Quoted from jalkelly:

Anyone have recommendations on where to buy ammo online? Only looking for 9mm at this time and the few sites I’ve checked have been tapped out despite the really expensive loads.
Also interested in picking up a bunch of paper targets for the range. What do you guys suggest?

https://azfirearms.com

Local, very well stocked.
Go there or order online.
Also the owner and some of the staff are members of the Pinball community.
Good place.
Hit me up with a PM and I will send you the pinside account name of a friend there.

EDIT: Just looked at the site and looks like they haven’t updated it. I know the have been slammed the last week or so, but they do have stock.

My dad gave me one of the old bolt action 22 longs that I learned to shoot with when I was a kid.
The thing had just been sitting under his bed for the last 30 years and had a ton of flash rust on it.
Just finished cleaning it up.
Pretty happy with how it turned out.
Here’s a before and after.

Quoted from Fulltilt:

That's excellent! What was your technique?

0000 steel wool and WD40.
Lightly rub while lubricated with WD40.
Clean regularly while your doing this so you’re not rubbing rust particles across the blueing and scratching it.
Don’t use too much pressure as your only trying to knock off the rust and not rub off the blueing.

One of my pinball buddies out here is a gunsmith and this was the method he suggested. Worked really well.

#1132 3 years ago

Looking forward to taking it out. As I mentioned it’s a rifle that my dad taught us to shoot with when we were kids. My kids are 9 and 11 and have started to express a little interest when they see me cleaning things.

Durring stay at home orders we have been clearing part of our lot that was a fire hazard. Cleared about an acre and I’m planning on building an archery range for my compound bow and figured I could also use air rifles. We’re on 5 acres and too close to neighbors to shoot, but shooting a bow and air rifles would be fine. Although acasionally I do fire off a round of snake shot when we get a rattle snake in the front courtyard.
I figure teach them the basic safety stuff at home with air rifles and when they are comfortable with that we can take them to the range.

Quoted from JodyG:

That is a pretty rare one...I am a big fan of 3rd gen S&W's, and I would love to happen across one of those some day. 1006, 4506 and 3913 are on my list to own some day when I come across them. Currently have a 4006, 5906, 4040PD, 4053
[quoted image]

I acquired it from my father who bought it NIB I'm guessing in the early 90s (maybe earlier).
He purchased it originally to use as a sidearm when he was hunting in the wilderness.
Basically he wanted something with stoping power in the event of a bear attack or something similar.
Needless to say it did not get used much before I got it, other than a few times at the range.

#1163 3 years ago
Quoted from JodyG:

Pay attention to the ammo you buy...a lot of factory 10mm ammo is no more powerful than 40 S&W. Paul Harrell has a video showing his findings on this:
Fast forward to 5:12 if you don't want to see the boring part.
And if you have not watched Harrell videos before, I apologize in advance for the the rabbit hole I am sending you down, and for the productivity hit your day is about to have.

Thats actually really interesting to see that kind of disparity on factory loaded ammo.
Off to watch the 9mm vs .357 magnum video next.

Thanks guys! Ridiculous part is..... these aren't the only safes, lol. Just about everything in the pic is original - USMC used Gulf War Barretts, Major Dick Culver's M40, my sniper platoon's XM3 we used in Fallujah, etc. It would be awesome to have them on display instead of tucked away in safes. Picked up a vintage 1959 Browning A5 12 gauge yesterday.
My dad bought one of these new in 1962 with money he had saved up from his paper route (and he still has it).
My dads A5 was the first shotgun I had ever fired. We’ve shot a ton of clays with it when I was a kid and taken it out for Dove season quite a few times.
I have a newer A5 I currently use, but saw this for $550 and got all nostalgic and picked it up.

Quoted from EJS:

Hopefully O/U or any shotguns aren’t hard to find on the local level?

Buying new is no problem.
Finding a good price on nice used or vintage is a little harder.

That said, it depends on what sort of shop you go to. Some seem to specialize in tactical, home defense and sporting.
Hunting rifles and shotguns seem a bit less popular out here so not as much of a selection (especially used). Over Unders is a pretty specific crowd and not something that flys off the shelves so the selection can be limited (depending on the shop).

#1191 3 years ago
Quoted from golfingdad1:

Is it against the rules to see if anyone has a nice over under 12ga , maybe like a Browning Citori they want to let go ?

BTW, I was at Sportsman’s Warehouse yesterday picking up a few things.
I don’t know if you guys have those down in Tuscon or not, but they have a really good selection of new over unders. Benelli, Beretta, Browning etc. Much better selection than most of the other shops I’ve seen.

Quoted from golfingdad1:

So I went that route...
Went in , applied , never heard back from shop, then I get a survey to ask how I liked my new gun.....
Are they Fn kidding me , I dont even have it.
Called the manager , He was a total Prick...
I siad you guy's never let me know, he says well we never heard back about application, I say has it been 30 days , he says would you like me to count back the days For you. I say no thanks , so how does this work ?
He says your asking me to commit a crime by selling it to you ? I say, excuse me , all I asked was , How does this work then ? Then I said, never mind I dont want to buy a gun from a prick like you .......

Arizona doesn’t have a 30 day waiting period. That guy has no idea what he’s talking about. Sound like he just moved here from California and doesn’t understand how it works here.

You should be able go into a store, they verify your ID right then and there and you walk out with your gun.

