I’m about 24hrs away from being in the club. Excited to pick it up!

#333 came home today. I love it!

#7939 1 year ago
Quoted from Roostking:

Any unboxing tips? Mines in production and final invoice paid!

I actually bought mine already opened, from a fellow Pinsider.

But like rotordave said, the NIB experience is pretty straightforward. Slide it out of the box, do a quick check to make sure nothing shook loose/off during shipping, plug it in, and enjoy!

I’m a HUGE horror fan. So much so that I cohost a weekly horror podcast that’s coming up on 4 years (The Swearwolves).

I even flew to PA last week in order to meet The Horror Master himself. He was awesome! Here’s my cohost and I with Carpenter, in front of the actual car from the movie (I’m the guy in the middle).

Quoted from IdahoRealtor:

Some screws on the bottom of the cabinet. Right side inner cabinet decal scratched.

These were my only two issues. One screw chilling in the bottom of the cabinet (no biggie), and my right inner decal (NOT the art blade) was completely torn off. What's on that decal anyway? All I can see is some torn paper remnants.

That said... this game absolutely rocks. I've had minor issues with NIB Sterns as well (I had to do some major tweaking with the fork ramp on my Star Wars Premium, and my GB Premium needed some minor adjustments, too).

#8358 1 year ago
Quoted from IdahoRealtor:

Not sure which decal you're referring to. Where is it? I was referring to the art blade.

Right under the playfield... on the right-hand side.

I played about 5 games today, just to get some video for my podcast (it's a horror pod, not pinball... but sometimes those worlds collide). I had the camera on a tripod in front of me (around eye level), so I had to wrap my arms around the side, squatting, with my arms nearly fully outstretched to avoid being seen.

Needless to say... I sucked. I think my best game was like 10M. Fortunately, I only needed like a couple minutes of video, so it should work out okay. But yeah... I need to play more!

Quoted from Mudflaps:

That’s all you need. One light coat, wait a few minutes. Medium coat. Wait a few minutes. Then 1-2 heavy coats. 1 can is more than enough.

Thanks for the reminder! Just ordered a can for my original rails. I see some very minor wear, so I'll nip that shit right in the bud.

[quoted image][quoted image]

I've got a trio of spare metal gear servos coming on Tuesday.

I also clear-coated my rails and lockdown bar yesterday. It's a "preventative maintenance" sort of weekend over here.

#9100 1 year ago
Quoted from Spacemanratso09:

So any tips on prep before I spray the rails/lockdown parts with clear ?

Nothing from me! It couldn't have been easier or more straightforward. I just took them off and did like 3-4 coats, with each coat a little heavier than the previous one. I sprayed mine outdoors in AZ, so it didn't take long for each coat to dry.

Anybody have their backglass signed? I’m going to be meeting some people from the movie this weekend, and I’m torn between having them sign in either silver sharpie, white paint pen, or black sharpie. I’m leaning towards silver at the moment, but would love to see what others have done, for reference.

Two things:

1) Halloween Ends. I really liked it, but I also totally get why many didn’t.

2) I just got back from Son of Monsterpalooza in Burbank, where I met some of the cast members from Halloween (though Sandy Johnson was the only one I hadn’t met before). I brought my backglass with me.

Before I even got in to the show, a dude (fellow Pinsider, perhaps?) chatted with me for a bit and said he’s got CE #3 at home. Awesome!!!

Another dude walked by, pointed at the backglass and said, “Hey! I know that guy!” I looked up at him, and it was Anthony Michael Hall. Haha.

First up when I got in was Nick Castle. Super nice guy. He recognized it immediately, and said “Somebody’s got a pinball machine!!!” He said he’s played it a handful of times and really digs it.

Next was Tommy Lee Wallace. He was funny because I had a spot picked out for him and he said, “Have you ever seen my signature? It’s huge! How about at the bottom?” Deal.

After that was Sandy Johnson. She was incredibly sweet… and I spaced on getting a photo with her because I’m dumb.

