I prefer GNR to sabbath, maiden and crue. I’d spend money on a toy for GNR but not those other bands. I’m certainly not alone in my preference, given how much more life time (and recent) sales have been for GNR compared to those other bands when looking at a multitude of parameters include album sales and concert tickets.

So I also strolled over to the GnR fan forums. I snapped a few pics of their reaction to the release of the new game. I thought you’d all enjoy it! It’s fun to see another rabid fan forum collide with ours.

Just my guess, but I don’t think JJP calls their mid-tier games an LE because they are actually limited. I think at least in part they are called that because they think it allows a direct comparison with Stern LEs. They are both similarly priced after all, and have a ton of stuff thrown in. I think they both target the same collectors, rather than the traditional take that the JJP LE is akin to a Stern Premium. (Yes I know that Stern LEs have a much lower production count)

Meanwhile the JJP CE is akin to the Stern Super LEs.

I’m not even suggesting I find the comparison valid. Just that it might be the intent.

Quoted from zaphX:

Not for nothin' but POTC is pretty heavy on multiballs and I didn't hear any complaining about that.
All I hear about that game is "MAKE MOAR."

I think anyone reasonable can look at this game and make a simple calculation: (% of time spent in multiball) / (% of time playing)

Other reasonable measures are how hard it is to get into multiball, how many multiballs are there, how long is the default ball saver, how easy is it to add a ball, etc

Without having made the spreadsheet myself, I subjectively feel this game is incredibly high in these parameters, possibly higher than literally any game I can think of. I imagine that’s the feeling many else have.

I’m not trying to be a hater. Most of us are not. As I have genuinely serious interest in purchasing this game, I hope that (a) these things can be changed in settings and (b) the ruleset is not so dependent on the default settings such that changing them would actually make the game less fun.

PS. I own and love POTC. It is indeed in the high range of these parameters, but nowhere close to what seems to be going on in GNR.

Quoted from rai:

hello
what happens to the locked balls when you drain? If you are in multiplayer game do the next player get the balls (lock stealing?)
how does the upper PF feel to play??

The next player automatically starts ball 1 as a multiball on the plunge with those extra locked balls, I can only assume. It’s called Start Game Multiball.

#2993 3 years ago

Fundamentally disagree with the concept of ‘just being supportive’. FYI I’m buying an LE too, but constructive criticism and feedback is good for literally every industry. Our role is not to shield a company from feedback.

#2997 3 years ago
Quoted from BallPin:

Yah but all the people crapping on the game haven't played it. That's the problem.

I haven’t played the game. I’m buying one anyway. I can tell you that point blank: I’m a consumer that wants to hear different opinions before I buy an expensive purchase, especially when I’m not in a position to go out and play the game.

For example, I know ahead of time to be aware of some potential negatives:
- statistically more time in multiball than perhaps any game before it, though this can be changed in code
- a weak plunge into a hard rock game
- overall lack of mechanical toys, though the 6 ball lock is cool

Obviously the honest discussion of positives has clearly won me over. But I actually want a discussion of those negatives before I personally buy a game I’m not in an easy position to play first. Seems like an internet forum of pinball enthusiasts would be a valid place to get this discussion.

Sounds like what people want is to condense the 800 threads for GNR into 2: one for hype and one for broad opinions.

#3098 3 years ago

I paid for the LE today. I’m 100% excited!

Re: multiballs
I intend to change the settings to make the game harder in this regard (nerf the 4 booster multiballs, reduce the add a balls in the song multiballs, set a max on ball saver time). If this makes the game too hard to progress through, I can always make the game set up easier (lower the posts on the outlanes) or make song modes easier to reach, kind of like how some people set up Metallica to make crank it up easier to qualify.

I’m sure a lot of people will be posting their preferred game settings over the next several weeks.

#3105 3 years ago
Quoted from rai:

What's your feeling about the upper PF/locks do you think the SE will feel like it's missing too much??

I honestly don’t think so. An argument can be made that the LE and CE are missing the flow of the SE. It’s all perspective.

#3241 3 years ago
Quoted from zaphX:

Except for Kid MB, Gobstopper MB, Wonkavator MB and Slugworth MB, the first 3 of which are all required to get golden tickets.
Most of which are stackable.
Oh and hitting the Wonka tower when green gives the "dreaded" add-a-ball feature too.

Listen, two things can be true at the same time:
- On default settings, GNR may literally have the most time spent in multiball of any game ever, the highest number of types of multiball, and the highest ratio of number of balls/playfield time on an average game (given the frequency of add a ball).
- GNR is one of the most amazing games ever! I ordered an LE myself!

If you want to defend the game as great, you should! But doing so with invalid comparisons might actually inadvertently hurt people’s impressions of the game or at the least invalidate your opinion. Can’t we just say the game is great even with the multiball? You can even argue it’s great because of it if you want?

Ha! I did this on my AC/DC!

In addition to how awesome the lights are, it looks like there’s smoke plus you added shoot to thrill??!

That looks amazeballs

Quoted from BENETNATH:

For the people not liking the JP2 pics/video and sounds. There is a really nice mod that cleans the whole things.
When coming back to Gnr, a new stream from our prefferred frenchies is available :
The two main streamers are really more Stern's focused, and at the end, they were completely fan of this GnR.
EDIT : you'll be able to see Jack himself

Highly recommend watching from 35:45. That really encapsulates why this game has excited sooo many people. It's pure pinball awesomeness, and I don't even speak French!

Super exclusive ad from the Pinside Marketplace!
#3512 3 years ago
Quoted from Vino:

It’s becoming clear Pinside cannot handle all this pinball goodness at once. Elwin/GNR etc.
It may just self destruct.

Two great games. Two great designers. Pinside demands only one can exist. Welcome to the thunderdome.