Quoted from golfingdad1:

What do you guys think. Thanks, Dork .
Nice local private sale . A little high for my budget , but I also see where the market is going .
[quoted image]

I really like Browning’s in general.
Lovely gun for shooting clays, dove etc.

If you go the over under route, you should experiment with different chokes for each barrel.
For instance whichever barrel you have set up to fire first use something like an improved cylinder choke so the your shot pattern is tighter close up. Then have the second barrel set up with either a modified or full choke so your patter is tighter further out.
If you shoot skeet it works out really well as the clays are flying away from you and the second clay will be at a further distance. Fun to experiment and see what combination of chokes works best for how you shoot.

#1205 3 years ago

Picked up a used Benelli 828U.
The gun itself is in really nice shape, but I swear the previous owner never cleaned it.
The barrel is really clean because it’s chrome plated, but the chokes were a mess. They are cleaning up nicely though.

Quoted from Hougie:

The problem with .556 is that it is not legal in Indiana. Otherwise, we would be all set. I also have a .308 but it would kick too much for him right now. I want him to not be intimidated by the recoil.

I was having this very discussion this evening with my uncle who is an instructor for apprentice hunters. My son is also 9 (almost 10) and I had a couple concerns I was discussing with my uncle.
We discussed the recoil issue and he brought up the topic of mercury recoil suppressors. I’ve never used one of these before, but the science behind it is basic weight displacement and makes a lot of sense to me.

http://www.mercuryrecoil.com/

The second issue we discussed was that because my son is 9 his arms are not long enough to properly shoulder most of my rifles. I have a bolt action model 70 Winchester .308 that my dad started me hunting with when I was 11. It’s a light weight pack gun that’s quite compact. The stock is still a bit to big for my son and he has trouble shouldering it properly where he can barely get the tip of his finger on the trigger, so I haven’t had him shoot it yet. I’m going to try buying a second stock for it and having my gunsmith buddy cut it down to fit it for my boy and while he does install a mercury recoil suppressors in it and a heavy recoil pad.

Stopped by the local shop in town on the way home from work today and picked up a really nice vintage Browning B-80. Looked up the serial number on Brownings website and this one was made in 1980.
These were a pretty short lived model in the early to mid 80s that they only made for 7 or 8 years. It’s basically the same shotgun (with minor modifications) as the Beretta 300-303 series that was contract built by Beretta for Browning.
Don’t think it been used very much as it’s remarkably clean. The only issue is that the barrel is chambered for 3 inch mags only and does not have removable chokes.
Found a NOS barrel on gunbroker that’s chambered in 2 3/4 with invector chokes for $150 and jumped on it. The new barrel should make this a pretty sweet set up for clays or dove.

Just a heads up for any of the local Arizona people that are interested.
It looks like the Crossroads of the West gun show is happening this weekend.

https://www.crossroadsgunshows.com/events/

My understanding from talking to a local shop owner is that the show is 100% outdoors due to Covid and they will not be having tables inside the large tents or halls.
Also, tables are supposed to be more spread out.

Looks like the show on the 19th-20th in Queen Creek is still a go as well.

Anyhow, just posting this here for anyone that’s interested that was not aware.
Be safe.

Bought my daughter a Ruger 10/22 and her and I customized it together a couple nights ago.
Went with a purple Hogue stock. She’s 12 and wanted to make it a bit more feminine.
Put a bipod, Bushnell scope with raised see through scope mounts so she can use either the scope or iron sights.
I’ll sight it in at some point in the next week or two. From there we will see if she needs cheek riser or not.
She was pretty excited about it.

One thing I really like about Ruger products is all the aftermarket stuff you can do to them. I bought my son (who’s 10) one at the same time and he and I did his up with a kit to make it like a little AR. Added a $39 red dot optic (which is surprisingly accurate for the price) and a flash hider.
Fun little shooter that’s a fraction the cost to take out and plink with than dads AR.

My next Ruger is going to be a Mark 4 target pistol for the wife. She really likes my Mark 2 and wants one of her own.
Been looking for a purple one (her favorite color), but they are really hard to find right now. Amazing how hard to find some current production models are at the time. I am hoping that will change in the coming months.

Quoted from s1500:

I should have clarified my question. I was looking for no-frills .380 ammo for shooting paper targets. I have the firearms(911 and bodyguard), just no boring ammo to fire it with, heh. Still wanna break in the 911.
Heck, I'm still sitting on a few hundred rounds of 22LR I bought years ago that came free with my Calico.

What are the laws like in your state for shipping ammo?
Stores here have gotten to the point where they are depleted of the simplest things like 22 long and 12 gauge target loads.
I’ve been ordering online and having it shipped to the house.
Even places like Walmart, which is the cheapest place by the house to buy shotgun shells for shooting clays sells out in a day lately.

#1283 3 years ago
Quoted from golfingdad1:

I can't find any ammo online at Walmart, so how do you order it to the house?

Lately I just go on gunbroker and see who’s got the cheapest prices on what I need and order it there.

#1287 3 years ago
Quoted from EJS:

Any reasonable prices there?
Gunbroker and Armslist seems like mostly flippers to resell at a higher price.
I’m out of the ammo game for now since I reload and stocked up.
Even if you don’t reload I recommend checking out Powder Valley’s website they have an excellent write up about the shortage of primers for both reloaded and ammo manufacturing. That seems to be the limiting factor for production.