That was it for yesterday. Then this morning, I chatted with PJ Soles. She obviously recognized what it was, and told me that she recorded her callouts in a hotel room, and was worried that security was going to get called on her for screaming.

I went with silver for the signatures. I’m really happy with how it turned out:

Bonus photos!! I also met Tom Atkins (who I’ve met a few times) and Stacey Nelkin (first time) from Halloween III. Both were incredibly awesome.

They signed my original Halloween III poster, which I got signed by Tommy Lee Wallace as well. I also have John Carpenter and Dick Warlock on it, who I’ve met at other shows.

If you want to hear more about the show, we’re going to cover it on my horror podcast in a couple of weeks (our Halloween episode, which will be out on 10/31). I’ll talk a bit about each person, along with some travel stories (like why I dialed 911 on my way home). Search “The Swearwolves” wherever you listen to podcasts, or check us out on YouTube (I have some video of the show) if that sounds like something you may dig. Parental warning: like our name suggests, we swear a lot.

Just noticed my knife and hand on the topper is not working. Seems to be in the same position for awhile. Any ideas what might have happened?

This may be a silly question, but is it still connected to the mechanism? Mine came off at one point, but I didn’t notice until I hopped up on a stool to confirm. I just popped it back on and tightened the hex screw, and was back in business.

One more thing is to check to see if the mechanism activates if you hit a flipper button while in attract mode. The knife should move as “Loomis” speaks.

So I ordered one of those mini TVs, but because I'm on a Mac, my computer won't let me convert the MP4 file to TVS via the converter on their website (https://learn.tinycircuits.com/Kits/TSV-Converter-Tutorial/), and I can't find any other compatible converters.

Anybody willing to convert it for me? It's a 4.5 minute abridged silent version of a certain black and white movie that Laurie and Tommy Doyle watch on TV. Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules here. FWIW, I actually own the movie.

Quoted from Roostking:

Today was cleaning and mod day for Halloween. A couple of weeks ago I grabbed whatever sandpaper I had and sanded down the shooter handle, as mine was a bit rough. Felt good so found some stain that was pretty close to the knife in the shooter lane. I applied a second coat today and will let it dry. Feels awesome.
I love Vintomans house mod, but I decided the house windows needed some updating Simply used some side cutters to cut out the frames. I like seeing more of the screen. Also used the same stain from the handle to "dirty up" the house. I need to do more work on this lol.
Applied the clear drop target decals and they look great.
Applied Blitz carnuba wax to the playfield, butter cab, and HEMI Challenger in the garage
This pin is amazing and just hits everything I was hoping for when I FOMOd. Immersion, well coded/rules only getting better, art and soundtrack.
Homerun Spooky!!!![quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I installed the TinyCircuits TinyTV mod tonight. I'll probably mess with the mounting some more (I'm definitely open to suggestions), but for now, I'm just using glue dots (I tried museum putty, but it didn't hold as well - though I'm in a warmer climate... not sure if that makes a difference), which seems to be holding well for the time being - and has held up fine for a couple mods on my Ghostbusters. Feel free to scoff at my "paint job." It's a combination of a sharpie (brown) and a paint pen (silver). I may give it another go with a proper paint job + clear coat. Big thanks to Rdoyle1978 for help with the video files!

Once the 1.09 is UP up would one of you kind souls have the ability to upload the extracted folders to dropbox/google drive? I'm on a Mac, and I get an error message when I try to unzip the file. I even tried a separate program and it still won't unpack it. I'll try it again when 1.09 is up, but I suspect I'm going to have the same issue.

The universe will reward you with "Don't Fear the Reaper" on ball 1 and a GC score.

*EDIT: I'm dumb and didn't realize the file doesn't need to be unzipped/unpacked. Nothing to see here*

Quoted from metallik:

Those are all restore instructions.. the problem is spooky doesn't really have update instructions on that page, just notes on how to use the thumbdrive. The update instructions would be:
- download the .pkg file
- copy it to the root of a USB stick formatted FAT32 or NTFS
- insert the stick into a free slot on the motherboard (or possibly a USB extension cable inside the coindoor)
- power on the game. After fully booting it will begin the update automatically.

