I brought this game home from Pinfest earlier this year, thanks to a great deal from Joe at PinballStar. Actually bought a pair of them, and both games were equally bad, in horrible shape.

Kept one with the “better” playfield, and passed the other one on to a fellow Pinsider for free a few months back.

I’ve been working on this alongside my Halloween retheme, and my buddy asked me to post a thread so he could consider restoring his. Thought I would document it here for anyone that wanted to follow.

Here’s the beginning. Burn marks on PF somehow, no backglass, game is a filthy mess.

Inside...I guess this is why the one leg wouldn’t go on. A small leg bolt in backwards?

You’re always tempted to wipe down the playfield just to see what’s underneath. Not as horrible as it could be. Just a quick wipe of a section with CP100.

Glad someone is going to give them some love.

Definitely. Thanks for checkin in. Most people know I am not a purist, so I often don’t keep everything “original”. Usually do my games a little different.

How’d you powder coat those so fast? Who do you use?

Haha. I started this project a few weeks ago. My buddy is going to restore his and asked me to post a thread so he could follow, but I was delayed so I’m playing catch up.

But I did get the batch of parts back in a week. I use Bonehead Performance in Warrington. Killer shop, and luckily I know the owner.

Backbox empty and light panel removed. Even the speaker grate is rusted slightly, so I’m just going to sandblast and powdercoat practically all of the metal.

MPU and driver boards look pretty crappy, so might just grab Swemmer boards.

Quoted from mrm_4:

That’s awesome. Im currently painting a whole bunch of stuff for a project and I was just saying I wish I could’ve/would’ve powder coated it.

You have to powder anything metal. Unless you want to polish and keep it original, or chrome it. Powdered parts won’t rust or oxidize....at least they shouldn’t for a very long damn time.

I tried simple spraying and clearcoating myself in the past, and even though it might look OK, it never looks as good...and it’s nowhere near as resilient as powder. I’ll still spray bolt and screw heads to match at home occasionally.

As the lucky recipient of the 2nd machine you passed on, I'm totally following this. Currently 3rd on my project/restore list.....but this one is pretty daunting.

Do you need any plastics? I don’t remember if any were cracked or chipped on the game you took.

These cleaned up pretty nice, but a few of them are warped and meh so I ordered a new repro set from PBR.

Took a year, but worth it.

Awesome. I’ve played a couple of them, and really like the game. Some people say it’s a clunker, but I just think they don’t shoot well enough. I was hitting shots pretty smoothly after a few games.

Love the art package on ACNC, and the audio is killer. Nice addition.

My spidey needed new light shields and i found a shipping tube at the ups store that worked nicely

Interesting. I’ll have to try that sometime.

Already have some replacements 3D printed for Spidey. Much more durable than the originals. And some with tabs if I want to mount with screws or tacks, as opposed to glueing.

Made a partial letter stencil and started playing with some reds via airbrush touch up. Just sprayed one coat. Overall the cabinet paint on this thing isn’t too bad, so not sure if I should sand down and redo the whole thing completely. Debating.

The gray areas could be a little tricky with that webbing either way.

I was thinking that, but I have to tend to some touchups on the gray/white regardless due to a few deeper scratches and dings. I’ll hit a test spot first and see how it looks.

Yup, definitely worth it as Borg said. These Gottliebs, especially Spidey, always have spot flaking. More annoying than anything. Neither of these two pins had any backglass when I bought them.

This is the second or third Spidey repro glass I’ve gotten from Shay, amongst others. Top-notch reproductions, and licensed. And he’s awesome with service and shipping as well.

Here’s the reverse. He only did a limited run this time though, so I’d grab one now if you plan on it.

Feeling a little better, so going to get back to tackling this and Halloween. Itching to see this game with all the powdered metal in place.

Paint is so nice on the cab under the siderails...wish the rest of the gray and webbing looked as good. Lots of staining, patina and scrapes on this thing.

I’m really debating sanding the entire cab down and completely redoing it. Would look so killer. But that webbing splatter....

Curious.... why Bondo and not wood filler?

What you use on the sides doesn’t particularly matter, but I usually use this, and then reinforce the corners with either fiberglass or JB Weld. Much stronger and much more durable.