Armslist very recently changed their site so that you have to pay a monthly subscription, so I basically stopped looking at stuff there.
Gunbroaker requires a little bit more digging on the site. Yes, there’s plenty of people there that are capitalizing on the current situation, but there’s still some stuff on there at what I would consider rational prices for today.

Speaking of compact 45s, I picked this up this week for my birthday.
I turned 45 a couple days ago and it seemed like the appropriate thing to do.
Went down to one of the local shops thats owned by a guy in the pinball community and this was in the used case (well, barely used).
Gave me a great deal on it.
One of the shop employees who I get along with pretty well said “If this is what you get for your birthday when you turn 45, I can’t wait to see what you get when you turn 50”. Lol

[quoted image]

Awesome!
It’s really hit and miss right now up here.
The Wallmart up here in Cave Creek stocks at night and if you dont go early in the morning the shelves are empty before noon. We’re really close to Ben Avery Shooting facility and there’s a lot of BLM land up here (public land) where people dove and quail hunt so they sell out quick.
Couple that with all the hoarding that’s going on and it’s been really hard.

My parents and my brother are driving out after Christmas and want to spend a couple days out in the desert breaking clays.
Took me four trips and three different stores to get a bunch for when they come out. In normal times we would just stop and buy some on the way out to go shooting. Now a days you have to prior plan and buy them way in advance.

Beautiful shotguns BTW!!!

#1299 3 years ago
Quoted from golfingdad1:

Walmart had signs limiting purchases to 2 boxes.
It was 7 am, I loaded it all up and the gal at the regiser didn't say anything, so I rolled with it .

Oh snap.
I’ll be pissed if they start limiting it here.
If we go out for a full day of shooting clays we shoot through 300-500 shells easy if there’s a group of people. And that’s mixing it up with rifle and handgun target shooting.
Two boxes is no where near enough for a day out with a group of people.

My hopes is that come January/February things get back to some kind of normal and people stop hoarding.

#1307 3 years ago

My parents are in town and wanted to go break some clays in the desert.
My son friggin loves operating the pigeon launcher. I think he has more fun operating it then he does actually shooting. He loves to throw one out there just as you finish reloading to see if he can sneak one by you or not. Grandpa (my dad) shot clays for the first time in a few few years and did pretty darn good for being all rusty and dusty.
Yes, we brought a trash can and rake and cleaned up all the shells.
Always go home with more trash then you brought when shooting on public land.
Fun day with the family for sure.

I normally don’t do that much distance shooting beyond a few hundred yards. Mostly bolt action hunting rifles and such like Winchester model 70s.
My dad has been collecting pre 64 model 70s for more than 40 years and I recently picked up on adding to the collection where he left off trying to acquire the calibers he never found.
I really enjoy seeing your posts as what you collect is really interesting stuff thats a little out of my wheelhouse but really neat stuff.

Thanks! I enjoy sharing these awesome pieces of history! Here's some of my archaic firearms from the 1300's, 1400's and 1500's. These represent the genesis and early progression of firearms; without these, this forum thread wouldn't exist. The small handgonnes in the photo are the most important, they were used in the Battle of Aljubarrota on August 14, 1385. The only older European firearm (currently known to still exist) is the Loschult Gun, which was made in the 1330's.

Thought I would share one of my recent auction purchases.
Pre 64 model 70 Winchester chambered in 22 hornet. According to Roger Rule’s book on pre 64 model 70 Winchesters, this one was made in 1952.
My dad has been collecting pre 64 model 70s for more than 40 years and I’ve started filling in the collection with calibers he never found. 22 hornet is one of the scarcer calibers in the series, although there are some that are really friggin rare.
This one is basically a small caliber high velocity varmint rifle.
It’s in beautiful shape.
Was really happy to get it.

Do you use a compound bow? I've only got a crossbow and wondered how those Yellow Jacket targets might do with a crossbow.

Mostly I use a Mathews compound bow set to 50lbs. Although recently I picked up a pretty nice recurve bow, which I’m not very good with yet.

Walnut Grips
Redfield 2.5X scope EER
My own scope mount I machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. B-Square now makes a much lighter version.
Bench resting at 25 yards I was able to hit staples !!!
I was a a gun range in San Antonio TX 1983. They had a rack of 4 targets on cardboard. Held on by regular staples. After I was done shooting my .357 I got out this Ruger. shot out the bullseyes.. And the last 3 shots took out the staples holding the top edge of the top 2 targets. Then a cease fire/target check was called. The range master offered to put up a fresh rack of targets since the top two came down. I told him they went down. He brought back the rack and asked where my 22 carbine was. I opened my gun case containing the Ruger and Colt Python.

Thought I would share one of my recent auction purchases.
It’s a early 90s Browning Citori that comes with extra barrels chambered in 410 gauge, 28 gauge, 20 gauge and 12 gauge.
Everything is numbers matching and came in a period correct browning hard case.

Although I do have extra barrels for some of my other shotguns, I’ve never really owned a set like this before.
One person told me that these are used for a certain regiment of sheet, where you go shoot 400 shells in a day (100 shells with each gauge). Maybe, I’m not really sure.
I bought it because I’m a sucker for really nice Brownings. Also because I thought it would be perfect for the kids to gradually work them up from 410-28-20-12.
I think it can serve multiple functions as well like 20 or 12 for dove, 410 or 28 for quail when your flushing them without dogs etc.
Anyhow, pretty excited about it.
It’s a really neat set that I feel like I can hand down to my kids as a heirloom.