#3522 3 years ago

I love most new Stern AND JJP releases. There, I said it. Fight me

#3530 3 years ago
Quoted from delt31:

Jp2, with someone's modified code that injects the movie assets (wink) is not only Stern's best game but one of the best ever. Could be argued as GOAT considering layout, sick toy, theme and rules.

So true. It has:
- innovative layout
- expansive mode-based code with depth and breadth.
- top 3 interactive mechs in pinball with the chomping trex
- best use of captive ball in pinball (for my money)
- great theme integration when updated with lovingly made fan code

#3541 3 years ago
Quoted from iceman44:

And another GREAT pin and worthy of it's ranking. Possibly the most FUN GOAT.
Of course i'm assuming GNR will get the GOAT title soon enough but I'm purty happy with JP, EHOH and GNR.
Great Pin times!

I’m not saying this is what should happen, but given how high the hype was on GNR I think it’s going to more divisive in its ratings than usual and there will be enough people that rate it at 3s to drop it down further than it should. Yes this happens with every great game, but I think on this one it will happen in particular.

I missed out on a CE. Getting the LE instead. And still very happy about it!!

But... you guys that think the CE value will go down are nuts. Most that bought it are not flippers. Sorry but it’s true. Even after it sold out, people here still forget how many rich pinball hobbyists and also GNR fans that are out there and how well hyped that reveal was. Plus, it actually is a unique CE with an extra physical mech + band signatures that will make it hard to simply rerun another Yellow Brick Road GNR in the future with the same hype behind it.

CEs will remain highly valued.
My LE will drop in value.

Such is life. Wish I knew to avoid going thru the distributor but I will for next time.

#3809 3 years ago
Quoted from fooflighter:

First LE I've seen for sale in possession
https://pinside.com/pinball/market/classifieds/ad/104318
Watching this one to see if the market values the immediate possession price hike versus taking on someone else's tax and shipping burden, nothing against the seller, if someone buys it, I guess technically the value of the LE's just went up

So annoying when flippers say they’re just selling it because they are “moving to a new house” or whatever dumb excuse. Just once I’d like to see an ad that says “I am a flipper that is flipping this game. That is why I am selling it. Looking to make a profit.”

Edit: I was wrong about the ad. It’s fair for what he paid in taxes/shipping.

#3811 3 years ago
Quoted from zaphX:

Yeah but where's his profit? The game was $9500 new. He is in Chicago and had to pay sales tax, not sure what that rate is but it looks like maybe 10.25%? That's $10475 plus shipping. Seems legit to me.
Honestly I am tempted to buy it as a placeholder until the CEs ship, not knowing when that will be.

Honestly I did not realize he had to pay tax that high. You are right. Criticism withdrawn.

#3840 3 years ago
Quoted from TaTa:

Totally agree. But I was pushing what I could afford at the asking price. No way was I able to buy one on the secondary market price. I did so because this will never leave my collection and will be the center piece of my collection for a long time

So you were actually able to get a CE for 12.5k with that wanted post? I should have done that then haha

#4084 3 years ago

I admit I buy games for the home and don’t care much about the playfield issues. I am exactly the kind of customer that ensures manufacturers don’t change. At least I admit it

#4354 3 years ago
Quoted from Breger1:

I hear there's a great GNR band forum you can check out

Seems like a good time to send part 2 from the GNR fan forum regarding this pinball machine. They don’t seem to be bothered by the presence or absence of spectrum playfields.

Listen, I want to introduce the importance of yin and yang here.

Yin: I want people screwed over by chipping to make lots of noise. They will help push this industry to doing a better job with manufacturing. Who doesn’t want perfect playfields? Please continue to make noise.

Yang: I personally will continue to buy NIB. I’m in for a GNR LE and can’t wait. I will continue to buy NIB because I get excited about the newest toy like I’m a 10 year old kid again. Yes it would be nice if I can guarantee the highest resale value of my pin, but if I can’t that’s not the end of the world for me and I’ll still enjoy my game. Though I’d be annoyed too.

I’m betting most reasonable people hold both opinions at once.

#4453 3 years ago

“ As designer of one of the best-selling pinball games ever (Jersey Jack’s Pirates of the Caribbean), Meunier, a musician himself, is clear on the early goals he set in collaborating with Slash on the new Guns N’ Roses table.”

Umm love Eric’s games but that first line is fake news

#4686 3 years ago
Quoted from PinballGalore:

I called my bank and took a loan the next morning. I realized with the CE I couldn’t have the luxury of time-consuming consideration or procrastination. But I feel I made the right move that day after all so I couldn’t be happier. Since I ALWAYS have to wait for a game I purchased because I always have to ship and import them in, the wait has become an integral part of ownership and collecting - and could even be as exciting as the moment the game does arrive. I enjoy the anticipation and the daily online read as much as I do playing these games once they arrive

I know you’ll appreciate this shokel. For those that don’t know, this is a common Israeli gesture that means ‘wait’. Seems like a gesture we can all learn.

Got to luv how these threads go with turning into arguments over which JJP is better for whatever reason. Not that different than other threads with no new news and people just want to hang out.

It’s well known that all new JJP game threads turn into a battle over the Hobbit

#4992 3 years ago
Quoted from zaphX:

I am!
I buy these things for joy, not headaches. The second the headaches outweigh the joy, I'm out on pinball. So far the equation is working for me.
Can't wait for my GNR CE!

I’m with you. I’ve bought two games - JJP POTC and Stern JP. I have GNR ordered as my 3rd. I read pinside daily like the rest of you nuts. But for some reason I have never looked down at my playfields for pooling and chipping. Is it there? It might be. I still have no plans to find out yet remain quite happy.

I don’t mean to take away from those who care about it, which is totally understandable.
