Quoted from Darscot:

Man, it has to be at least 15 years since I had a penny. Canada dropped them in 2013 but for years before that no one would ever use one. Every cashier just had the take one leave one dish at the till. Do you guys still not even have the dish yet?

I am a coin collector and talk about not producing the Lincoln cent has been going on for several years.
At this point, the Lincoln cent is still being minted and used in the United States.
The value of 1 cent is such that some people will not even bend over to pick one up off the ground these days.

Quoted from Darscot:

Is it because of the tribute to Lincoln that you guys are keeping it? Ours just had the Queen and maple leaf so it didn't really have historical standing.

I really have no idea why the Lincoln cent is still being produced or if it should stop being minted.
I have no opinion, one way or the other to be honest.
I just read the news and wait to see if my hoard of Lincoln cents will become valuable one day.
In 1959, the metal composition of the Lincoln cent was changed and the reverse side was also changed to depict the Lincoln memorial instead of wheat branches.
So, Lincoln cents minted in 1958 and previous to that date are referred to as "wheat pennies".
In 1943-1945, during World War II, the Lincoln cent was minted with steel and the difference is obvious.
The Lincoln cent was first minted in 1909 to replace the Indian Head Cent, so it has been around for a long time.

I wonder what the 89 rejected coins were?
Perhaps tokens, dirty, damaged, foreign coins?
Just curious.
11,893 coins is quite a haul.
