During resto of a number of GTB 70s machines I have noted a football shape marking indentation on each side of cabinets. Does anyone know the reason-are they manufacturing jig marks?

Those are plywood plugs. Nothing to do with the game manufacturing.

they are repairs to defects in the plywood

Thks for advice. I had never heard of plywood plugs but now realise they were used on lower grade plywood where 'visual impact' not so important.

They were and are used in areas where knots blemished the flat grain.

By using lower grade plywood, those plugs stood out when painted a solid colour. So splatter paint was used to camouflage the defects in the plywood. They could of used a plywood grade with 1 clear side (Grade AA-B I think), and have the plugs on the inside, but cost savings were common.
