Is there any must have mods out there?

PinSound
EnerGI Maestro
LED OCD
Upgraded magnet board
ColorDMD
Stronger flipper coils (if you like your game steep or have issues w going up the G ramp)

Never saw that cig mod .

Cig does not light up. Glued to a key fob so any placement is easy.

Just did this today. Some times it’s the small things . Lol.

Quoted from boogies:

I recently picked up a GnR, it's an awesome machine. I'vd been changing some of the LEDs and got it looking great (to my taste).
I plan to get the pinSound and an Alt Backglass, but I'm holding off a few weeks.
Is there any must have mods out there?

I made 17 changes to the original stock machine (not counting leds)
1 - Colordmd
2 - CPR Backglass
3 - Vampire glass
4 - Lit up "Welcome to the jungle" plastic (all new plastics)
5 - Lit up snake green
6 - powdercoated wire forms in red and yellow
7 - side blades with AFD skull faces
8 - Slash figure in top mini orbit
9 - Custom side rails with GNR logo etched
10 - Transparent pop bumper body and caps with color changing leds
11 - Clearcoated playfield
12 - Titan rubbers throughout
13 - Cliffy on Axl hole
14 - Pinsound and upgraded speakers
15 - New G Ramp (original commonly broken)
16 - New cabinet decals
17 - GLM upgraded magnet board

Any of those 17 could be "must have" depending on condition of your machine

Any way to get those custom side rails in the US?

They were done by a company called Railways in Australia. Not sure if shipping to the USA is an option

Noticed a whole circuit of lights was out today. Cant find any reference in the manual to where they are controlled from.

Namely the Right orbit Skull with slash hat. Its in series with a bunch of hard to reach lamps under the shooter lane band picture, well behind the drop targets.

Same goes for the left side equivalent. None of the various diagnostic tests can i figure out how to activste those.

First, get a meter out and check for continuity in those GI lamps; check at the pins in the backbox, then the first lamp in the string. Hopefully its just a bad/burnt pin, or hopefully even better, just a loose connection.

If no continuity, find the loose/knocked off wire and resolder it.

If you have continuity, you have two options...

Start removing stuff from the surface to get to the bulbs and replace them with QUALITY new ones. If you go that far, you might as well shop the game. I did mine a couple years back, and it wasn't too bad, took a couple hours. I thought it was impossible that a bunch of GI bulbs could be bad, but if the game was routed before, they very well could be.

or, one I wouldn't recommend, pull the staples and replace the bulbs that way...Good ol' stapled down DE GI.

Check the fuses too that control the GI. There’s a fuse reference chart towards the front of the manual that tells you which ones.

What im still wondering is why these lights seem to have no reference in the manual.

I did check the fuses and are fine. Ran out of time to fully trace the wiring, but i hope its safe to assume they likely are on the same circuit.

Anyone have a GnR apart that can find where theae end up on the wiring and in the backboard. Ill get back down there and folow some wires later

I think it a issue with CN-8 on power supply, 8 wires for GI upper right. Moles connector or male pins possibly

#2170 3 years ago

Yep... loose wire. Massaged the C8 connector. Its seen better days but that got the missing lights back on

Thanks forwveryones input, eventually ill replace the connector

Did any of these machines come factory with a headphone Jack and external volume control in the lower right?

I just grabbed a machine that came with a prototype translite and has external headphone Jack and volume buttons and data East labeled PCB in the cabinet for headphone interface. What’s the story with this?

#2172 3 years ago

I know some of them did. I had a German delivered game at one stage that had the headphone jack and volume control on the front.

Hi- I was hoping someone may have run into this before. When the ball drains, it is taking awhile for the next ball up to get kicked into the shooter lane. Does anyone have any idea what needs to be adjusted to correct this?

Been there, fixed that, thanks to @NPO’s detective work.

See thread below. Fix described in post 14. (Bad switch for the vertical solenoid that kicks the ball into the shooter lane.)

