra difficulty. Once you get it off the pallet though, it wasn't any different than any other machine. Overall shipping grade C.
Build Quality:
Overall my machine is top notch here, no issues with the head being out of square (like one person showed), decals were applied properly with no bubbles or peeling edges. Really like the fact Spooky ships the felt leg covers with their machines. Wires were reasonably well bundled and organized although I have serious OCD here so my standards are a bit high but overall I'd say B+. Game worked out of the box but I did have to tighten the spring on the center drop target which seems to be common. I also had to redo the pumpkin mount as after about 50 games mine began to bend down and sag a bit. A well placed zip tie around the light socket and back of the bracket solved that problem. Otherwise, mechanically the game was top notch. The main screen isn't very good but enabling the "gamma" setting as recommended by another poster worked pretty well. Still will probably do the IPS screen upgrade at some point. My main issue with build quality was the playfield, whoever is making these needs to SAND EVERY OPENING BEFORE THEY CLEAR IT... Never have I had to clean out a game so frequently out of the box. We've, and this is no joke, had to clean it up at least a dozen times in 100 games just from saw dust debris that the balls knock off the drop openings until it's all "knocked off". Don't get me wrong, the playfield is beautiful and crisp and solid, just need to sand those openings before it's cleared. The coin box also surprised me in that there is no attachment loop on the back so it just "sits" in the spot. Overall build quality A-.
Gameplay:
One of the other things that really surprised me is the code, and by surprised I mean (again this is my opinion) I'm quite happy with where Spooky is at on this and don't see the reasons for the negativity. Even in the current version the game is plenty deep enough and will be exceptionally deep once Spooky gets everything in there they want. Animations are fine, modes are plenty, shots are challenging. However, the bugs are crippling... Every so often the game will eject 3 balls into the lane and then lock up, or you'll find yourself "stuck" with no idea what shot is the next one. The modes have got to have a timer... ALL of them. Also, having to restart everything on every ball is extremely frustrating. There has to be some sort of "carry over" from one ball to the next. Every new ball essentially is a completely new game and while the layout is awesome, it gets a bit disheartening to always have to start over every ball. There is no "mystery" light so telling me "mystery is lit" was extremely confusing at first, I get this is a carryover from Ultraman but please fix this. It should say "shoot the pumpkin" or something that doesn't call out a light that doesn't exist. I know all of this can be fixed and that's what's so exciting about this game, when they are fixed, this pin is going to be next level awesome. I look forward to having more settings like ball timers and such but I get their point. People freaked out so much in the beginning they had no choice but to start pumping in assets and callouts but I can't help but think that impacted the basics a bit. Currently, and currently is the main point here as I know it'll get better, C.
Other Thoughts:
Powder coating is amazing, really what you get for your money is simply not available from anywhere else. I know I already made that point but look at the price and then look at what you get... It's a complete steal in todays market. An equivalent JJP/Stern would run at least $12K NIB. Audio is out. freaking. standing. Getting used to how the game plays with the balls coming out of the sling is pretty neat. I don't think balls need to be staged there, it gives me a moment to breath and "reset" a bit as the game progresses. Out of my collection, no other pin plays like this one which I really, and I mean really, enjoy. Personally I think Spooky has a complete Grand Slam here with this pin and once some of the rougher edges are corrected (code and continuing manufacturing improvements) those who have gotten out are going to really regret that decision. The heat Spooky has taken to date is quite frankly, ridiculous. Their service and support is top notch, SpookyLuke is absolutely amazing. Those of you who are still on the fence, don't be, get excited about your place in line as seeing is believing with this pin. I'm so happy I jumped in on this pin when I did and have absolutely zero regrets and am super excited as to what's coming on the horizon with future code updates. Thank you to everyone at Spooky who has worked on this pin, built this pin, and made this pin come to life. I'll keep saying it, you really do have something special here.
Thanks,
Jeff

Good review! I only have about 30 games on mine. That's not enough to give a quality review. If I can get my center ramp and scoop working well, this is going to be one of my favorite games. That's crazy considering I bought the game for my wife. LOL. When I'm actually make it to the pretzel shot it is fantastic! It might be my favorite shot in pinball!

This issue seems to go away and come back. We've determined it occurs the first time you knock down the middle and left drop targets while the right target is still standing. It starts randomly making thunder noises and giving you lots of points until you knock down the third target. If you don't knock it down and drain, it auto plunges the next ball. The weird things is that it only happens the first time you knock down the two drops. It's fine the rest of the game.

I took the drops apart twice and all seems good. Checked every connection. You would think if it were a connection it would happen all the time. If anyone has any suggestions on what to check I would appreciate it.

#3785 2 years ago

How do you reset the high score on this game? I took all my wife's high scores and she's ticked off. LOL

#3989 2 years ago

Is this game brutal or is it just my setup? I'm generally a decent player but I really stink at this one.