In my experience, if you use straight wood filler or just Bondo on the corners and it gets hit or bumped with any force, the whole piece will chunk or break right off.

Well, personnaly I prefer Car body filler, but I'm convinced Resin (as told by VID1900) is a great solution... I just have to mind about the formwork to obtain fine angles... If ya got tips?

When using resin or fiberglass, I usually just use double-sided tape. You can get a roughly good 90° angle, then peel off the tape and just sand lightly to make it as square as possible.

Been mulling this over for a bit now. This cab is a little rough, so I’m going to repaint it. All the powdered metal and cleared PF came out fantastic, so I don’t want to reassemble in a half-assed touched up cabinet.

It has too many divots and scrapes in it, and has way too much discoloring/yellowing in the gray anyway to just to try to touch it up. I guess we’ll see how good I can replicate that webbing now.

Going to scan, but making a paper stencil for backup and sizing. Red first. Lines can be rough, I’ll straighten them up with a level before I cut.

Psyched! Marco and Titan orders came in today, so I’ll be able to finish up the playfield. Thinking about going with blue/red posts and red rubbers.

Got most of it done, but fell two lane guides and a few post screws short.

Not putting the new plastic set on until the playfield is in the cab.

Marco has the web drops on backorder, but I was actually debating on doing something more custom. What you see there are the oddball ones left in by previous owner on mine as well.

Busy two weeks, but saw a little break in the cold weather so stripped and painted the playfield rails. Hopefully the warm weather holds up so I can get to the cabinet this weekend.

Quoted from radial_head:

Smart thinking making the flipper rubbers blue. Any type of wear or color smearing shows up so readily on Red/Orange/Yellow flipper rubbers.

Definitely part of my thinking. So many people use translucent these days, which get a little grimy after 75 or so plays.

Just made a kit for my GTB Hulk too...was tempted to go translucent, but ended up going green for maintenance, and to pull the darker green out of the PF art.

#146 4 years ago
Quoted from BorgDog:

It always seems to take several games before figuring out Hulk shots again after not playing it a while, flipper area so tight and the rebounds of the not slings are so different.

Right? Sometimes you get a bounce off the "non-slings" and it goes SDTM fast. Definitely takes a different technique to play Hulk. Some people like the gameplay...some don't. But like Spiderman, the art package is fantastic, including the cab.

Quoted from BorgDog:

Would love to see a pic of your Hulk with all the colors colsond3 I'm not so good with colors so my hulk is all black at the moment, I did go all translucent on Alien Star however, except for flippers which are orange. I really like the translucent look on it with the clear posts and mostly black playfield.

I'm sure the Alien Star looks stellar with translucent rubbers and posts. Those just fit that game. I should have 2 Titan kits coming today or tomorrow, so I'll definitely post a pic or two once I shop Hulk. Should get to it this week with the increased downtime / voluntary seclusion from society.

Quoted from radial_head:

Gosh you're making me miss my Hulk even more! I really miss having that game around, but you can't keep em all!
Yours looks great, but personally I've never understood the theory behind putting "color matched" LEDs on playfield inserts. Detracts from the artwork or alters it to a point that I can't stand is how I've always felt on the matter. I just see EVERYBODY doing it and I don't get it.

On the inserts? I didn’t do the inserts on Hulk yet, but if the insert is already the color of the bulb you throw in to illuminate it, I don’t see an issue with that. I’ll often put green under green inserts, red under red. Most others cool white or sunlight brightens them up nicely.

I don’t like colored GI that washes out the playfield art. On Hulk I did put a green bulb behind each of the 3 stand up targets, for accent too...but mainly to show the task/rule. Other than those 3 bulbs, the rest of the GI are Comet Sunlight LEDs.

#157 4 years ago
Quoted from radial_head:

Caught my typo, I meant G.I. under the plastics. What a dummy I am. I am now seeing/realizing/understanding your green LEDs on the standup.
Thanks for responding to my bizarre thoughts!

That is what I figured, just wanted to clarify. There is a whole thread dedicated to “color puking” games, but the posts there are very condescending and antagonistic for the most part.

I might add a few color LED’s as accents or to show tasks, but usually don’t go overboard. Although I did it in my BSD a long time ago. I’m sure you love that. LOL.