Stopped by one of the local shops on the way to the office this morning.
Picked up another Ruger single six this morning that I thought was a pretty fair deal.
Haven’t checked the serial number on the Ruger website yet, but I think it’s from the 70s. Still had the original box and papers as well as the 22 mag cylinder.
Good plinker for the kids because it limits how fast they burn up rounds and it’s fun to shoot.

Quoted from bob_e:

What caliber gun should be used on an Easter Egg hunt? Asking for a friend.

It depends on if you plan on shooting them in the air, or on the ground.
On the ground I would recommend a small rim fire caliber like a 22 long. A lot of hunters tend to use a larger than necessary gun while hunting. Smaller caliber ensures that you damage the least amount of edible material, assuming you make a well placed shot.
If you plan on shooting them in the air, use a 12 gauge. Some might recommend a smaller gauge like 16, 20, 28 or even 410 because of the pattern it puts out. I however subscribe to the belief that whatever a smaller gauge can do, a 12 gauge can do and do it better.

Quoted from boscokid:

Hey guys, anybody feel like looking at these low resolution photos and seeing if anything can be identified? Sorry - this is all I have for now.
Wife's uncle passed away and this was found in his attic - cousin settling the estate wants nothing to do with these but wasn't really sure what her next step should be. I knew the guy for 30 years and never knew him to fire a weapon, so not sure if these were more curios to him than usable guns. His BIL was a retired Lowell, MA detective so maybe the matching revolvers were service weapons?
I'm going up there over 4th of July so I can probably give them a good inspection and get better pics if needed. Not really interested in doing FFL transfers on a bunch of junk guns and I think we can agree the Raven .25 likely not even worth it
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

I’ll give it a shot on the ones I can figure out.
Looks like mostly cheaper guns though.

There’s a few things that are ok.
The revolver in the last photo I’m guessing is a Smith & Wesson 38 Special. That’s a fine gun if so. Don’t know what the others are in that photo.

Second to last photo looks like an older Red Ridder BB gun. Not sure what the lever action is, but might be worth checking out.
Looks like there’s a third rifle in a soft case as well?

Third to last photo has a couple single barrel shotguns. Most likely those are worth very little.
Don’t know what the other rifles are from that photo.

4th photo from the bottom has another Smith & Wesson revolver that’s probably good. The semi auto pistol might be a Browning Buck Mark 22? If so, that’s a great target pistol (especially for starting out kids).
Not sure on the older revolver.

The raven is a cheap little 25 automatic that was produced in mass. That said, it’s still worth like $150-$200 in this day and age. At least this one is not the cheap black finish (which is actually paint rather than blueing) and slightly better than the normal black one.

I don’t know anything about older revolvers. Maybe someone else can chime in on the ones in the briefcase.

The first photo looks like it has a couple keepers. The lever action and the pump shotgun might be ok depending on what they are.

#1476 2 years ago
Quoted from boscokid:

Thanks for looking. I dont hunt so really only hoping to get a decent .38 and Remington or Winchester shotgun out of this

Yeah, if you’re just looking to pick out a couple for plinking or home defense, I would go with one of those Smith & Wessons.
I’m guessing they are both 38 specials?, But the one in the photo with other handguns might be a larger caliber.
The pump shotgun isn’t really ideal for home defense, but would get the job done.
Looks like it’s going to have at least a 28 inch barrel on it and more of a bird gun.

Feeling a little discouraged about the pinball hobby after following the Banning auction the last couple days. Since I wasn’t spending my hobby money in the auction, decided to go on Gunbroaker for some “retail therapy”.

Ordered the newest version of the CZ Scorpion. I already have an EVO 3 S1 and really enjoy taking it out, so went ahead and ordered the EVO 3 S2.
Best price I found was $1,149.99 with no CC fees. Came out to $1268.94 after shipping and tax.

Should be fun to take out the dueling tree with both of them.
Now just need to decide how I want to accessorize it.

Nice work coindork. Seeing those photos reminds me of my dad and his friends who in retrospect were unbelievably kind to a dopey kid. We lived in the country and they would occasionally come out to shoot when the old man wasn’t home. They never failed to allow me to watch and participate with free coaching when needed. Good days….

Yeah it’s pretty good stuff taking the kids out.
That’s how it was done for me as well and it’s kind of like passing the torch.
Perhaps the funniest thing that happened yesterday was there were a couple half shot up pumpkins left out there by somebody a day or so earlier. Needless to say the kids thought it was really funny to shoot at a pumpkin and send pieces of it flying. My son was about halfway through a magazine and a chipmunk ran out and stood on top of a pumpkin and started eating it. My son asked “what should I do”. I said do whatever you want to do and he said “I don’t want to shoot him”. I said “well at least shoot the pumpkin under him and see if he jumps”.
He immediately put a round though the pumpkin sending pieces of it flying and the chipmunk didn’t so much as flinch. We laughed about that and then fired a second round into the pumpkin and the chipmunk took off like a bat out of hell. We laughed even harder at that. Good times.