#3993 2 years ago
Quoted from jeffro01:

It's definitely a skill game which at least for me, makes it fun because of the way the game challenges you. Every shot has a purpose and some are especially hard to hit. This is easily my most favorite game and I'm by no means a high skill player. I had a 3 ball game under 100K the other day so... Yeah...
Jeff

Yeah I played a half hour game of Godzilla the other day and I don't think I've had a 5 minute game on Halloween....yet. lol. It's kicking my family's butt. But my wife said she absolutely loves it.

Is there a secret skill shot for Reaper? I plunged to the ball and immediately hit it into the scoop. Reaper started!

#4365 2 years ago

Really enjoying this game. Is there a way to turn up the music volume and turn down the call out volume? It doesn't look like a setting exists. The reaper is really low for me.

#4497 2 years ago

I'm slowly reducing the rejects on my ramp. I'm probably around 60% right now. I've lowered the pitch. I've adjusted the diverter. I found that there were two wires hanging down near the top of the ramp and were sometimes obstructing the ball. I feel like I need to lower the drops a very small amount. However; the wing nut is super tight. Is this something I shouldn't be messing with?

Also, if I make the picture of the game too low it actually seems to reject more. I guess it's bouncing around too much?

I really enjoy this game. But I need to fix the ramp. The rejects make it frustrating. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

#4516 2 years ago
Quoted from Morgoth00:

I was looking at the angle of the tops of the drops the other day, not being parallel to the pf. Seems like a possible speed bump
[quoted image]

Yeah, mine are the same way. It looks like you adjust them with the lock nut. But it's so tight I didn't want to force it.

#4537 2 years ago

I stacked the first mode with hedge multiball and it spit out balls for 10 full minutes. It was like the endless multiball. Lol. Guessing that's a bug?

Anyone ever get a "Ball 4" to come up after you put your name in?

#6102 1 year ago

When I play the boogeyman wizard mode is something supposed to happen after I hit the last yellow target and hit the ball over the bridge? Nothing happens for me. It just sits there with the ball on the drop ramp. I did it three times and nothing happened. So I took the glass off and did it. Nothing happened. I put the machine in switch test and the optos register as the ball comes across the bridge. I put the game in normal mode and it plays fine. I can get to the house and start the multiball without issue.

#6135 1 year ago

With a lot of help from folks on this thread, I finally have my game playing well. I'm starting to really enjoy it! The new code is great. My Boogeyman mode still doesn't work so I'm going to reload it.

#6217 1 year ago

I reloaded the new code and I still cannot play The Boogeyman. On the last shot it just sits on the teeter totter ramp in the upper left corner. I put the machine in switch test mode and the optos register 100 times out of 100. They also trigger perfectly fine in normal gameplay. Any ideas on what to check? It's a very odd issue.

#6258 1 year ago

A technician friend, and some of the spooky crew, helped me resolve my wizard mode issue. I'm very appreciative of Spooky for the help! Thank you! The wizard mode is as advertised. Wow!

Quoted from Lopa:

When I first get a game I usually switch it to 4 balls so I can see more of the code. You’ll get there.

This is the only game I've ever put on five balls. We have a lot of guests over to our house. I noticed they were all playing Halloween (a lot) but none of them could get to the cool stuff. I put it on five balls so they can at least get to Reaper Multiball. I wish Spooky would carry over the state of the house hits so more of my guests can experience the Halloween multiball. The pretzel shot is simply amazing!

#10233 1 year ago
Quoted from smokinhos:

Hmmmm.. I like it when friends and family are over and they can experience the game, but I also like it when they play a few extra times to try to get further without "helping" them. I think trying to get it on 3 ball makes it so much more rewarding when they do. My older bros come into town and its the progression, or lack of that keeps them engaged. Its really the journey and failure that makes it so much better when you finally get it. Remember how many times you had to speed run, jump, miss the turtle, duck, then slide perfectly to pass that impossible level back in the day? I won't be handing out participation trophies at my house, you have to earn it...

To each his own.

I actually typed more to my response and now realize I somehow managed to delete it. LOL. Anyway, I have my games setup differently. I have a couple modern games that are setup brutal so I don't lose my edge in tournaments. I have the two most popular games setup easy because my guests really enjoy them. I don't want them having 30 second ball times and walking away. They are there just to have a beer and a good time. The rest are setup at the factory default settings.

Keep in mind in 1.09 code you can fine tune the diverters position on both directions.

Thanks for this adjustment. It's got my ramp working much better. I had tried manually adjusting the diverter many times without luck. Still kind of tweaking the settings in the software.

Did something change with the upper flipper power in this update? It feels like my butt pretzel shot is much slower. Probably all psychological!

