Quoted from Lermods:

I have owned all four jjp games and most spike games, including Munsters pro. In my view there is no comparison between the two with Stern being much lower.
-Have you ever tried to move a stern or jjp game or even lift a playfield? There is a reason jjp games weigh more standard body DI). Beefier mechs, higher gauge wire, higher gauge connectors, lack of fuses, more toys and just a ton of stuff on the play field.
-The quality of the board set is much lower for spike games, they are literally meant to be non-repairable throw away items. Your friend should consider himself lucky nothing has failed, plenty have. What will happen in 5 years? You can replace a fuse in a jjp game whereas in a stern game, the entire board needs to be replaced, that’s a huge quality difference.
- Relatedly, spike Node board failure puts a game down for at least a week, replacing a fuse, 5 mins.
-Sound quality/parts.
-cabinet construction method and wood thickness (do the research)
-monitor quality.
I like stern games, they are all fun, but for the long run, I’d rather own a jjp. I feel the stern game’s from the mid-2000s were built much better than the games of today.

Thanks for the good information. This is more of what I was looking for in this thread.

Recent polls shows that people in this world feel more terrible than ever. Just by reading this thread I can understand why. Can we please keep this thread about Wonka Pinball and who´s in? Please

#1756 4 years ago
Quoted from jimwe5t:

We also noticed the Stern locking mechanism is far superior, as well as Sterns Apron design is better in that it doesn’t require ugly metal fence to keep the ball from slamming into the glass above the apron.

I agree 100% the newer stern lockdown clips are way better than the older version. Not sure why it got so much backlash when it came out.

It's because of all the prior cost cutting and overall quality. The clips are more convenient, but they are a cost cutting decision. They are also less robust, which may be an issue down the road. The lock down system is not something you want breaking in a routed machine, so it's a fair concern. In home use, I prefer them. I just wish some of the savings went elsewhere in the machine instead of all to Gary.

Wonka!

Wonka!

Whatever the reason they are better and I like them - not much there to break and cause an issue
but 2 of my old william's machines had lockdown bar issues with the old lever type and they became a pain to lock

Okay so back on topic... Sort of... Anyone have any idea when JJP is going to actually release ALL of the CE details/design/artwork?

I'm guessing at Pintastic ... if some of the Wonka kids sign something in the artwork - translite, apron, playfield out lanes ... Probably something if JJP can.

Glad to see this - thank you for doing this! The Wonka hype is dying down with that usual unfortunate delay JJP has of shipping the game after revealing it. I need me some Wonka fix.

In other news, I finally sold the other GT19 pedestal I needed to sell to bump my cash piggy bank to the amount I need

I've already pestered Chris from KingPin enough.... and now we wait.

If I wouldn‘t own a DI, I probably would be in. And my DI will not leave me in the next years, maybe never.
But I think that those two pins are similar, for example the use of the camera.
Maybe I am wrong and so I‘m looking forward to play it somewhere to get a well-founded view.
I‘m sure that Wonka is a great pin. Let‘s hope this pin will become a cashcow for JJP!

This should be good, Karl is a serious player. Maybe he can actually start the multiball that's supposed to take all day across multiple games.

I've yet to see someone hit Wonkavator multi-ball.

#1769 4 years ago

I think I'm actually going to watch a live stream for once and hopefully that'll be more to help convince me one way or the other to get a LE or not.

Quoted from Aurich:

I can't recall where, but I did see the Wonkavator multi ball played in a video that has been posted to Youtube. Does anyone know if there has been significant advancement in the software in the version Karl will be playing vs. what existed in the last round of video streams? A view of the game with fleshed out software much closer to final would be what I would most like to see. Really not interested in watching another video with the software still as severely lacking as in the ones I have already watched.

#1771 4 years ago

I did get a response from JJP about my request to have a "virtual" carryover of the wonkavator ball lock on the SE. It was merely a canned "thanks for your contribution" response. No idea if they're planning on doing it.

#1772 4 years ago

The wonkavator ball lock is the main difference between the SE and LE so no way would they add a virtual ball carry over.
I don't think it would make sense anyway.

But you DO understand that the Wonkavator multiball is already coded for the SE, right? It's virtual. And the carryover is already user-selectable in the menus for the LE and CE. Why wouldn't they offer that same feature in the SE? Without it, you're pretty much never going to be able to hit it in casual play. Why bother coding it in if the majority of the public playing an SE on route never get to hit it?

The JJP stream that they did a few weeks back had several Wonkavator multi balls played over the 2 or 3 games they played.

No one is going skip to play the SE in public because the Wonkavator isn't there.
More people will upgrade to the LE to get the Wonkavator (and extras though).

Include it on the SE and they hurt their own LE sales.

#1776 4 years ago

I thought JJP Pins the SE and LE versions were just cosmetic changes but gameplay and game features were the same. Has that changed since WW or even POTC?

Yes, with Wonka there is a difference in gameplay now too with absence of the wonkavator ball lock in the SE (it's virtual instead).

Wow! I agree. This is the best Wonka stream I’ve seen yet. I love being able to see the mini LCD screen. And, the light show looks way more vibrant in this stream.

Will this be on YouTube later? I would love to watch it in full when I have more time.

#1780 4 years ago

Nice stream screen layout, a lot happening in this game.