So, what do you guys think, which rifle in that photo is the raffle rifle and which one is Carlos Hathcock's actual Vietnam War issued M70 rifle? Post your guesses here, the correct answer will be revealed this weekend! I still can't believe we were able to get the raffle rifle photographed with Hathcock's actual war used rifle!!

I vote the one on the bottom as well.

Seems more likely to my novice eye to have been used in the field.

I should thow in another question and since it's a matter of subjectivity there is no wrong answer. Cast the history and provenance of both rifles aside, which one captures your eye the most? Which one would you rather see on your wall or in your gun safe?
For me it's a tough choice, I like both types of these M70 sniper rifles, it would pretty much come to a coin flip! How about you guys, which rifle is subjectively more appealing to you?

I’m a sucker for nice checkering on a stock, so I would pick the top one.

Quoted from USMCSGT0331:

No real reason, since the scope slides back and forth in it's mounts. When the rifle is fired, the scope slides forwards and the sniper has to pull the scope back to he point of eye relief. There's 2 small stoping blocks on the main tube that can be slid up and down the tube, then tightened in place where the sniper wants them. One block is behind the front scope ring, the other is in front of that same scope ring.
The one in the rear will stop the scopes forward movement during recoil (civilian scopes actually have a small spring between this block and the front scope ring to automatically bounce the scope back into postition). The one in the front prevents rearward movement of the scope when the sniper pulls it back into position after taking a shot. This front block sets the sniper's eye relief.
So, each rifle has it's scope set to the sniper that was using that rifle. Since we're all built physically differently, we will all have different eye relief with these scopes and will set them accordingly. For example, a larger person might have the scope further forward to accommodate a longer neck. A person of a smaller stature might have the opposite scope setting and will pull the ocular lens back closer to the rear of the rifle.
I'm terrible at explaining things, so I hope some of this makes sense. These old external adjustment Unertls are very interesting scopes and were cutting edge optics back in the 1940's. There might be some videos on YouTube that shows the proper use and set up for these scope, I recommend doing a search on there to see if there are any good instructional videos. Here's a great photo of one of these USMC Unertl 8x scopes mounted on an M1903A1 sniper rifle. If you read my lengthy description of how the scope is used while observing the various pieces of the Unertl in this photo, it might make more sense. My apologies if I've absolutely failed to convey anything useful. If that's the case, please find a good video of these scopes on YouTube, that should help clear things up.

No, I think you did a pretty good job explaining it.

Quoted from USMCSGT0331:

I can definitely see where you're coming from with this! The top rifle has that good old hand checkering from back in the day, none of that later cheap mass produced pressed checkering crap!

Yeah, that comes from my affinity for old bolt action hunting rifles and shotguns. My dad and I collect pre 64 model 70 Winchesters and the checkering reminds me of those. I know what you mean about pressed checkering. Not only does it not look as good. It doesn’t feel as good in your hands.

Any recommendations on a good clay launcher? It won't get used a whole lot but I would like something decent. Cheap is fine too if it does a good job.

I have one of these and love it.
https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/champion-targets-wheelybird-20-electric-trap-thrower?ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=Shop%7CGeneric%7CAllProducts%7CHigh%7CSSCCatchAll&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh-_dyJPI9AIVxB6tBh2Gjw4HEAQYAiABEgJHRPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I bought and extra car battery that we make sure is charged up before we go out.
The cool thing about it is that you can launch the clays with a foot pedal or a remote. With the foot pedal you can take that thing out and shoot solo, which is tough to do with a manual thrower.

Cheap spring loaded manual throwers are also fine, but you get tired after a while of always cocking them, loading the clays etc.
We bring one along just in case that battery dies or something like that.

We always bring a few hand throwers to mix it up as well.
Can’t go wrong with those.

Quoted from USMCSGT0331:

Do you guys collect any pre-64 Model 70's or do you have a focus for your collection?

My father bought the first one before I was born and started picking them up casually at shops over the years. When he started he was buying them for use as functional hunting rifles. He has a 30-06 that is pretty much his go to deer rifle. He started buying them as they would come his way. As I got older and had more discretionary income I started collecting them as well and filling in the calibers my dad was never able to find. There’s a few calibers we don’t have like .300 H&H, .375 H&H etc. Mostly the larger caliber rounds for exotic game and a few of the oddball smaller calibers that are varmint rounds are the ones we’re missing. I bid on them on gunbroaker from time to time and occasionally pick up a new one. I keep getting my ass handed to me every time I bid on an H&H though. I try to buy original guns that haven’t been molested over the years, which isn’t always easy.
So far we have the following:

.22 Horner
.243 WIN.
.257 Roberts
.257 Roberts (super grade)
.270 WIN (we have two of these)
.308 WIN.
.30-06 (we have three of these)
.300 WIN. MAGNUM

Here’s an interesting group of pre 64 stocks I bought recently.
They were clearly taken off complete rifles, but don’t look like they were ever used. I was really happy to get them because over the years a lot of rifles had the stocks cut to add a recoil pad. I try to make them as original as possible and if I do things like mount optics, try to find period correct hardware and scope.
Anyhow, fun stuff and a cool thing to do with my dad.

Coindork, here's some photos of my 2 original USMC M70 sporters. All of the USMC M70 sniper rifles started out in this configuration, they were then taken apart and rebuilt into sniper configuration. Some sniper rifles were put into the heavy marksman stocks, while others had the original sporter stock modified. Since the factory Winchester medium-heavy barrels were a larger diameter than the sporter barrels, the barrel channel in these sporter stocks needed to be enlarged to fit the new sniper barrel.

