Hard to say, since there is something of a split between musical styles. These days, I'm digging John 5.
Its like asking what's the best pizza. There are so many different styles its hard to compare. How about EVH? He changed the world of guitar playing with his style.
I think we need to add Eric Johnson, George Harrison, Wes Montgomery, Robert Johnson to this discussion. All very different styles. Ry Cooder & Joe Bonamassa are pretty good too...
A lot of guitarists will say...Tommy Emmanuel. I would say, Gillmor, Chet Adkins, Andres Segovia, Stevie RV, Glen Campbell
Sheer technical skill, Roy Clark's performance of Malaguena is the single most impressive thing I've ever seen done on a guiatar. The man was largely before my time, but my grandparents took me to see him in Branson Missouri in my youth. Here is an abbreviated version of his performance from his guest appearance on "The Odd Couple".

If you have no idea what I'm talking about listen to this man play this cuban song in his prime and realize this is one man on one six string guitar.
This is all kind of like a "It all depends on what your definition of the word "is" is" argument. There are so many different ways to define great guitar playing. If you like guys who play to the song, you would like George Harrison. And who wouldn't want to play to the song if you're a Beatle? You've got the best-written songs to play to. Fast, showy guys are often playing crap songs, in my opinion.
Keith Richards is not the best technical player, but he's one of the greatest writers in rock and roll history. He uses his guitar to project the songs he writes. You guys know all the riffs that he created with open G tuning. I think that makes for a great guitar player.
That being said, no Ritchie Blackmore yet?
Nice one OP! Prince was an amazing guitarist, and Dave Chapelle will tell you he was a great basketball player too. Jerry Reed is also one of the greats!

There is no "one" greatest guitarist. "THE" most influential ? that's another conundrum.
I like Hayfarmers take and it could easily be argued that without JIMI, many of the guitar idols listed here possibly wouldn't have the chops that they do/did.
Because music is in the "ear of the beholder" so to speak, we are all free to pick our pleasure and poison.

I once saw Jaco Pastorius take over the stage for a solo and you would have thought GOD had come down to lead an orchestra of sounds.
It was epic.
For Rock bassists I'm a big Pino Paladino fan and John Entwhistle, stands tall. Jack Bruce, Paul Samwell-Smith and John Paul Jones.

This. Jaco was the shit. Agree with you on Flea, just watch him hand Mike Watt the award for Best bassist of all time in 2008, pretty much sums it up.