I do like the way it looks, admittedly, but that game is due for a shop job. Might go back to cool white or sunlight LEDs when I rip it down. But I do feel like BSD deserves to be a little darker.

Well, you convinced me, I’m going to try to follow you through this. I’m new to restorations, would you recommend I get everything operational and then fix it up, or just start cleaning and prepping and assume it will all come together?

Awesome. Thanks for following along. I’m starting back on mine tomorrow ironically.

First, that PF does look great. Is there any wear on it? If not, I would strip that thing down and get it clearcoated first to preserve that art.

If it doesn’t boot at all, you might want to get it firing up first. Most parts are available for it, from some source, so you could just start disassembling and get it pretty first.

That transformer board does look pretty crappy and rusted, so you might want to clean that up and check the transformers.

Cabinet doesn’t look that bad to me, unless it has water damage. Actually looks pretty good other than the rusted / oxidized siderails.

What is the Cambion chip and daughter board that you have on yours? Mine is an empty socket.

It’s a daughter/reset board, but people often remove those. Most System 80 games will boot and run without them. And sometimes leaving it hooked up will actually prevent a game from starting and/or lock the solenoids, if there’s some issue with the capacitors. It’s a watchdog circuit of sorts.

Looks like a winner for base coat. Gloss Classic Gray. Two or three coats will be an almost perfect match to the original.

I thought the Hammered would have an interesting result (far right), but it’s way too shiny and doesn’t saturate well. Middle is way too light. These were the best 3 out of the 10 or so I tried.

I’m going to tape off one stenciled side tomorrow and lay on a base gray and play with some white webbing. If it doesn’t look good enough, just going to redo the whole cabinet.

Once Spidey is done, I need to get back to this puppy. So I’m eager.

So the final method of blending it someone suggested still didn’t work with a result of good webbing.

And the cabinet surface is way too rough from years of wear & tear to look good without proper sanding anyway.

So good news. I loaded it up, took it to a buddy that does professional paint work. He said he can replicate the webbing with non-thinned lacquer, as they did in the factory.

So now I have to sand it down, stencils are being made, and he is going to do a primer, basecoat and webbing, and maybe a few custom special touches before clear coat.

Yeah, it’s been a while...ended up getting really busy and not having huge gaps of time to work on this.

Really amped now and looking forward to seeing what he can do with it. He does the Flyers goalie masks, and has done work for Travis Barker and some other people. Should be killer.

And at least now it will be done professionally, and I can watch him every step of the way to learn better myself.

#180 3 years ago
Quoted from radial_head:

One of the main reasons I passed on trying to do a full restoration on Spiderman was largely due to the cabinet. Glad to see you've got the guts (or the connections) to complete it.

Definitely. This one is a challenge, and more complex than the 4 or 5 others I’ve totally repainted and stenciled to this point. Just feels like there’s a lot of room for error, or it to come out crappy.

For $300 or $400 most likely, totally worth it to have a seasoned pro help me tackle it so it comes out awesome and shiny.

Now this thing should look like a brand new game out of the box when I’m done. Well, with some more color and modifications.

#181 3 years ago

Took the final measurements and photos earlier to finish up the stencil design.

Should be printing a small sample round in the next day or two just to make sure everything lines up before I sand this thing down and the artwork is gone.

Backbox images all restitched. Now just have to clean up the outlines.

Crap.

Anybody local have a 28”, 32” or 36” vinyl cutter? I only have 24”, and the art is 2 1/2” short on the cab width for this printer/cutter.

Quoted from BorgDog:

You sure that's scaled right? I don't think the cab is 28" tall, but mine is buried in storage at the moment.

I know it isn’t 28” in the front of the cabinet as the graphic indicates, but it is in the rear under the pedestal. I’ll double check it later.

Going to do a test run with a smaller-scaled decal on a 1x4’ board just to see how it comes out.

And it’s obviously not scaled right....it must’ve recalibrated something unexpectedly. I have the dimensions of the cab and backbox up in Post #181.

Got a little overzealous with pulling the blue off...red wasn’t dry enough. Looks pretty decent as a first sample test run though. Need to tweak the left edge a little.

What’s the chances of getting those cabinet scans so I can make stencils and offer them to everyone?