I really like the barrel stamp “.30GOV’T06”.
All three of mine are stamped “30-06 SPRG”
I’ve seen them for sale where it’s stamped “GOV’T” and those seem to pop up much less often.

Thank you Sir...
With the limited #s and rarity I thought it would have a higher price on them.

There’s a lot of different Browing shotgun models that they only make for a few years and then discontinue and move on to something else or a new variant and rename them. As you know, I collect the semi autos and you see this a lot with them as well. They tend to sell for a little less than NIB price on the secondary market, but hold their price pretty well from there on out. With the over unders it’s the higher grade ones that bring a lot of money. Things with higher quality (grade) wood and engraving etc.
Look up the prices on something like a Diana grade over under. Pricey little beast, but really beautiful.

On a side note the kids asked Santa to get me a new gun for Christmas.
Picked this up over the weekend Kel-Tec SUB-2000 in 9mm.
Fun little backpacking gun that uses Glock mags.
The wife is going to wrap it up and put it under the tree Christmas morning with a card on it that says from Santa.
Can’t wait to unwrap and and act surprised and say something like “I wonder how he knew?”

One of my employees picked up two Arisaka rifles at an estate sale over the weekend. The one with the folding wire monopod (longer of the two rifles) has the imperial seal (Chrysanthemum flower) intact. The shorter one has it ground off. Wound up buying them both off him and very happy with the pair.

Thanks, that site is really useful and just send me down a rabbit hole.
It looks like the longer rifle (type 99) is Nagoya Arsenal series 4.
The shorter one is a type 38 and if I’m reading it correctly is also Nagoya. Looks like it’s probably series 6? The stamp is a little uneven, but that’s what it looks closest to.

Quoted from USMCSGT0331:

I just purchased this at an auction for a whopping $40 and it's by far the strangest M40 stock I've ever seen! It's a real M40 stock and has all the correct characteristics, but I have no idea who did the modifications. It's actually pretty stable holding it while standing, but the vertical foregrip is too far forward and would have better ergonomics if it were moved back an inch or two.
I opened up the recoil lug inlet bedding just enough to drop in Culver's M40 barreled action:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Here's a closeup of the vertical foregrip:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Closeup of the butt modification:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
The butt now has a Pachmayr White Line recoil pad, instead of an aluminum 40x buttplate. The and of the stock was sanded and reshaped, so the original stamps underneath the 40x buttplate are gone:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
The holes on the left side of the foregrip and buttstock are sling swivel screw holes. Here's a rear sling swivel off an M40 stock in each of these holes:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
There's also something written on the left side of the stock, it says "Mortuus Via Longus." I assume it's in Latin and means something like "death by long [distance]." I guess it's a fitting statement for a sniper rifle:
[quoted image]
I have a bunch of original M40 stocks to compare this weird stock to, but only one of them has this same gray bedding. Remington didn't use any bedding material when they built the M40's (their "hand bedding" was just making the stock with tighter dimensions so the receiver fits better) and the 2112 armorers typically used Bisonite as the bedding compound on the M40's during the 1960/70's. I don't know what material this gray bedding is and I don't know why the 2112's didn't use Bisonite like the majority of the bedded M40's.
I've seen a few other original M40 stocks with this same bedding, so it's probably original to the stock when it was in USMC inventory. If this is the case, then the foregrip and stock modifications were also done at the RTE shop, since the stock would have to be rebedded for a new civilian barreled action (if the mods were done outside the Corps). I don't know why someone would go through all the trouble modifying the stock and then not fit it to their barreled action.
My barreled action sort of fits the stock after I slightly opened up the recoil lug inlet, but it's still not a perfect fit in the original bedding. When I received the stock I looked closely at the bedding and it was clean, no one had touched the bedding until I decided to do so. All of this information points to the stock possibly being modified by 2112's.
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
Modified M40 on the left, regular M40 on the right:
[quoted image]
[quoted image]
So, that's my new stock and that's all the information I have, hopefully someone here knows something about it! I think this could be an RTE modified M40 stock, there's a few indicators that it's possible and the 2112's were known to have modified a ton of M40 parts after the Vietnam War. They experimented with everything in order to create a better sniper rifle (that's how they ended up with the M40A1), so it wouldn't surprise me at all if this was one of their creations. However, this RTE connection is pretty much impossible to prove without a firsthand account from a 2112 or sniper who made/saw/used this stock. It could also be some drunken creation by a civilian who got their hands on a cheap surplus stock. I have no idea, I just think it's interesting.
What do you guys think about this strange stock?

Pretty neat.
My first thought is maybe it was done for someone with a large framed body and long arms. Like you mentioned the grip is pretty far forward and not ideally ergonomically. Maybe he had long arms and big shoulders?

By the way, an update on the two Arisaka rifles I picked up the other day.
It turns out that the dust cover that was on the Type 38 was the wrong dust cover. It has a serial number stamped into the back of it and it matches the serial numbers on the type 99.
I.E. my type 99 is now 100% complete, numbers matching.
Previous owner must have swapped it.