Oh, sweet! I thought it had to be unzipped too. My Mac wasn’t allowing it. Looks like I should be able to play tonight after all.

#11671 1 year ago

Well… shit. I tried 2 different thumb drives (8G and 16G), both in FAT32 format, and it doesn’t like either of them. Any specific drives you’d recommend to get the job done? I appear to be in the market. Also... when buying a thumb drive - is it possible to know if it was formatted on a PC vs Mac? I have 2 Macs in the house and a ChromeBook. This house has several doors, but no Windows.

Quoted from Geeterman1:

Watch the video with sound. It’s constantly trying to push it back up even though it’s in the up position.
I’m a newb to all of this but there is an opto laser that gets blocked when that drop target is down. The drop target has a rubber cover on the bottom to block the laser and can come off (mine did). In my case I had the opposite issue, my opto never noticed when the drop target was down cause the laser shot through the drop target. Maybe in your case the rubber cover fell off but got itself stuck in the opto and now your machine thinks the drop target is always down when it’s not?

I’m currently at a horror convention in Vegas. Earlier today, I met Charles Cyphers (Sheriff Brackett) and Nancy Keyes/Loomis (Annie). Both were very, very nice, and signed my backglass.

Both also signed my original Halloween II poster (though Cyphers used a dark marker in a dark part of the poster - so his is hard to see. Doh!):

Big thanks to spandol for helping work through the Mac update process, with the help of thekaiser82 's comment of using the terminal. We found that Finder wasn't actually showing the hidden file so using the terminal is the way to go. You won't need it for the next update though, just this one.
The instructions on the website have been updated with the terminal command to use: https://www.spookypinball.com/game-support/hwn-um-update-process/
Thanks for all the positive comments and bug reports that have been sent through.

As a Mac guy, THANK YOU for this! I was able to update my game tonight without needing to ask someone to send me their thumb drive in the mail (btw... thanks, @mudflaps!). I played just one game, and I still suck (14K), but I can already tell that this is a nice step up from 1.09.

A tip to other Mac users who are using the steps on the website: make sure to include a space between the word "clean" and the "/Volumes/USBname" part. I didn't notice that at first and got the error message I'd grown so accustomed to when I plugged the thumb drive into the game. Once I realized my mistake, it worked like a charm.

Only experienced a few games on Ultraman (getting one in a trade soon), never played Halloween: Is Silver Shamrock represented in any of the game modes?

No, only the first movie is represented in this one.

Yeah, I've got red and white nonstop.

All in all, though: good update. I only played a few games, but the light thing was the only issue that jumped out at me.

Trying to update to the newest code. I’ve done plenty the same way. It’s been stuck for 8 hours. Any ideas on what’s going on?

The code updates usually have the same file name, so if you still have a previous version downloaded, it may have added a number to the end of the file name. Delete the number and give it another go.

So I have an honest question for us owners. Of all the games in your collection, which game gets the most playtime?
For me it’s Halloween but I’m curious how it ranks with y’all?

Since picking up Halloween last summer, the five that get the most play have been:

1. Halloween
2. Ghostbusters
3. The Walking Dead
4. Monster Bash
5. The Addams Family

Thanks for this!

I ordered this, too (it actually arrived yesterday). I also haven't researched anything since then, but if I'm reading this correctly, does it literally just press in? I haven't looked at the board, but I assumed I was going to have to de-solder the old one and solder in the new one. Do they literally just pop in and out? If so... sweet! I'll get off my lazy ass and swap in the new one tomorrow.

Everyone that had that problem has had the file name wrong.

Yep! Check to see if there's a number at the end of the file name (probably a "1"). If there is, delete it, and it should update without a fuss. I'm a Mac user too, and mine updated without any problems. Hopefully it's just the file name.

I only got a handful of games in on the new code, and it seemed great from what I saw. That said, I didn't see much because I straight up SUCKED. I think my best game was like 9M.