That would be awesome. Do you need the original BMP files? It’s already digitized into vector files for printing on a vinyl cutter. Just haven’t had a chance yet to go back and resize it.

In the middle of moving. I’ll shoot you a PM.

Quoted from zahner:

I had a very nice one and then bought a beautiful one from my friend Steve Charland’s family after he sadly passed away. Given it was Steve’s game and one of my favorite pins, I’ll never sell it.

Awesome. Didn’t know Steve personally (unfortunately), but did have mutual acquaintances, and certainly knew his reputation and stellar collection. Sad day when he left the planet.

Quoted from zahner:

That aside, your restoration is looking awesome and has given me a few ideas re powder coating.
If you need any info, pictures, or anything else, let me know. Seems like you are way beyond needing anything, but the offer stands.

Appreciate that, and very cool. Going in a different direction with this one, and one to make it look very “comic book”. I’ll definitely keep you in mind if I need anything. Thanks for the offer.

I just stumbled upon this thread. I am in the process of restoring a GTB Spider-Man as well (I purchased it as a rough non-working project from a trailer park in San Leandro - guy told me it used to be routed at a country club in Castro Valley).

That looks freaking awesome!! In the middle of moving, so I haven’t had much time to work on any pins at all. I’ll shoot you a PM now though so I can get this thing moving.

Thanks for sharing. Your cabinet looks spectacular.

Do you find you stay up at night thinking about how to tackle different problems. Sorry for rambling the thread has made me a little excited.

Thanks for checking in. I always think of ways to get games done. Glad it’s exciting other people to hit their Spideys.

I’m getting back to this one next week. Montana Marble seems to be a great option, as mentioned by @whiskeypinball, and seems to be the way to go.

Can’t wait to get my cabinet done because everything else is ready to reassemble, and that is the most fun part.

You shouldn’t have sold it.

BG showed up today. Looks great. Nice dark blues and reds. Hot led spot doesn’t show with my eye.
Rubbers from Titan came yesterday, borrowed some colour changes from a Colsond3. Still looking for a PF although l haven’t posted anything on PS.

Nice! New BG is definitely much better. So many Gottlieb glasses tend to “spot flake” over time. Some colors they used just don’t hold up well, especially the blues and yellows.

Rubber kit looks great too.

I’ve been working on my Halloween retheme, but should be getting back to this with Whiskeys’ awesome help in the next week or two.

That playfield looks pretty damn good to me! Especially comparing it to what I started with on this one.

#217 3 years ago
Quoted from WhiskeyPinball:

Used colored LED bulbs to match inserts, warm white bullet bulbs for under playfield plastics, and warm white bulbs for backbox (except purple was used for player # and blue was used in three circles on left side of backbox.

You have a shot of your illuminated backbox?

Quoted from WhiskeyPinball:

Another thing to add is that I replaced the Gottlieb posts with normal posts (Machine Post/Stud 530-5010-02).
The change allows one to get rid of the speed nuts (which I don't care for) and color coordinate with plastic acorn nuts (check my playfield pics to see the different colors used in order to blend with the plastics).

Damn man, your game is looking sweet. Nice original look. I used sunlight bulbs in mine. Wanted to be in between cool and warm.

I did the same thing on my playfield with the posts, the pics are a few pages back. I think I included the color-matched post rubbers in the Titan kit I created.

That game sure is pretty. I’m waiting for my buddy to cut out the stencils.

Jesus Christ - that's that piece of shit I sold you at Allentown ? lol
You are a master !
So happy you saved it... makes it worth almost getting killed dragging it out of a filthy basement with broken / missing steps.
I will gladly buy it back now.
Good job bro !
Joe

Nope, that’s @whiskeypinball’s game. He made progress much faster, and now his game is setting the bar high for mine. Haha.

Wow. Yeah, that looks pretty rough. Was it a Hurricane Sandy game?

Quoted from Pandelis:

And how did you get your door to shine like that?

Probably polished? If so... start with sanding. Most people jump using the same or close grit increments, but you can try what works best for you.

I usually go (about 5-10 min each grit, depending how bad the metal is):

600
1000
1500
2000
3000

Then hit it with Mother's Mag or Flitz and a microfiber cloth. I sometimes also use the buffing wheel in between sanding and final polish.

Here’s a lockdown bar I just finished.
