Quoted from Patrunkenphat7:I recently played a Guardians for the first time and was blown away by the overall quality of the game.
Art is beautiful, heavy use of theme assets, awesome sculpted toys... The code felt fantastic with diverse modes and rewards for progress. Cherry Bomb Multiball in particular is a great reachable objective. The two non-mode multiballs also feel deep and well-coded. The layout was fun to shoot - absolutely nothing wrong with it. One complaint could be that it's too bland - even though fan layouts are the bread and butter of pinball, sometimes you want just a little extra to make the shots feel like more than simply "another fan layout." This game, for the most part, is a high quality stock fan layout.
So my question for the post is this - why does Guardians get so much hate? It's currently rated 64th on the top 100 way behind most other modern Sterns including Deadpool, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Batman 66, Star Trek, Metallica, etc. I'm asking this question because I am considering adding it to my wishlist, but maybe I'm missing something with the longevity of enjoyment.
Neat trick on the Top 100 is that you can generate a custom Top 100 based on different criteria. For example you can make a list based only on rating from the last 6 months. This is great for new games that sucked when released but improved over time. But it does disadvantage older games.
In this case, GOTG comes in at 13th place or 10th if you take out the duplicate games.
Only flaw in my argument is that Last Action Hero comes in at 14th!!! WTF?!!!?
