I don't blame them! Suppose you could pick up a limitless supply, one at a time, say spread across a parking lot. If it took you 5 seconds per penny, that would be 12 cents a minute, or $7.20 an hour, not even the federal minimum wage!

As for a guess, I'm tempted to use what's known as The Wisdom of Crowds, since all the guesses are visible. Supposedly if one averages all of the guesses, it will be eerily accurate. But since there is no prize, I'm too lazy to actually put in the effort.