When I picked my dog up from Doggy Day Camp today, I saw that PetsMart has started to put out their Halloween stuff.

My dog now has her first horror shirt (and a couple new toys):

Quoted from metallik:

some tips I use:
Plunge around medium-hard and practicing live-catching the feed on the left flipper. Shoot Judith from this catch and you're guaranteed either an extra ball, or a lucrative 2-ball multiball you can add to existing modes.
Get good at house mb, the house supers can be huge. Do nothing but rip spinners for your first super during its ballsave.
Some modes are better played in single ball.. I find the 'roving shot' mode to be dead simple, trap and wait for it to move to an easy shot, make it, repeat. Always start the next mode ASAP, there's precious little points on the playfield otherwise.

I only played one game tonight, but followed a more “catch and shoot” approach and put up 35M - which is my new HS.

I still need a lot of practice, but this was super helpful. Thanks!

After having no issues with updating to 1.12 on my Mac, I absolutely cannot get 1.13 to update. I used the same thumb drive as the last time, the file name is correct (no numbers added), there's nothing else on the USB stick, I checked for hidden files in terminal (followed the clearing step on Spooky's website), and I keep getting the error message. I tried a different thumb drive and had the same problem.

I even bought a brand new stick last night, and no dice.

Any other recommendations?

Quoted from BlueRiverLore:

For my updates I have to use an older 'USB 2' 32 GB device. If you look at the connector that plugs in does it have a black tab (USB 2) or blue tab (USB 3)?

I tried both. The one I successfully used last time was USB 3 (16G), and this new one I picked up last night is USB 2 (32G).

Anybody get any answers on the Mac install issue? It's strange, but the game deletes the file off the USB drive trying to update. I get an error as well on the install.

It's still there - it just turns invisible. If you open your USB drive, hit shift + command + period button, and it'll pop up (along with a couple other invisible files). It's weird.

Yes, new code coming soon. Testers found a few thorny ones that were a bit harder to reproduce all the time, so we just want to make sure we get those ones in this next update too.

Bummer. Just tried the update on my Mac with two different sticks, following the terminal command. Same issue as before (but worked when I updated to 1.12).

Oh, well. Guess I'm hanging out until 1.14. I don't have a PC, nor do I have easy access to one.

Quoted from Mrg50:

To check to see if there are hidden files:
From your terminal, type the following “cd /Volumes/“ followed by the name of your SD (no space between the name and the /)
Type “ls”. You should see only your Halloween .pkg file letting you know you are in the right area before proceeding
Type “ls ._*” This will list any hidden files
If there is a hidden file, type “rm “ followed by the full name of the hidden file including the “._” at the front of the file. (Yes Space between the name and the rm command)

You are amazing! THAT WORKED!!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I got back late last night from the H45 convention in Pasadena. I had a blast, met a ton of great people from the entire franchise, and got some more signatures added to my backglass from people from the original film. The new additions are John Michael Graham (“Bob”), Will Sandin (“Michael Myers - age 6”), Brent LePage (“Lonnie”) and Mickey Yablans (“Richie”).

IMG_2637 (resized).jpegIMG_2637 (resized).jpeg

Here’s some more Halloween-related stuff that I got signed. Most of these are posters I’ve been adding signatures to over time, but this weekend helped put a good dent in a lot of them:

IMG_2644 (resized).jpegIMG_2644 (resized).jpeg

IMG_2645 (resized).jpegIMG_2645 (resized).jpeg

IMG_2626 (resized).jpegIMG_2626 (resized).jpeg

IMG_2663 (resized).jpegIMG_2663 (resized).jpeg

John Carpenter showed up yesterday for a panel. He wasn’t signing autographs for anyone afterwards (total bummer for my backglass), but I did get pretty close to him. I was hoping he’d say, “oh, what the hell,” but no dice.

IMG_2659 (resized).jpegIMG_2659 (resized).jpeg

Overall: AWESOME weekend! Can’t wait for H50 in 2028!