#1781 4 years ago

Watched the stream and it was well executed. Best camera use I've seen yet.

Jack Guarnieri dropped in Twitch chat to say "hi". Kaneda (if it was really him -> Kaneda23) was there initially making observations but it looked like they may have booted him (deleted his comments and he went silent).

Visually, the game looked beautiful and ball flow was butter.

People were commenting that the sound seems tweaked in a positive way since the reveal (less casino sounding, more sound clip integration). Honestly, it would be hard for me to call out any major sound differences since the reveal but the sound felt different.

Code still seemed to be lacking significant synch between voice/vids and adding new call outs for the most part. Still has the Grandpa Joe voice actor making most of the commentary.

I believe with continued polishing of the code and refinement of assets before it hits release, this game will be a hit. It definitely hits all the right check marks to remain in the buy column for me .

Still jazzed to see a final CE configuration!

Karl does a great job with streaming. I was one of the players tonight and really thought the game shot great. Some easy shots and some challenging shots to keep it interesting. It's kind of hard to know what to go for with your first time playing and on a stream, but I did what I could. The upper right shot isn't easy without peering over to see the ball come down, but I think you may get used to know when it's at the right place to flip without peering. The rest of the game had great flow. I'm very picking anymore when it comes to software, so I'm hoping they add more to make it really interesting where you can go for different challenges at different times and they are all unique in their own way in using the playfield. The computer modes seemed a little bland to be blunt, but I may not have all the info. I just hope they add a little more to them. Wonkavator MB has different stages I had read before, which is perfect. Love that kind of stuff. They are suppose to add 3 mini wizard modes right? That would be great.

Karl has in my opinion the best camera/feed setups in pinball. Even got the mini screen up so you could really see how they're using it clearly, lots of helpful instructions, I really like the concept.

I'll be honest: I don't care for the sound package. It's too whizzy chirp chirp bleep bloop bright and dingy for me. I know this kind of thing is totally subjective, and it fits the theme, and it's just my personal taste, but I could never own this game after listening to it today, it would drive me nuts.

Quoted from Gasoline:

Unless there's some licensing problem or something I can't imagine JJP isn't going to deliver a totally polished game. I still think it's crazy to buy a game on potential, instead of after the code feels good and you've played some good games on it, from any company. But if you like it now I'm sure it will just get better. When have they ever not delivered on code? Stern has a mixed track record, that's just being honest right? But JJP has no badly coded or incomplete feeling games.

JJP has two problems right now imo:

1. They don't wait to announce until they're ready to ship games, and lose all this momentum; people are fickle and impulsive and get hyped up and deflated, it's just human nature. Why not build them and then announce it? It wasn't even a real secret before the reveal right? So just wait until you're ready to get games into hands, get those wallets open.

2. I hope whatever problem there is on the POTC playfields is a solved issue. Is the clear coat not being left to cure long enough because they're trying to get games out? They can't do another game with that chipping or people are gonna freak out.

It's an issue on TNA too, and mine is bubbled up around the star posts, just not chipped. Whatever is up, clear coat formulas or bad plastics or over tightening or not enough cure time or whatever, people get mad when their playfields chip where the ball isn't even touching.

While I am still interested in this game, I agree with AUrich that what I have heard so far sounds very casino like, which I hate.

I should be able to play a prototype game this weekend, hopefully with non weak flippers and updated code.

My thought was to (sell my TAF and) get a POTC or Wonka, but after reading about the recent POTC issues, I now don't know.

Since I only have room for one pin, I need something I won't get bored of.

I understand your point based off of the Stern model, but on the flip side, JJP gets to see the first reactions from the public after the reveal, people playing the prototypes at the shows, and streams. They DO make some minor adjustments based off of our feedback if it makes sense and is easy to implement. If the masses really hate something in code, they can adjust. If it is early enough, they can make adjustments elsewhere as well (like the apron art on JJPOTC). I like that they see what the initial feedback is, gather game stats from us mediocre players at shows (like average ball time, number of times different modes run, etc), and adjust. The secret of the new game gets out in a type of game preview, yet they still get a type of focus group to give them some initial feedback before the final launch. I think the 60 day window between prototype reveal and production is fine ... just my opinion.

The stream won't be posted to YouTube until over the weekend, or possibly Monday. 4k recordings are MASSIVE in size (this one was 250GB) and I need to compress it to get it under YouTube's size limit of 128GB. For now you can watch the Twitch replay at 720p here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/425409636

Quoted from KingBW:

I think it's losing them sales. This isn't my problem or anything, but I don't think it's a good business model. The hype for Wonka peaked way too early I suspect.

The chipping playfield part seems like a much bigger potential sales killer though honestly, I hope that's solved. I'm kinda disturbed that this is turning into a multi-company thing, what is up with that? These games cost too much for this kind of ugly problem, collectors don't want to see it even if it doesn't directly affect gameplay.

#1795 4 years ago

Totally agree with you Aurich. I'm getting a SE next week, wish I would have ordered the LE in time, but oh well.

There's no reason they should crack. Dumbfounded as to why they switched up posts to the beveled/sharp edges. Someone should have caught that or someone should have cared enough on the assembly line.

Curious as to who is overseeing assembly of these games as I believe they're missing a critical component.
