got a GOTG Pro with a locked-up Groot motor. i checked the usual suspects; Marco had it in the catalog but was out of stock. Pinball Life had it in stock for significantly less, but their version lacks the caps that run between the motor body and the +/- pins. i did get the Pinball Life version since it they had it; glad i didn't hold out for Marco since the listing has since been removed from their catalog.

does anyone know if there's a good reason those caps are necessary? i've replaced quite a few motors over the years and don't recall any that had caps like that added.

Motor start and run capacitors?

A photo would be worth a thousand words.

here's a pic of the original (dead) motor assembly. some of the listings for #511-7926-00 specify "with caps". Pinball Life lists the same for that part number as well as #041-5142-00 which appears to be the version without caps and likely used in Stern Wars Pre/LE.

looks like the listing has now popped back up on Marco, though they are still out of stock.

since i wasn't sure, and not having new caps on-hand, i went ahead and transplanted the old caps to the new motor. it was a kinda tedious process and if i have to replace this motor again i'd rather not do it again if it's not necessary, or figure out the values and just get new caps instead.

and yes, the new motor with the transplanted caps works fine.

I was thinking motor start caps based on description... but why would they be on a DC motor like this?

Photo shows they are EMI filters, not motor start caps.
What are the markings on them?

Quoted from G-P-E:

What are the markings on them?

i didn't check when it was out and the motor is already back in the machine, and none of the pics i took are clear enough or show enough to read the markings. and of course, the machine is now packed up in storage as i'm already on to the next repair/upgrade. when i pull it back out, i'll see if i can read at least the one that's partially facing.

i was also thinking for some kind of filtering; maybe the motor was causing some electrical noise somehow when operating which affected other systems and they cleaned it up with the caps.

i suppose i could have installed it without them to see just what happened. ah, next time i have to replace the motor maybe i'll do that.

Bump for same question.

Replaced one today, with motor from pinballlife. Went ahead and transferred the caps over just to be sure. It wasn’t too hard to clip off of the old ones as one, I was actually able to cut the tabs off the old motor with ‘em. I also had to scrape the coating off the new motor and roughed it up before I could successfully tack to it tho.

Any chance of getting the markings off those caps?

I need to buy new caps ... it looks like 2 sets of markings
One looks like RSE 103
and then HRD 027 or MAD 027

What do these mean and where can I get some?
Thanks.

I don't recognize the manufacturer markings but the 103 says it would be a 0.01uF (or 10nF) ceramic.
Cap also doesn't list voltage rating. Motor runs from 24V so I would go to 100V. But the fatness of those existing caps say "200V" rating to me.

Thank you Ed ... I got parts at a long time electronic store because of being in a hurry.
So 3 small caps were $6.60 ... se la vie! They were shaped a little larger but at least there is room around the motor area.
Anyway, the new motor is working now ... Thanks.
