Hello all,

I went to use one of my pins and when I turned it on I got a message of "ground short row 1 is stuck closed" as well as the outhole solenoid popping for a short time. I am not sure what I might have done or where even to start to fix this. Thus any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Which pin?

Sounds like something on row one of the switch matrix has a short. Possibly a transistor, a wire on the playfield, or a bent diode on a switch. Look in the manual at what is in row 1 of the switch matrix and start looking at those switches for the short.

Hello!

Thanks for the help. It is on TAF. I will take a look at the manual in the mornig (it has been a day!) and get back to you.

Thanks again!!!!

Hello all,

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it!

I went through the game, trying to focus on what I thought was row 1, and did not see any wires touching anything they should not (such as a diode) or any other noticeable issues. As such, it may indeed be the U20 chip. Regretfully, the chip is indeed soldered. Is there a way to test the chip before I try and desolder it? Is it possible to replace the soldered chip with a socket and then put in a new U20?

Thanks all!

If you had an o'scope, then you could easily check that IC.
You can also watch this for activity with a logic probe -- have one of them?

Like the sealclubber said - it does sound like you have something loose in there. Might want to triple check them switches as the short can be quite easily overlooked.

If it comes down to replacing the IC, I would definitely put in an IC socket. U20 seems to get picked on alot and a socket may save on future headaches. Make sure to use a quality socket, though. Don't use one of them Jameco 16cent specials.

Hello!

Thanks again all for the help... I looked again and do not see anything touching something else it should not. And, since I cannot access the DMD switch status I am stuck. I do, however, have a logic probe but do not know how to use it (sheepish feeling...). I am a noob for sure!

I suppose I get to learn how to desolder a PCB chip and install a socket. I will be sure to avoid the Jameco 16cent special!

I will let you all know what happens.

Thanks again!

And... I have the same problem. Wonder if there was any learnings from this?
