So I've always been worried about my Hakko 808 desoldering station in that there is no no/off switch or LED indicator that it's on. You have to plug it in and unplug when you are done. Anyways last night (Thursday) I went out to the shop and noticed it was plugged in and I was like "SON OF A B*TCH!!!" Yep the last time I remember using it was Saturday morning...5 days still plugged in! Damn! It worked fine, was still in the stand but it could have caught fire or even started a fire...

Need to figure out a way to add an on/off or at least some sort of indicator that it's on. Even though I was always conscience about it, I still managed to forget.

They're way ahead of you, they discontinued the 808 and the new version has the on/off feature.

Also, take the tip of and clean the barrel. 5 days being on probably oxidized it a ton.

And a longer cord. And a nearly $100 steeper price

Ouch.... I have mentioned it before, and it is probably worth mentioning again... The 808 is great for the field, but is pretty big in the hand. I have been using this Aoueye knock off on my bench for a couple of years now and it is fantastic!

Yep, 808 is field worthy, but on the bench Metcal is the king of desoldering.

I don't use the 808 on the bench anymore, but all of my bench equipment is on a power strip with a master and individual power switches. Best solution I've found.

I have all my bench equipment on a power strip along with the lights.
One switch shuts it all down so I never forget to shut off my iron anymore.

I think I have a clapper kicking around I might use.

That reminds me of when I was looking at a local operator's pin, because they had a question about a repair that they had tried.

....they left a soldering iron plugged into the utility socket inside the pin. It had been on for weeks. They were lucky it didn't start a fire.

    I use one of these.

Belkin Conserve Socket F7C009q Energy-Saving Outlet from Amazon. About $15.

A friend of mine accidentally left his soldering iron on...and then left for the weekend. Ever since then, he made a wind-up timer for it(just hooks up via the electrical socket) and when the time's up, no juice goes to it.