Here is my hunting spot tonight. Been here since 2:00 and the feeder goes off at 4:00pm Central. There are a lot of hogs moving in the area. But no sightings yet. There are a few more stand options around me for the rest of the weekend. Hopefully I will have a video for you guys.
[quoted image]

Looking forward to hearing you report back.
We don’t have hogs out here and all large game tags (deer, elk, antelope etc.) are on a draw/lottery basis. You can buy over the counter archery tags for most (except sheep) and if I don’t get drawn for rifle season, I’ll probably do that for deer.
I know that hogs are a nuisance a lot of places, but I’m kind of jellos of some of the guys that can go hunt hogs whenever.

Sounds awesome.
Deer meat for me depends.
I’m not a big fan of steaks as they don’t have much fat content in them and the meat is very lean. A lot of people tend to over cook it as well because they think that since it’s wild game meat it needs to be cooked longer. In doing do, you’re just drying out the meat.
We basically only do back straps as steaks.
The rest things like burger meat, breakfast sausage, summer sausage etc.
Also helps if you add beef tallow to the mix.

All - my on again, off again search for a classic 12g (say pre 1960) is back on, thinking something like a Model 12.

1) The recoil pad is aftermarket and hurts the value IMO. Early production Browning A5s should have a carved horn butt plate. The stock was cut to put the recoil pad on, so there's no brining that back to original.

2) You should be able to look up the gun by serial number and get a good idea of when it was manufactured. It's definitely early, but you can't date it to a specific year as far as I know.
Here is the Browning website to look up serial numbers.
https://www.browning.com/support/date-your-firearm/auto-5-semi-automatic-shotgun.html

I have a few A5s and I actually prefer the ones with the a raised rib sight.

You sure that’s circa 1930’s? I thought the pre WW2 guns had the safety at the front of the trigger guard?
Belgium prices are all over. People ask crazy prices sometimes. I’ll see a 60’s Belgium, no rib, with a Cutts in average condition that people are asking $1600 for and sometimes they’ll pop up for $800. Browning collectors are actually odder, more temperamental and can be bigger pricks/snobs than pinball collectors. Never tel a Browning guy you push barbed wire fences down with your Auto5. It’s worse than telling a pinball guy about drilling hasp holes in WPC games as a teenager.

Actually, I think you're right.
I think its one of the newer serial number sequences.
The M prefix is for standard weight.
Looks more like a 1950s gun, the barrel is for 2 3/4 only (went to 2 2/4 and 3 inch mags in the 60s).

Looks like the tripod for a 30 cal.

Its for a Browning 1919 A4.
This is my first belt fed and I felt like this is a good place to get my feet wet.
Its of course built from one of the Israeli parts kits that got re-imported, chambered in .308 and semi auto.
Might wind up buying a .30-06 barrel for it, but I'm kind of ok with it being chambered in .308 since its cheaper to shoot and easier to get than .30-06.

Would love a Ma' Deuce, but they cost as much as two high end pinball machines.
I guess we will see how much I like the A4 first and see where that goes.
Pretty excited about this though.

Interesting.
I wonder if pellet guns that use Co2 will start incorporating this feature?

Got some new accessories for the Browning 1919.
The cloth belts seem to be surplus and in really nice shape. There’s some foxing, but they look unused and all the text stamped on them is pretty readable. I almost don’t want to use them, but there’s no way I’m not going to run these at least a few times. I’ll probably wind up buying a couple more just to set aside with all the other parts and tools.
Gonna put the spade grip on this weekend and see how I like it.

Anybody else own a PS90 or P90?
If so, what kind of optics have you tried on it and how do you like them?
I tried a couple different optics I have sitting around the house and nothing seems right to me.
I really love the gun and how it shoots, but truly hate the stock iron sights on it.
The optics Ringsights makes specifically for this gun looks pretty good, but seem to be going for $700-$800 (worth it?). I would hate to spend that kind of money on a gun specific optic to find out I don’t like it any better than the stock iron sights.

Speaking of video game/movie guns (more specifically 007 guns).
Here’s one I bought a while back because I thought it was really cool in old Bond movies.
Armalite AR7 survival rifle.
Originally designed as a air force survival rifle, but made popular in From Russia With Love.
It cycles like shit (jams about every 3rd or 4th round), but really fun.
Its accurate as hell, just has cycling issues (at least mine does).
Haven’t shot one of the new Henry remakes, which looks really cool.

Maybe these things are just designed poorly.

Quoted from USMCSGT0331:

I've got one and it even has a Gen 1 or Gen 2 trigger pack in it. The Gen 1/2 trigger packs are worth a lot because...... reasons. Lol. I put an Aimpoint on mine, it's the perfect optic for these rifles!
On another note, I bought 9 silencers this week, lol. Here's the list:
SF FA762K
SF FA762SS
SF SOCOM RC1 5.55
Sig Mod X-9
Ops Inc 15th Model 5.56
2 x Allen Engineering AEM5's
2 x B&T VP9's
The 2 B&T silencers come with their VP9 pistol. I've always wanted a WWII Welrod pistol, but I don't even know if there are any in private collections, they're that rare. A few years ago B&T announced that they were going to be making a modern version of the Welrod, which they called the VP9 (not affiliated with H&K's VP9, completely different pistol). I could never find the B&T VP9, they were always out of stock, but I finally found one for sale this week! It took a few years to get and I still have a few months waiting for the stamps, but I'm extremely happy with this find! If you don't know what the B&T VP9 is, you can read about it here in this article:
https://www.recoilweb.com/bt-vp9-review-veterinary-pistol-163880.html
Did anyone else get anything exiting recently? Hopefully you guys have been able to find things that you've been searching for!