Quoted from PanzerKraken:

John Carpenter posted on IG he's playing his Halloween pinball and posted a video of it. Felt sad to see that he's not running up to date code, man is that machine stock code from initial launch? So much missing!

I noticed that, too. I'm going to see him at a convention in April, and part of me wants to hand him a thumb drive with the latest code. I'm having him sign my Halloween backglass, which I've finally mustered the courage to attempt to safely transport on an airplane. Other than Jamie Lee Curtis, his signature is the only big one I'm missing on it (without needing a ouija board).

#16468 4 months ago
Quoted from Mudflaps:

Have a script ready so you won’t get nervous:
“Hello John. You’re old and you will soon be dead. First, please update your Halloween pinball code. Here is a thumb drive, your butler can do it. Second, please sign this giant piece of pinball glass. It was a carry on. Third and last, was Chevy Chase an asshole during Memoirs of an Invisible Man?”

LOLLLLLLLLLL

You're not far off, man. His age is one of the reasons I'm flying out to this one. The last time I met him, he seemed pretty spry, but you never know.

Sadly, the glass is too big to be a carry-on, so I'll have to check it. It's also too big to fit most standard suitcase sizes, so I recently bought an EXTRA large suitcase. I plopped the glass in there the other day to see if it's big enough. Success!

HalloweenSuitcaseTest (resized).jpgHalloweenSuitcaseTest (resized).jpg

My plan is to wrap the shit out of it with bubble wrap, pad the corners, sandwich it between at least two pillows, and basically pad/fill the inside of the suitcase enough (packing peanuts?) so that there's no wiggle room (and put my actual checked items in a separate bag). I'm totally open to suggestions on this front. I'll be devastated if this thing gets destroyed.

I booked direct flights both ways, to minimize bag tossing.

As for Chevy Chase... I actually have an original Memoirs of an Invisible Man poster. The first time I met Carpenter, I got his signature on several items, but was hesitant about Memoirs because I know he hates it and working with Chevy Chase - so I left it at home. Now that I've met him a few times, I just might bring it. I can't imagine he's signed many. I probably won't do it, but we'll see. If I do, I'll tee it up with a joke to ease any tension.

#16472 4 months ago
Quoted from Roostking:

Can you get something small enough to be a carry on?

I wish! Maximum carryon dimensions are 26X16X10. The glass is 27X16.5. Just BARELY too big, but would be even bigger in a case. I don't think it would work.

Quoted from BWT67:

What airline are you flying? Some of the business-class options allow for a larger carry on/personal item. I'd be terrified putting that in a suitcase. I'm sure it'll be ok, but that puppy would be on my lap the whole way.

Thanks! I'm flying Southwest. I'll take a look at their Business Class options.

#16492 3 months ago
Quoted from BWT67:

Totally, and if they don't have those options available, might be worth the cost to pickup a pelican travel case or something similar as a checked bag, or as another member has suggested, private shipment. I'd lose it if anything happened, plus all those sig's already!
Edit: Were you at H45 this past October by chance?

I'll look into the Pelican case. Thanks for the tip!

And yep! I was at H45. It was a blast!

Bumping this post because after weighing several options, I took @bwt67's advice (and that of others on other forums) and ordered a Pelican case last night. Once it arrives, I'll "stress test" it with the glass from one of my other pins. I'm going to throw it around, toss it off my roof, etc., and post the results here.

Quoted from Nightmare:

Did you ask John if he finally updated to the latest code on Halloween?

I originally planned on bringing him a thumb drive with the latest code, but I totally spaced it while packing.

I also had him sign a translite in case the TSA destroys my glass on the return flight. He laughed and said, “yeah, that’s probably a good idea!”

My flight home is in about 4 hours. The glass got here without incident, so hopefully my return flight goes smoothly. Wish me luck!

I meant to post this last night, but... success! Hats off to Pelican. I transported this in one of their cases (the 1690), and it worked like a charm. That said, now that Carpenter's on the backglass, I have no intention of ever taking it on an airplane again... unless it's to get Jamie Lee Curtis on it.
