What are the best tips to have on hand for pinball board work with this model?

    #2 8 years ago

the FR-300 comes with a 0.8mm tip (see link below)

another good sized tip to own is the 1.6mm for larger components (bridge rectifiers on pinballs and flybacks on arcade machines)

    Also best solder?

Looking back on my order, it looks like I got N50-01, N50-04, and N50-06.

    I think my FR300 came with 1.0

Get the drill bit and holder too. The FR300 tips seem to clog faster than the older style. They also seem to last longer....

Skip the no clean solder. It doesnt wet as well as rosin core and despite the name, no clean solder still makes a mess. It is also tougher to clean up than rosin solder.

FR300 maintenance (a little more in-depth than the manual provides).

    word to the wise
when performing a "large" job, be sure to occasionally pull out the collection chamber, smack it on the ground and clean out the re-claimed solder. if you are using the gun where it is vertical (the tip pointing downwards), you stand a higher chance of clogging up the the tip. my neighbor did that when he borrowed mine.

when that happens, then you have to use the drill bit to clean out the tip.

I try to work so that the gun is either horizontal or at a 45degree angle (which allows the vacuum to work better and pull the solder onto the small, metal plate inside of the chamber that collects the de-soldered solder.
