It took years for it all to get completed, so it cannot to be considered as a moment in time; But the Interstate Highway system, in retrospect, is of great historical significance to our way of life.

This was President Eisenhower's baby. And the only way he managed to sell it to Congress was to present as an effective and efficient means of moving military equipment across the country quickly. Commercial considerations were a minor part of sale to Congress.

The interstate systems makes it possible to chase a pin that is 1000 miles, or more, from home.

Quoted from guss:

My fathers Medals[quoted image]

A little bit about your dad's WW II era Purple Heart:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Heart

"During World War II, 1,506,000 Purple Heart medals were manufactured, many in anticipation of the estimated casualties resulting from the planned Allied invasion of Japan. By the end of the war, even accounting for medals lost, stolen or wasted, nearly 500,000 remained. To the present date, total combined American military casualties of the seventy years following the end of World War II—including the Korean and Vietnam Wars—have not exceeded that number. In 2000, there remained 120,000 Purple Heart medals in stock. The existing surplus allowed combat units in Iraq and Afghanistan to keep Purple Hearts on-hand for immediate award to soldiers wounded in the field.[11]"

All of those Purple Hearts were left over from WW II because of these:

There was America before The Beatles. And there was a different America after The Beatles.

You would have been living it to understand.

Quoted from AlexF:

Obviously McDonald's will be fine. How about the mom and pop restaurant owners that have been barely hanging on through the pandemic? F### 'em I guess? [quoted image]

Mom and pop need for everyone to get the vaccine. So we can go out to eat and not worry about death tapping us on the shoulder. The new guy is going to push hard to get the schools opened back up so parents can go back to work and start bumping the lunch trade.

Looks like we are going to see some federal coordination to start getting vaccine centers set up an running around the country. The states are going to be reimbursed for charges incurred for calling up the Nat'l Guard to apply its expertise in getting vaccine centers set up around the country. The goal is to have 100 million people vaccinated in 100 days.