The reaper multiple sounds fantastic! Good update. Thank you!

I still have one request. I don't know how to say this nicely. But my family has a few members that really stink at pinball. I'd love to see the ability to extend the ball save timers so they can see more of the game. LOL

I have noticed a pattern but I keep getting two random balls in the trough since the code update

#14837 10 months ago
Quoted from Rdoyle1978:

2 people are having the eject issue, and this is the first time I've heard about an actual skill shot issue. the other stuff is cosmetic. Is this a serious post?

Count me as someone having ball eject issues. Played a bunch of games with no issues. Upgraded the code on the same day and I'm getting multiple balls in the trough at least once a game. I've never had one single ejection issue until I updated the code.

I've been struggling with the middle ramp since I purchased Halloween. The diverter adjustment settings were a huge help. However, after about 2 or 3 games, the ramp was very difficult to hit due to flipper fade. I was so annoyed I put the game up for sale.

I put on precision flippers this week and I've been hitting the ramp consistently after many games. I'm not sure why they work so well. I'm guessing it might be the better bushings. Either way, I hope they hold up for the long long haul. The game is much more enjoyable with them.

Not a huge fan of the green rubbers but it's all I had. LOL

Quoted from hawkeyexx:

I installed set on my Dale jr. I took a scale and weigh the old flipper bat and the new precision flipper and it was heavier. I could really see better performance from the precision flipper. Keep us posted on how they are doing .....

I ended up going back to regular flippers. I liked the precs flippers a lot but had an issue I couldn't resolve. I did a full flipper rebuild when I put the regular flippers back on and it's working better than the original ser.

#15438 8 months ago
Quoted from dnaman:I have had serious flipper fatigue that happens on my HW within maybe 15 minutes or less of game play. I am aware of the coil heat issue on many titles, as PinMonk has pointed out. I thought early on that these newer style flippers might help in some way but I doubt it. I might just have to go the coil cooling method.

The precision flippers felt more powerful and accurate on the middle ramp shot. I liked them. I started to have troubles with them on the first weekend, so I can't evaluate the flipper fade. However, with the new flipper rebuild, it now feels just as powerful as it did with the precision flippers!

I should probably probably investigate the fans for flipper fade. My friends and family used to play the game a lot more than me. But with the new code editions, I've been playing it a lot more. I have very long playing games.

#15460 7 months ago
Quoted from Mro-Tek:

thank you spooky for following through with this game. You could have just moved on to your next title when things looked bleak but you have truly made this a great game at this point. hats of to the dedication you put in.

I agree with your statements. I put this game up for sale twice and I'm glad I didn't sell it. I shouldn't have to put that much work into fixing a new machine. However; besides the precision flipper debacle, it's been playing decent over the past 6 months. I still have some odd issues like half-working hedge Michaels, a broken playfield latch, and a middle ramp that needs constant adjustment, but the last three code updates have made it a very enjoyable game. I find myself playing it more and more every weekend!

#15470 7 months ago
Quoted from GreenMachine19:

I was considering precision flippers as I have them on AFMr and CCr and love them. I will definitely putting them on MMr too. Why not HW?

Believe I just had a defective bushing. I wouldn't let my comments deter anyone. The short time they were working I enjoyed them. I did a full flipper rebuild and that ended up really doing the trick.

Quoted from Requis:

Just wanted to take a moment to update on issues with my Halloween, can still only play 1 ball per player but got a new board from Spooky hope that resolves the issue.
Vibrating issue addressed with black electrical tape on the edges folded over.. glass slides in perfect and no vibrations.
One question i have is that every time the left flipper is triggered there’s a smashing glass sound affect that triggers. Is there any way to reduce just that specific sound without impacting other less frequent special affect sounds…that one is really starting to annoy. i would turn it off but not sure what othe special affect sounds would be impacted. And because you can only play 1 ball at the moment it’s tough to get through the nodes.’
Also is it normal to go up the middle ramp and always come back down the left side, both ramps do the same thing every time i go up either ramp it always comes down the left side.
Thanks everyone for the help!

I had a similar problem and it ended up being the wires broken inside a couple of the connectors across the game. The vibration of the he flipper was just causing them to trigger. We had to solder the wires within the connector. That might not be your issue, but that was my issue. I forget all the connectors that were impacted. But the drops were one of them.

Has anyone successfully been able to get their backglass signed with a decent quality marker? My buddy paid extra to meet John Carpenter somewhere and said he could take something from the machine with him to it signed. Based on this thread, it sounds like the knife is the best option. I was thinking maybe the play cards as well. But the back glass sure would be badass.

Looks awesome ! My buddy was going to the show so I asked him to take my knife. I didn't want to ask him to carry around the glass with all of his other stuff. Feels like I should put a sheet of mylar over it or something. Maybe?