Yeah, I learned a little about the trigger packs a year or so ago at one of the local gun shows when I was still in the “thinking about getting one of these” mode. There were three at a local show and one guys was priced much higher than the other two. In retrospect I probably should have bought his, but wasn’t feeling confident enough at the time.

Here’s the two most interesting things I picked up lately. Sold a couple of pins to finance these.
Optics are on the way for the SCAR-20. Bought a really nice Vortex Razor to put on it.

A little FN love.
This is basically the setup I’m going with on the SCAR-20. Might be a little overboard with the Vortex Razor, but will mostly be doing some distance shooting with this thing. Also planning on taking it hog hunting though. She’s heavy as hell, but I’m mostly planning on using it either from a bench or prone. Only thing left is to replace the flash hider with a break and then just waiting on the tax stamp for a surefire suppressor.
Went with a ACOG on the M249 Para and gonna leave it at that.

Stopped by one of the local shops yesterday while I was out getting my morning coffee and picked this up. Ruger bolt action 308. Came with a pretty nice illuminated scope, 5 boxes of match grade ammo, 2 extra mags and a custom case for $750. One of the local guys won it as a prize in a competition and didn’t want it, so he consigned it at a local shop. Never been fired. Thought it was a pretty good deal for the price and should make an excellent deer rifle. Extremely light and I really like the trigger on it. Laser bore sighted it this afternoon and will take it to the range in the next week or so to get her dialed in.

Here’s a few more parts that came in for my Norinco AK. I have a late pre ban under folder that had the bayonet cut off for importation. Turns out you can buy all the parts to turn a underfolder back into a double folder for under $600. Seems crazy because everyone seems to be asking $6500+ for a pre ban double folder, yet you can buy a really nice under folder for $1500-$2000. The parts are all Norinco/Polytech parts, so I doubt anybody could tell the difference and it will be all period correct. Only thing is that the front sight with the bayonet swivel/lug comes bare metal and I will need to get it blued. I’ll post an update when the project is finished. Also replacing the AR style flash hider with the correct AK slant break.

Is buying/selling allowed on this thread, or just showing the guns off?

Not really sure.
There’s been a few instances where people linked to something they were selling on gunbroker. Also a few where someone mentioned they were going to be selling something if someone was interested.

In the initial post by TigerLaw he lays down the basic ground rules for this thread.
It’s basically a discussion thread and the main things not allowed are political talk etc.
he didn’t really discuss buying and selling, so I’m not really sure.
I don’t really have an issue with it as long as it’s not someone spamming the thread with crap and is legitimately someone offering to sell something.

As others have mentioned, out of state sales is a little more complicated because there are federal regulations and a firearm would have to be shipped to an FFL holder.

I would buy a Henry lever action 410 if not for the 410 ammo shortage ! what gives??

Wallmart (at least out here) has them from time to time. When they get shipments of shotgun shells its usually a bunch of those Winchester value packs of 12 gauge where it’s four boxes of shells, which sell out very fast. Things like 410, 16 and 28 gauge they only sell in single boxes, but they get those in at the same time. Those tend to be on the shelf for a while and don’t sell out so fast so you can normally pick up a couple boxes.

#1843 1 year ago

One of the other things with 410 is there’s increased demand with revolvers like the Taurus Judge etc., revolvers that shoot 44 long colt as well as 410. I know people who use them for a hiking gun where they load the first two rounds with 410 for rattlesnake and the remainder of the cylinder with 44 long colt in case of a predator attack. I don’t really care much for them, but those types of multi caliber handguns seem to be popular with some.

Hard hitting and doesn’t leave a big exit that’s very destructive to the meat. My brother shot a hog with it yesterday morning and same results. Picked up the new Smith & Wesson M&P FPC folding 9mm pistol carbine. Sort of like the Kel-Tec SUB-2000, but side folds. I like the fact that you can fit two extra magazines in the stock, as well as the fact that side folding (rather than center folding like the Kel-Tec) allows for you to more easily put an optic on it (although I’m gonna go with iron sight on it). Other than that I think I’ll put a forward grip of some sort on it. Anyhow, I think it’s pretty neat and thought I would share.

When the Sub2K originally came out I remember you couldn’t mount ANYTHING. It didn’t have any rails and never mind that it folded upwards too like you say then you couldn’t fold it if you did mount.

They make sort of a swivel mount for the SUB-2000 now that swings around so you can put optics on it (at least on the 2nd gen). I’m not sure how well it hold zero, but haven’t read any complains about it. I have one and just use the stick sights on it. Personally I like them and think they shoot really well for what they are (cheap and fun).

I was thinking the new Smith & Wesson M&P FPC used the same magazines as the Shield or Shield plus handguns, but it does not (I tried both). A few of the YouTube reviews I watched said it did, but it does not. The lowers looks very similar, but the magazines are slightly different and not interchangeable. I hope the vine out with a 2nd generation where this is possible.

Also really fun to take out when you have guests in town. Took some clients from Europe out and brought it with and they were like WTF?
They were bragging to some of my other business friends from overseas and now they all want to come to Arizona. Go figure.