I’m going to be getting a color dmd for my DE GNR. I’m curious which type to get LCD or LED. Any suggestions from current owners? Thanks.

Quoted from loanguy7171973:

If you use the LCD, you’ll need to modify your speaker panel (cutting off one of the 6 studs on the back) and you’ll want to drill new mounting holes in the flanges on the ColorDMD so it mounts slightly lower than it would using the original holes, unless ColorDMD has changed where they position those holes in the 5 years since I installed mine. (Originally it would mount where you have essentially no clearance between the top of the ColorDMD assembly and the lightboard above it.)

Neither are big deals, and I like the look of the LCD vs LED, but it’s totally personal preference. Just be aware of the above if you do go LCD.

#2184 2 years ago

Agree with above, it’s personal preference. I got the LCD. I like the XL Dots version and LCD look. My brother has a DE Star Wars and got the LED. It also looks great

Not many videos of data east GnR pinball, so I filmed a game last night and blew it up!! 8.1b , 2 riot wizard modes! Lots of good action, and decent playing (my style anyway). I’ve owned this game for 3yrs now, (also know it’s previous owners since 2000) it’s in mint condition!! I think I have a flasher issue, once in a while the left jackpot ramp flashes with the back glass flashers . I completed a gilby rolls (on 2nd attempt) and doubled it in this video . Also. A color dmd is a must have imo !!

There’s a set of decals you can get for the drops.

Nice video, don't know how you have it setup but there's no way I can backhand the G ramp on my game. Did you do anything to the flipper coils for that strength?

#2190 2 years ago
Quoted from Stebel:

I made a them, well, the wife made them at her work (very easy, just need decent sticker paper) then used clear coat over them .

I’ve never done any work on my flipper coils, but I’m pretty the guy that owned it before had them rebuilt . Definitely the shooter coil was customized to not let balls pile up in the lane it happens in the video , but due to custom coil they all get shot up some how !!
Games all about backhand shots .

I unsuccessfully installed a Pinsound board. I heard a small pop (like a fuse) from the backbox and now ithe game doesn't boot. I checked all the fuses and they metered OK. The Rottendog MPU has no blanking LED (and no metered voltage at the test point) . Also the PIA light stays on (not sure if it is supposed to)

Admittedly, I had unplugged my colordmd ribbon cable (to give it more slack) and replugged it in backwards while the machine was off (getting the pinsound put in)

The Rottendog MPU is testing:
5V = 4.97
28V = 17.75
Blanking = 0

Anybody have a similar experience, or an idea of what I should check next?

iam thinking on selling my GnR machine. what's a fair price to ask for? I would say it's in really nice condition. very little play . playfield really nice shape. about a 8.5 to 9.

Quoted from gregh43:

iam thinking on selling my GnR machine. what's a fair price to ask for?

First question: Does it have the original topper included? Huge difference in value either way.
And fix: Change out your rubbers ASAP.

No topper: maybe high $4000's to low $5000's.
Original topper included: add $500-$750

I own one as well. It's in exceptional condition. I have JJP's GnR's LE coming in 1-2 months(?). I'm not sure I want to sell my DE GNRs. It sits proudly next to Tommy

#2198 2 years ago

Thanks Kerry . iam envious your getting the JJP LE Version. Great Choice. I dont have a topper for it. never had one when I purchased it. I have owned the machine for 12+ years. it does have a new rubber kit on it. I went with the white instead of the black. a friend suggested using white rubbers . he thought with the black it would create more dust and make the playfield really dirty fast and would be harder to clean it off the playfield . I can switch them out. which company has a GnR rubber kit? thanks

#2199 2 years ago

Translucent rubber I found works best on this game. A lot less dirt, & the light shines through them pretty good.

That's a great idea with the Duff ball. I didn't like to use these "name" balls on the game as they seem lighter and you can't really see the names when moving around during game play. Perfect place for it!
