Really hate to say this after you've run off so many variations but I believe I've spotted a typo (pretty sure it should be "MODE") . . .

The Left+Start end game option wasn't added to Stern games until recently; code updates to older Stern titles typically add that as part of the update.

Old game code issues, all of them. They were implemented in v0.90 almost 4 1/2 (!) years ago; current code is v1.10.
Definitely get with the op about that mega-outdated code. Apart perhaps from end-user audio/video/speech customizations (unlikely here), no excuse for that in my book.
